I renamed my old ULTRASND to ULTRASND.OLD, and had it install into the [now empty] ULTRASND. Afterwards I fiddled with the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT a little bit, just moving some lines around (ie., since my ULTRASND dir is on a stacked drive, I had to load STACKER befor ULTRINIT.SYS). It boots OK (no obvious crap outs), but now DOOM does not play music. I have a batch file which changes the IRQ from 11 to 7, then runs DOOM. This has always worked in the past, but now only gives me the effects. Secondly, I can't play MIDI files under DOS (haven't tried under Windows yet). PLAYMIDI gets a DOS error. Thirdly (though this is less serious than the other two), what's with the MOD player? I liked the old GUSMOD, it showed more info, and also lets you select a new file without quitting. Is the old one still included, or do I have to [re]get it from epas? I don't fiddle with my Ultrasound stuff much, usually just load things up the way they're meant to. I'm probably missing something simple. And yes, I did read the README file! Thanks! -- ========================================================================= Phong T. There are two major sound tracks in the program; the one that plays while you are going through the introductory material, and the one that plays while the game is actually being played. I have found that when the program starts (intro mode), while the music is playing there is a random solid tone about every 10 seconds. Short duration, perhaps 3/4 of a second. It continues every 10 seconds or so, until the game mode starts. No problems in the game mode. Further, if after being in game mode, I return to the intro/setup mode, the theme plays fine WITHOUT the random note. It occurs to me that it is possibly a patch loading problem. Comments anyone? Well I've asked everyone I could think of about getting MEGA-EM to work with Lands of Lore CD, including Gravis (no answer from jayeson@gravis.com or tech1@gravis.com), Virgin/Westwood software (they answered promptly, but didn't know. The tech admitted that the GUS was the best sounding card out there, and he didn't know why they weren't supporting it natively, hmm). The thing is, the music and voices work GREAT for the Introduction. It sounds, really, really nice. No problems at all. But as soon as you "Start a new game", the voices are all messed up. The music continues to work correctly, but the voices sound-sound like-like this-this. The voices loop and are generally very messed up and incomprehensible. Can anyone help? I tried all the switches I know of. It even does this with SBOS as well. This is very frustrating and I don't want to have to take this game back. Other products from Westwood seem to work fine with MEGA-EM (Kyrandia II works beautifully) Help! -- Carl Mueller, Programmer | FTP site and mailing list for GENESIS and Wayne State University | SNES programming. Well, except for one small..teeny tiny little thing... *NONE* of the major developers are developing applications for OS/2. *ALL* of the major developers (and several thousand smaller ones) are developing Win32 applications, which will run under Windows 4.0 and Windows NT, but, alas, too bad, not under OS/2. And, as has already been pointed out, Chicago (a/k/a Windows 4.0) will support existing Windows 3.1 device drivers, soooooo... Oh, and it also has a "Single MS-DOS Application Mode" where you can run an MS-DOS app, such as a game, that violates the "rules". It'll be interesting to see whether SBOS & Mega-Em will run in this mode (they should). +-------------------------------------+-----------------------------------+ | Jim Blakely, MCP | Co-Author of | | Blakely-Signature Associates | "Windows Configuration Secrets" | | Bonita Springs, Florida, USA | with Valda Hilley | | | Coming in May '94 from IDG Books | | A Microsoft Solution Provider | ISBN 1-56884-026-8 | +-------------------------------------+-----------------------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Mar 1994 13:32:32 GMT+100 From: "Viktor" Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V11 #49 [...] > > Date: Wed, 16 Mar 1994 08:24:41 -0800 (PST) > > From: Rath > > Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V11 #39 > > > > RE: DOOM DIGITAL SOUNDS > > > > YEAH! Just a suggestion: Set both GUS IRQs (the GF1 and MIDI IRQs) to settings less than 7 as protected mode drivers often have trouble with the high IRQs. Also, what version is loadpats? MIDI: DOS, Windows There have been a lot of posts referring to the GUS Max. What's different between it and the standard GUS? More memory? Another question: The DOS MIDI player plays back MIDI files much truer than the Windows Midisoft MIDI player. By "truer" I mean that more of the original instruments are used. Does the DOS player automatically conserve memory, an option which has to be manually set in Windoze? --------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Mar 94 08:38:04 TZ From: Daryl James Subject: Hiss in recordings > Date: Sat, 19 Mar 94 13:06:19 EST > From: Haroon Sheikh > Subject: Hiss in recordings > > Why is it that no matter what sampling frequency that I record at, I always > get a layer of hiss (noise) over the entire recording. I too have the same problem. Since I got the GUS I have tried recording using USS8 and the standard Sound Recorder Applet in Windows 3.1, but my recordings all suffer from the same hiss. I have also tried using Line-in and Microphone in, 3 different microphones (one mic from Windows Sound System, and the others were professional dynamic mics) all with mini stereo jacks- all of these produced a very distorted sound even before recording starts by just playing directly thru GUS using the Mixer applet. I have only been able to get the level high enough by using the headphones output from my CD player, but this too suffers from the background hiss when playing back the recording and seems unrelated to the input level. I had basically written the problem off as either a faulty input jack or input amp on the GUS, or some mismatch with impedances and until recently I have ignored it since I love the other features of the GUS and have not needed to do any recording... Until NOW! I want to use PatchMaker Lite and I need to be able to record decent mono samples! Can someone please tell me what the input impedances/sensitivity are for the Line-In and Mic inputs? I recall that the "Standard" for line-in is usually 1 volt into 600 ohms, but maybe it is something different in the GUS? Any other ideas for tshooting this problem would be appreciated. Holly" Subject: New motherboard solved problems... I have had considerable trouble using my SB 2.0 and my GUS at the same time. You may ask, 'Then why bother with the SB?'. Well, like others I have long since been fed up with SBOS. Megaem is good but still doesn't work every time i.e. NHL Hockey. So instead of bitching about it I picked up a used SB. I just replaced my motherboard and now the GUS and SB co-exist PERFECTLY! No fancy configs or autoexecs, no routing of one through the other, no hassles, none whatsoever. I let both setup programs do their thing and they run beautifully together. Why am I telling you all this? To brag? NO! Just to let everyone know that despite the best and most generous efforts of everyone here to help each other with solutions to their problems (including all those that tried to help me), sometimes one person's solution will not work for someone else because the equipment is different. So keep this in mind when you consider flaming someone because they passed on a solution or complained about a problem but it didn't work for you or you never had the same problem.
