Whenever I used the card (in any configuration) my system would eventually hang, often with background noise similar to the tail end of car accident... you know, when someones head is resting on the horn :-) I can smile about it now, because I replaced my motherboard and haven't been able to make GUS break. I did NOT however go with the $199 option from ATLAS INDUSTRIES because I was told that getting refunds from them is like pulling teeth (if anyone I spoke to did end up buying from Atlas, I hope you had no hassles). I bought my bare-bones motherboard from a friend in a local computer store for a little more money, but I knew I'd have no hassles if GUS still didn't work. I'm happy now, which means I made the right choice. My bad chipset (assuming the chipset was the problem) was ZyMOS '87. Stuff (Patches/Questions/Support) To: Ultrasound Daily Digest First, if ANYONE figures out how to convert patches from a MIDI synth into a GUSable format, there's an FTP site with a lot of patches floating around (ucsd.edu, /midi/patches. Oh, yeh, they also have some MIDI music, almost all classical ). These might be just synth-specific type instructions to modulate the various waveforms and not "sample"-type patches, however. (They're seperated into directories by synth name, and I can't identify some of them, so I don't know what type of synth they are). Anyway, it's good to hear that LucasArts and Sierra are turning around in their support. Good to know that the masses count after all! On a side note, is the SCSI daughter board out? If so, how much would it be? Ken, I tried sending you email #directly (ken@batman.austin.ibm.com) but it bounced! I need to be sure to put my real email address in my posts! It is ken@austin.ibm.com. Leave batman out of the path. We've changed the way we get mail, but our sending address still displays our node names. #What is Dan McKee's email address? (Ken, you should know.) Dan McKee is 70742.2052@CompuServe.COM. He's very good about responding to email! #Ken, you said the GUS works well with Winjammer? Don't you have any #problems loading in the patches? Of course, but I did with Cakewalk Pro too, so I've just kind of accepted this! ;-) #Some people have suggested loading #the MID file into Microsoft's Media Player and then load it into #Winjammer. That way the patches would be loaded in correctly. Exactly. Load Media Player first, then open Winjammer. #While that may work (I haven't confirmed this for all MID files I have), #how do I write a new song with Winjammer? Simple scenario: I want 4 #instruments say, a piano, flute, oboe, and bass. How do I load in the #patches or should I say, how do I specify the right patch for the #particular melody? I hope you are a patient man! I think the biggest problems I've had in this area are (1) no MIDI IN (which means I had to put the notes in with piano roll - YUCK) and (2) remembering to always have patch 0 in there - I think this is a GUS requirement. #How do I use the piano roll thing for input of the #melody itself? Seems counter- intuitive. Any help would be #appreciated. I just want to begin writing some MIDI songs with my #GUS! I am dying to use this thing to write .MID files. I've got one that the orchestra sounds will be perfect for. Here's what the deal is. We all know you have to load Media Player first, right? Well, Winjammer has a little snag here. You cannot assign a patch number until after you've recorded on the track. That makes things a bit complicated. Let me see if I can remember what I did to get this to work. I think I opened a new file and hit record and let it run for a measure. Then I copied the blank track to several other tracks. Then I could specify a patch number. Then I went into piano roll and inserted some notes. I only did one measure since this was laborious as hell! Then I exited Winjammer and loaded the MID in Media Player to load the patches. Then I could play back my new MIDI file (stunning - a whole note on three tracks!) with either Winjammer or Media Player. Hellish? Well, yeah, for a guy with no patience. I'll double check this procedure tonight and see if there are any other little oddities I had to do and make sure the order is correct. I will post my response to the digest. Now if we can get the MIDI IN working and get a patch loading app, things will be very cool. I'm still taking suggestions on getting the MIDI Mapper set up. I am convinced mine is incorrect and I do not look forward to editing that big monster. I noticed you can specify if it is 0 or 1 based. I guess we should use 0 based since you have to have patch 0 in all MID files, but then patch 128 doesn't show - only 0-127 - and 128 is the percussion track! What to do, what to do... Francois Dion suggested using channel 10 for percussion and setting up key mapping for each instrument, and Anthony Tang sent me an MT-32 patch map for use with playmidi that lists what values should be in the keymap for percussion, so I might try to hack this stuff when I get some free time. Perhaps Francois and Anthony will post that info here as well? Any comments, questions, help, email ken@austin.ibm.com. Good luck! Of course I jumped at this opportunity, secretly hoping for inside info on future GUS goodies. I wasn't disappointed. After sorting out my technical problem (which turned out to be nothing at all), the fun began. We all know about the patch loading problem under Windows and that Gravis is working on a utility to load patches. Well I saw a beta version demonstrated and it literally blew me away. Since I know that my PS/1 Joystick works in it no problem, and the GUS box says that you can use a simple Y cable to get both joystick ports, I would guess that the port would be more-or-less exactly the same as the joystick port that came with my 1981 PC. So, I popped open my old Tech Ref. and had a read. After reading through the MIDI connector file from the Request machine and also looking at my IBM IMF's Tech Ref, I would guess that the pinouts for the GUS would be the following: 1 - +5V Line out for joysticks coords NOTE : THIS IS JUST A GUESS 2 - Joystick 1, Button 1 In I HAVE NOT TESTED OR 3 - Joystick 1, X Coord In BUILT THE ADAPTER YET 4 - Ground for buttons (connect buttons here) NO WARRANTIES ON THIS 5 - Joystick 1, Y Coord In USE THIS INFORMATION 6 - Joystick 1, Button 2 In AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!! 10 - Joystick 2, Button 1 In 11 - Joystick 2, X Coord In 13 - Joystick 2, Y Coord In 14 - Joystick 2, Button 2 In ************************* 5 - Ground (MIDI In data) NOTE : BASED ON MIDI CONNECTOR FILE INFO. 15 - +5V for MIDI In MAYBE YOU COULD JUST USE THE 9 - +5V for MIDI Out JOYSTICK'S +5V LINE, BUT I'M TRYING 12 - Ground (MIDI Out data) TO ISOLATE THE MIDI STUFF. ************************* Pin 8 might also be a +5V line out, but I haven't check any of this.
