Huth) Subject: 2 Hell and Back w/New Drivers [For specifics in my case see the GUS-digest of 12-Jan-93, "PatchDir to Hell".] I still don't know what's up with the new drivers (PMLITE bunch). They had been working with all apps until two days ago. As a kludge, and one hell of a one, I made a couple of .bat files to replace the drivers. Simple, not terribly effective, but at least there's some MIDI music! Here's what I did, everything else unchanged: Directory of F:\SND\_GUS\WINDOWS\OLD (both .bat files here) COPYOLD BAT 145 01-14-94 3:53a xcopy grvsultr.386 e:\win31\system xcopy midimap.cfg e:\win31\system xcopy ultmport.drv e:\win31\system xcopy ultrasnd.drv e:\win31\system COPYNEW BAT 157 01-14-94 3:53a xcopy ..\grvsultr.386 e:\win31\system xcopy ..\midimap.cfg e:\win31\system xcopy ..\ultmport.drv e:\win31\system xcopy ..\ultrasnd.drv e:\win31\system All this does is replace the new driver set with the old, and vice-versa. This makes all the old apps happy and makes PMLite happy (PMLite seems to work with the old drivers, but just not very well (or stable)). I know, one hell of a kludge. The Mixer also is not compatible between drivers, so that really should be altered with the drivers. Now, how many that are having problems also kept their old drivers around? Anyway, this is not intended for anything but a next-to last resort. -- Cornel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jan 1994 09:39:42 -0500 (EST) From: "Todd C. Essentially, you are right--but your thinking is just a bit off. 256Kx4 means that they are only 4bits wide. Two chips gives you 8bits wide, 256K. Thus, six chips (surprisingly, the number of formerly "free" sockets on my GUS card) gives you the additional 768K to bring you up to a meg. ------------------------------ Date: 14 Jan 94 10:28:00 PST From: EBULALACAO@CSUPomona.Edu Subject: Band in a Box If you like such things...then try out Juker v3.0 for Windows...it supports patch caching...I also have Band in a Box...Juker is much better...and it's shareware! The problem is that we are seing more and more programs that use the DOS4GW extender, are these programs unusable if they don't support natively our Ultrasound ? Since not many company have release softwares that use directly our card, some of us are getting afraid not to be able to emulate SoundBlaster any more because of the DOS4GW. I've installed the new drivers bundled with Patch Maker Lite, and all is well in the Windows world. I'm a bit confused about the new ULTRASND.INI file, and some side effects of it (I think.) 1. I have been using Megaem for GMIDI support. I replaced patch #127, ringwhsl with pistol2 in my old ULTRASND.INI, and Megaem would use the pistol2 patch. (You guessed it, I haven't finished Xwing yet) I attempted to replace this patch in the new ULTRASND.INI file (both occurances), but Megaem didn't use it. Do I have to switch back to my old ULTRASND.INI every time I use Megaem? 2. What's the deal with the multiple patch sets in the new ULTRASND.INI file? I get the idea, but how do you actually switch to a different set of patches from inside a Windows application? Anybody have sample code to accomplish this? 3. TO GRAVIS: Will you be shipping a new set of update disks to registered Ultrasound owners sometime this year? I would like to see the new drivers, Megaem, Patch Maker Lite, etc. shipped out to your loyal customers. I installed the new windows drivers from the SDK along with PMlite. I have a custom ultrasnd.ini which I didn't want to change, which has it's roots in the 2.06a disks..anyway, I lost the patches in windoze, and all the other symptoms described in the last few digests. After re-installing the drivers to no avail, I compared the .ini files.. The new one has headers for each bank eg [melodic bank 0] as well as [Melodic patches], so I edited my old .ini to resemble the new one, started windoze and problem solved. My Solution: Install the new .ini (edit each bank's path to your patch dirs) to /ultrasnd or compare the new one with yours and edit it manually. Patchman only seems to notice the old headers so keep them in, and add seperate banks (like the new .ini) at the end. Still, no midi sound. Are you sure you got the *new* ultrasnd.ini, i.e. the one that came with the new drivers? You can tell because it has stuff like [Bank0Melodic] and [Band0Drum] in it. Sorry, but I don't have my system here, and I don't remember the *exact* words. Neither do I remember the exact sequence of events that I followed to install the new driver. Hope this helps, though. You've all been a great help. To summarise (and this is the bit (pun intended) I didn't understand: You need to buy 256Kx4 DRAM chips. The x4 means that the chips you are buying use 4 bits, or a nybble. So, 256K * 4 bits = 128K. Hence, you need 2 chips of 256Kx4 to get 256K bytes.
