I know little about DPMI (DOS Protected Mode Interface), but I DO understand the MegaEM uses PM in its own way, so the two don't mix. Now my question is, can an "alternate" MegaEM be written which actually uses DPMI to accomplish intercepting MPU401 port accesses rather than just taking control of PM itself? Or does DPMI not have that capability? The game appears to only work correctly if your soundcard is at base address 220h. Start the game by running main /iirqn where n is your SB/MIDI IRQ, after you've placed your GUS on 220h. I've spent hours trying to get the Digitized effects to come out of the Incredible machine, no luck, I can get GMidi fine with megaem. Something use the /sh switch(not a valid switch) and setup megaem before using setup(meaning reinstall the program??) Yes, it's time we heard more complaints about the combination of new mixer and drivers failing to restore things properly. Have you clicked the 'SAVE' button in the mixer. This writes the settings to an .ini file with 'mix' somewhere in its name in the \ultrasnd directory. I thought that the drivers then restored most things when next initialized, except the enable status of mic and line-in. It's hardly Windows fault if someone has blundered when writing the programs for it! >p.s.- why does ultrasnd.ini have to be in both /ultrasnd and > /ultrasnd/windows ? I don't think that is does have to be (in the latter directory). I have always seen the windows subdirectory as a home for the original (rather than the working) copies of files. This applies to the drivers also, which are probably installed in \windows\system unless you change you system.ini to point back to \ultrasnd\windows. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jan 1994 16:10:33 -0500 (EST) From: m8088044@llohio.ll.pbs.org (Fred Coffey) Subject: MOD player. OK, I'll relay this one more post from our very active Gravis rep on Genie: ------ (snip, snip) ----------------- Category 1, Topic 6 Message 217 Fri Jan 14, 1994 GRAVIS [Adv Gravis] at 13:26 EST Hi guys! Here's some CES news. First off, we were showing at CES the Gravis Personal Piano System and our new joint venture with Forte - the VFX1 Virtual Reality Head Set System with full motion tracking. It was apparantly, the product of the show. Now, onto the good stuff... Brad Craig, Pete Matthews (from Forte) and myself, met with just about every game developer down there including Sierra, Maxis, LucasFilm, Microprose, Interplay, Crystal Dynamics, SSI, New World Computing (we had to...they were right next door!), just to name a few. We had scheduled appointments with Origin, but for some reason, they were not at their booth when we got there.....although the EA/ORIGIN/SSI booth was an absolute zoo... Now, we saw a whole heck of a lot of new games that support the GUS. New World Computing, Sierra, and SSI and MAXIS, are waiting for the 32 bit AIL drivers Sierra will release patches for GK, PQ4, QFG, once our drivers are done. We were able to get the game developers to sign a non disclosure at the show regarding a major industry announcement (which I cannot tell you about). Suffice to say, they were impressed. Anyways, most of the game companies have at least one or two titles that are coming out, and more are slated for release. Now, the top three GUS games that we saw or were showing are: Hired Guns - with 3D support...looks and sounds interesting Star Reach - from Interplay - looks really cool and sounds great The Horde - from Crystal Dynamics - with 35 minutes of video footage The Horde looks like one funny, zany game. From their press kit, they say: The Horde is an unflossed rabble of eating machines. They come in multiple sizes and cravings. Original CD quality finger licking good music, digitized eating noises and other sound effects. Mouth watering texture mapped 3D characters, backgrounds and objects. From the same team who cooked up the award winning Star Control. Don't ask me to explain ityymore! Also, the VFX1 headset was the game developers dream item. We are making available to developers a development kit before or at the Game Developers Conference. Lets just say they were really impressed. Every game company has major ideas for use with it. Now for UltraSound Max information, all I can say it is shipping in March. Also, 11th Hour (sequel to 7th Guest) was showing at the show which also has GUS support. We loaned an UltraSound with MegaEm to LucasFilm who showed Sam & Max in their booth and office. Cool guys at LucasFilm Games! The people that we met were great, with the most interesing people being Ralph Thomas from SSI, the guys at New World Computing, Sierra On Line people the guys from Interplay, Crystal Dynamics, Accolade, Knowledge Adventure and Ocean (who by the way apoligized for Jurassic Park, and are using the GUS for Inferno). Any more questions?? ------- (snip, snip) ----------------- Also, Activision dropped a note yesterday that Mechwarrior II is "pushed back to late March" thus the demo to appease the sloberring hordes... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jan 94 17:03:15 CST From: Jim English Subject: NHL Hockey In the README fopr the latest ver of SBOS (GUS0036.ZIP) it says it fixkes the problem with NHL Hockey, but after my goalie gets the puck the 1st time (or maybe its the first interruption in play) the dig sound s all dont play. The microphone bundled with the software is not a dynamic one and requires the provided adapter for some non-sound system cards. I expect this is how it would work for the GUS - I already had a dynamic mic so I used that. The GUS is not listed directly in the setup program and attempts to tell it that I had a SB compatible failed. A 'non-listed' heading does exist but requires a driver that I assume would have to be designed for Sound-System - in any event, desperate attempts to feed it the windows drivers I have did not work! However, setup will allow you to copy the files without erasing current Windows drivers. So, despite imperfect setup, the programs do work. I found that I had to copy the GUS mixer over the Sound System mixer (audcntrl.exe) because the latter recognises that the correct drivers are not installed. My main interest was the Voice Recognition software, and it does work, fairly well I would say. But I have started to wonder exactly how much time I'm actually saving sitting here shouting at my computer! :-> Pretty much a gee-whiz kind of thing as far as my needs go, at this stage of the technology my mouse doesn't have to look for another job! Hope this helps - Shaun ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V10 #18 *******************************
