I've had success with SBOS for Indy Car Racer using the -o3 switch. To the person who was having ULTRAMID conflicts on RTZ right after the hard disk access: Is it possible that you have a conflict between your soundcard and your hard drive adapter, esp. if it's a SCSI? IRQ 11 normally isn't used by SCSI adapters that I'm aware of, but check for that. DMA channel 5 is used by the hard disk controller card... that's another possibility. Other then that... no clue. I've had problems, too, with SBOS not playing after I play a native Ultrasound app... but it's no big deal, I simply reload SBOS... I have no idea why it happens. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 1994 07:24:40 -0800 (PST) From: mikebat@netcom.com (Mike Batchelor) Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V10 #18 Not the GUS Server once wrote... $ $ Date: Mon, 17 Jan 94 08:58:48 EST $ From: "Burns Fisher, VMS Engineering 17-Jan-1994 0902" $ Subject: DPMI/MegaEM $ $ Just a curiosity question. I know little about DPMI (DOS Protected Mode $ Interface), but I DO understand the MegaEM uses PM in its own way, so the two $ don't mix. $ $ Now my question is, can an "alternate" MegaEM be written which actually uses $ DPMI to accomplish intercepting MPU401 port accesses rather than just taking $ control of PM itself? Or does DPMI not have that capability? No, DPMI was specifically designed so that a client application could NOT get control of the CPU to the extent needed to trap I/O ports. HOWEVER, it is entirely possible to modify an existing DPMI *server* to implement what MegaEm does. In fact, you should be able to produce a "Mega4GW" extender that just incorporated MegaEm into DOS4GW. One would need to purchase the Rational developer's kit do do this. I made this suggestion to Jayeson, and he said that he & Gravis had already considered this solution, but they feel that with the AIL 32 bit drivers due any time now, that the need for this is small and getting smaller. When AIL32 is here, there will be just a handful of games that won't work in protected mode with the GUS, and we know who makes those games... -- Mike Batchelor | mikebat@netcom.com | This space for rent mikebat@qdeck.com | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 94 14:49:13 -0500 From: chen@expert.cc.purdue.edu (Andy) Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V10 #18 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 1994 16:39:45 -0500 (EST) From: Phat H Tran Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V10 #18 > Date: Mon, 17 Jan 1994 22:14:32 -0500 (EST) > From: Doug Nashold > Subject: SBOS > > If I play a MIDI or SND file before playing a game that needs SBOS, I > get absolutely no sound at all. SBOS is often deactivated by programs that use the GUS directly in its native mode. > Date: Mon, 17 Jan 94 15:24:41 WET DST > From: Steve > Subject: sbos V3.7B2 - where is it? > > I've just got back from my Christmas break and checked the back copies > of the digest in my mail box. > > I've since been trying to get the new version of sbos but I cannot find > it anywhere. I have loads of Amiga modules that are 700k+ in length > and the trackers I have found so far are limited to the TRAGIC "is there > space below 640k" memory syndrome! The GUS doesn't need to use XMS/EMS. Trackers that support the GUS natively will upload all the sample to the card's memory. I can play a 700k MOD, for example, using MDP or Iplay, and shell to DOS with almost 500k free conventional memory and no XMS/EMS usage. Some GUS MOD players are, unfortunately, braindead and do not use memory very wisely and cannot play MODs that exceed available conventional memory. > Date: Mon, 17 Jan 94 20:16:09 CST > From: Jim English > Subject: Wave Volume > > ACK!!!! I set the wave volume down in my mixer, but in every app it resets > up to max, which makes for very loud system beeps, how can i fix this? This shouldn't be happening if you're using the new mixer with the new drivers. At least, it hasn't happened for me. Note, though, that some software are _supposed_ to re-adjust the WAV volume. For example, Goldwave has its own WAV volume control that overrides the one on the mixer. Since I wanted a GUS myself, I just bough a couple of Cards at a quite good rate, and would like to sell them to interested people WITHOUT making profit. Here is the price I can make: Gravis Ultra Sound DM 330,- Gravis Ultra Sound w/ 1 MB DM 395,- KOSS Active Speakers in Creme color CALL I hope to help every German looking desperately for a GUS with this! Prices include German Mehrwertsteuer (15%) and are plus shipping. All orders require payment in advance, COD (Nachnahme) or Credit Card. If Sbos can do it, which I would have >thought has more complex things to do than megaem (?), surely megaem >could do it too. This is not really practical. For one, there is no Roland trapping hardware on the GUS. SBOS uses the hardware trapping on the GUS to emulate the Sound Blaster. Secondly, Mega-Em's routines will not work very well in a normal TSR. Thirdly just to load it into normal memory would require almost a full rewrite. I get sounds when I fire my lasers and when other ships fly close by. But, I don't get any explosions or other sounds. Actually, the other effects I get sound like piano music. I do get speech, though. I am using megaem. Xwing is configured to use GMIDI and Soundblaster. Plus, I have changed my ultrasnd.ini file so 127=pistol2. What else can I do to get all the sound effects? Is it possible? I just ordered a copy yesterday. The program supports the GUS through windows, and will use most MIDI keyboards. You can call them and ask to make sure. It also supports Velocity sensitive keyboards , including the miracle piano. Hope this helps you out! (By the way, I don't use the new switch mentioned in the readme). As for the raspy sound. Well, I get the same thing, and as far as I know there is no fix for it. If you hear of anything, please let me know. If you want clear digital effects, you could use MegaEm, but then you'd get no music... However, although CDGRAB supports many drives, the shareware version does NOT read DA tracks. You can test it and it says it "should" work so please send in the ~$100 (50 Pounds Sterling) to get the "PRO" version. They also have a program called CDDA that only works with a 3401 (Toshiba) using an ASPI driver which I couldn't test. This doesn't seem like a difficult thing to do if the drive supports it and it sounds like MSCDEX is of some help so maybe some of you DOS wizards can do something we can get for a reasonable price. I'm planning to buy a GUS with 1 MEG on it mainly because I want to play MIDI files on Windows while I type up some documents, etc. Now, I want to play games on it with the GUS I plan to buy, unfortunately, it uses DOS4GW. One game is Mortal Kombat. I feel that some inevitable force is moving me away from the GUS family into another card that can do wavetable, etc. Can't GUS make a new card that has the hardware feature for just GMIDI or the Roland MT-32? That's all [we] ask for. Many of the more popular games offer General MIDI but use the DOS extendor. Since the GUS MAX has not yet hit the stores, can you guys put a chip or an upgradeable chip that supports GMIDI? -George ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V10 #19 *******************************
