Dolby Surround sound is basically a multi-phonic sound source (i.e. recorded in 4 or 5 tracks--stereophonic is in 2 tracks) that automatically pans from speaker to speaker (well, not really--just volume levels, but...) to ACTUALLY PROVIDE MOTION in the sound. It requires more than 2 speakers. Focal Point 3-D (Advanced Gravis's method) is for only 2, repeat, 2 sources--which for the highest quality are the left and right drivers in a set of good headphones. 3-D Sound uses special pre-processors and moonlit swampwater to FOOL the ears into believing a sound exists in a particular location relative to the head. Such as directly behind, forward and off to the right, etc. Because of the way it modulates the sound, speakers or any open sound source gets in the way. To work at it's optimum, each ear requires total isolation from the other. It is a two part thing, one's left ear must have part A and the right ear must have part B. Yes, it *can* work (a little) with open speakers, but for the reasons I have outlined, not very well. Is it impressive? Yes and no. No, the demos "I've" seen do not fool the ears all the time or always automatically. BUT BUT BUT it WILL when one has a visual clue to base it on, such as in a 3-D game with Holographic sound support. Later. --Joe (I am told by a friend of a dentistry demo in 3-D sound that cannot be released--Focal Point's exclusive property--that makes you turn your head to see what is "clanking" behind you....and he says "Don't even ASK me about the drill!" ) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Feb 94 18:01:15 -0500 From: liaor@churchst.ccs.itd.umich.edu Subject: DPMI/VCPI/XMS/EXTENDED etc. Thank you, whoever, for giving a good, brief explanation on what all these DOS extenders are about. Just curious, someone told me that XMS and extended memory aren't the same thing. Extended memory is sometimes used synonymously (but incorrectly) with XMS RAM, but actually XMS is the specification for addressing extended memory. Extended memory is something like linear-mapped RAM, unlike expanded memory (which is accessed through "bank") ? Anyway, why is DPMI better than VCPI? Set it for no sound field, and turn off the rear speakers. GUS 3D uses clever phasing of the stereo signal to cause a "psycho-acoustic" 3D effect. No rear speakers are needed, in fact, they may interfere with this effect, as could the also-clever phasing tricks used by Dolby encoding/decoding. You should set the speakers at ear level, equidistant from your head, so that head and speakers form a more-or-less equilateral triangle. There's a brand of stereo speakers that has GUS-like 3D built into them, but I forget the manufacturer - oh yes! It's Polk. You need only a single pair of them, and a normal stereo signal to get some really startling 3D effects, with a broad "sweet spot." $ ------------------------------ $ $ Date: Thu, 10 Feb 94 8:17:02 CST $ From: Jon Fletcher $ Subject: GUS0038.ZIP: lost or corrupted some patches?!?!?? $ $ Hello fellow Gussers, $ $ Please help. You installed gus0038 on top of the original distribution software. The patches you get the errors on were changed around the 2.06 disks, but due to space limitations, the new patches were not included with the gus0038 that you can download. If you order the gus0038 upgrade disks from Gravis, you will get all the new patches, or you can download the 2.06a disk set and get them there. This is not the GUS crashing, this is the game crashing, leaving the GUS in a state that causes it to cycle through whatever happens to be in its memory. DOOM crashes all by itself for me unless I use F5 to throw away config/autoexec. Dune ][ with the UltraMID patch also does this after half an hour or so. I don't think UltraMID is to blame. Games aren't noted for their friendliness to other software loaded in memory. You can usually avoid most crashes by playing from a clean boot configuration. Load nothing that is not necessary for playing the game. This solves my DOOM, and most of the Dune ][, crashes. Whining to game companies about crashing when your screen saver is loaded will always provoke the response "So unload the screen saver." The facts of life are that your super-486 Turbo computer must become a Nintendo to play most games reliably. Multitasking, screen-saving, calendar-reminding, etc. are just not going to work well while a game has the machine. -- Mike Batchelor | UseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinux mikebat@netcom.com | xuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesU ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Feb 1994 16:04:29 -0700 (MST) From: "Shawn T. All right, how about this: After installing gus0038, not only does Windows dump me into dos the first time after every boot, but other things started going wrong. Megaem would crash my machine when I ran emuset. One time it got far enough to give me an emm386 #6 error or something, but usually it just fills up one screen row with "*"'s, puts another "*" on the next lines, then drops down two more lines in a tantalizing way--and hangs. I also noticed that GUSMOD crashes my machine a lot now. It never really used to.... So I tried renaming my \ultrasnd dir to \oldult and reinstalling from gus0038...I realized that it really isn't even close to something you'd need for a full gus installation...what exactly is it an upgrade from? I will have to get out my 2.06b floppies and reinstall if I want to be able to use the f*$&ing gus at all--and it really worked just fine before I installed the stupid thing. But NOOOOO, I figured I'd have better support for stuff with the new files...sadly mistaken. It's going to be a real pain to install all the files again. Heck, the install even crashed my machine when I first tried to reinstall after my initial problems with gus0038, and I had to take out all the ultrainit stuff in my \config.sys and \autoexec.bat files. Now you'd think that an "upgrade" wouldn't be quite so buggy, wouldn't you. So can anyone PLEASE clue me in as to why I'm having these problems? But I noticed the problems differed depending which screen saver I selected. For example, if I understood you right, you said AD made all your WAV's play at a low volume. As of right now (with Aquatic Realm) once AD kicks in, all the WAV's on my system are played at top volume unless I go reset the mixer. No matter what the mixer was set at before, after AD kicks in, the WAV volume controls end up at max volume the next time I check it after AD. I gave up for now trying to get AD to work with sound.
