G'day again, Here is something to add a bit more fuel to this 'will the GUS be supported in protected mode without 32bit AIL" discussion.... I got the Star Trek : Judgment rites game from interplay the other day and included in the game (30 Meg Game mind you...;) was this demo called STAR REACH....a new release for them. Now, this Demo uses this DOS4GW (dont hassle me...I cant remember if the G goes before the W or the D goes... :) and supports the gus natively...(ANY IRQ me thinks...) . Sounds great and its got this wicked bit in it where it says....."Unreal sound support" and then it flashes to the next screen shot of the control menu for sound card selection and well, the ULTRASOUND is highlighed on the menu (above the SB16 and the others... *BIG GRIN* I wonder why??? ) I'll upload it before the weekend is up. Two questions- 1) Has anybody got SBOS or Megaem to run reliably with Dune (the first one) on CDROM? SBOS gets FM and digital, but locks the computer- including ctrl-alt-del reboots. Megaem gives a host of odd errors, but the result is that I can't get the CDROM to work properly. (OK, Steve, I know the use of 'properly' is redundant there) 2) Why doesn't the new ultramid load patches? Maybe I'm ignorant, but moving ULTRAMID.INI all over the place didn't help either. First, this is my first time posting to the digest, so if something goes wrong, sorry. Anyway, I've been reading about Origin's position on GUS support. What I'd like to do is write to as many software companies as possible, and ask for their position on the GUS. So, if you don't mind, could you send me the names and (snail mail) addresses of any game companies you know. You can send e-mail to me at eddie.maste@ablelink.org BTW, I've had my GUS for about 2-3 weeks now and I love it! However, I tried out Sierra's LSL6 and had some problems with the sound effects. The samples would pause or loop while playing, but stopped properly. The music worked perfectly. I really don't mind too much because I finished the game in about 6-7 hours anyway and then deleted it, but I was just wondering if anyone else had problems, or knows what's wrong so I could fix it if I have problems with other games. LSL6 came with Ultramid.exe, but I used my own (later release.) Could this have been the problem? (the nmi disabled problem) > Do anyone know if there is a known problem using the GMC chipset? The NMI problem is related more to the motherboard than to any particular brand of chipset. Some motherboards just do not have the NMI implemented according to the AT bus specs. You might want to try asking your dealer to exchange your motherboard for one that does have a working NMI. > Date: Fri, 11 Feb 94 10:19:17 +0000 > From: eeyjsfa@unicorn.ccc.nottingham.ac.uk > Subject: Re: Syndicate Hell!!! Somebody must be able to help!!! > > PLEASE HELP ME!!! [...] Download gail3214.zip from the submit directory on epas and install it in Syndicate for GUS support (read the readme for further instructions). If you experience lock-ups, then set both your Ultrasound IRQs to 5 or less (technically, 7 or less, but I don't trust IRQ 7). ============= gus0038.zip problems: The new ultrinit (version 2.16) and ultrajoy put revision 2.4 (and likely any other revision less than 3.4) GUSes in an unstable state that causes a few GUS programs to crash (eg. Inertia Player and Triton's GUS Commercial). Use the old ultrinit.exe from the 2.06 disks, rename it oldinit.exe, and place it after ultrinit.exe and ultrajoy.exe in your autoexec.bat. For example: rem New Ultrinit -- use it to float the adlib ports, if desired d:\ultrasnd\ultrinit.exe -ej rem Let Ultrajoy calibrate the game port, if desired d:\ultrasnd\ultrajoy.exe 22 rem Use the old ultrinit.exe to place revision 2.x GUSes in a rem stable state for certain software. It has to go after the rem new ultrinit and ultrajoy. d:\ultrasnd\oldinit.exe If that's too confusing, just wait a couple of days for Gravis to release the necessary bug fixes. They've already fixed the new PlayMIDI, Ultramid, Midifier, and AIL 32's. Columnist Brian Livingston for INFOWORLD magazine reports that the line "MaxBPS = 768" should be put in the 386Enh section of WIN.INI. This takes care of a lot of problems with windows dying prematurely, which is caused by using up all of the breakpoints (BPS) and windows having random errors after this is exceeded. Give it a try, it might work for you. ---------------------------- Thomas Heng Nuclear Design Engineer Email at tom@densun.oppd.gov ---------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Feb 1994 22:45:17 +1100 (EST) From: Jason Hecker Subject: Recording on the GUS Ho all! Is there any way to bypass the input filters, if there are any? B) Sampling from the microphone is quite noisy, despite the pass through being very very clear and line in being noiseless (as far as I can tell) when sampling albeit flat.
