If you got it to list OK, then it sounds like you must have correctly changed ultrasnd.ini, so if it wouldn't load or play, then perhaps the patch format is incorrect - is wav2pat an old program? Try Gravis PatchMaker Lite instead - I think it is part of gus0038.zip (which I haven't got myself yet), or pmak110.zip. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 94 09:49:08 PST From: "Brian Hayes, Client Registry" Subject: Comanche / Mortal Kombat To: GUS-GE2 --INTERNET gus-general@dsd.es *** Reply to note of 02/14/94 23:20 OK, now here's my question. Just upgraded to a GUS last week, so I haven't been able to see if these two topics have been covered. Sorry if they have been beaten to death! Perhaps some kind soul could email me privately to save the rest of you pulling your hair out :-) Problem 1 Comanche Enhanced. Because you can't use EMS, megaem is out. SBOS (I've tried 3.7 and 1.2) Work fine for a couple of minutes, then die. I get kicked back to dos (very cleanly though) with an invalid op code or something. Anyone get this to work with the GUS yet? Problem 2 Mortal Kombat. Perhaps there isn't a fix, 'cause nobody seems to be too keen to post one. I get music OK, but the digital sounds are horrible. You can't even understand whats going on from the distortion. Any fix for this? Thanks for any info you can give me! P.S. Hi 4006! Brian Hayes Ministry of Health, Client Registry Internet: BAHAYES@BCSC02.GOV.BC.CA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 94 09:41:29 PST From: "Brian Hayes, Client Registry" Subject: Flawless AVI in Windows..... To: GUS-GE2 --INTERNET gus-general@dsd.es *** Reply to note of 02/14/94 23:20 There seems to be no problem with running AVI's in windows at all - if you have 3 things 1) A decently fast machine.. 2) Some kind of disk cache installed (use a 512K Smartdrive at the least). 3) Use a half decent AVI player. This is the hard one, but heres the solution. Microsoft released an upgrade to the media player in Windows that does AVIs. It's basically the runtime version of Microsoft Video. A while back I uploaded it to ftp.uwp.edu It's in music/pictures/Springsteen.Bruce (or something like that). The file is called MSVIDRT.ZIP. Yep. Being a huge springsteen fan, I needed it to play the Springsteen 'Born to Run' AVI, also in the same directory, called something like BSAVI-1.ZIP. Good luck. By the way, I believe the main factor is the disk cache. If I take it out, it pauses to load the file - even without any GUS installed. If your GUS works in windows, it will work with the media player. P.S. Sorry if the directories are a little off, I'm doing this from memory here :-) By the way, where are all of these other AVIs everyone is trying? FTP anywhere? Brian Hayes Ministry of Health, Client Registry Internet: BAHAYES@BCSC02.GOV.BC.CA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 1994 17:45:00 +0000 From: "mark (m.) ng" Subject: Format of patches ( envelope style ) I've recently ftp'd the patch maker-lite util for windows and experimented with it. But I've felt very limited to the envelope style of the patch. Is this the fixed style that can not be changed be cuase it's hard coded into firmware?? What I want to do is: Currently patch consists of: i) Attack, sustain, and decay. - first section of wave is played at certain volume, sustain is the looping of a certain section, and decay is the looping but reducing in volume. I'd like to know if the patches have extensions like the following format: ii) Attack, sustain, and decay -where attack and sustain is the same as i) but decay is a another loop or section of the wave, probably the tail of the wave. So we have a three part patch, instead of a two part patch... parts meaning the patch is base around three different sections of the wave file. Any comments??? Please post or email me... I have 2 questions: 1. When choosing an IRQ line, should I try to pick a line that isn't being used by something else? I mean, I see people talking about picking IRQ line 5, 7 and what not, but as far as I know, my HD uses IRQ 7 and I have some other TSR (printer spooler? dunno) that uses IRQ 5. Right now, my GUS is set for IRQ 7 (for Doom of course) but I was just thinking, wouldn't there be a conflict? Or is it possible to have multiple uses for the same IRQ, without conflict? 2. This one is a little more "fuddle duddle": My dad is becoming suspicious that the GUS is frying our computer. He attributes this to the fact that since I put the GUS in the computer 4 months ago, the power on the computer fizzled suddenly (which I later found out to be a loose power switch) and now the parallel port and the serial port "blew" as in, no longer work. So I had the parallel port and the serial port fixed and everything works perfectly with my computer except windows (which is a software problem!) ANYWAYS I need some "hardware" info, as in power usage of the GUS, where how much current it draws, how it affects the devices around it, magnetic fields and such, to convince my dad that the GUS couldn't possible have anything to do with the parallel port and the serial port breaking, and that they just wore out from old age! -- Wyatt Cheng Insaneman of CandleLight wyattc@sfu.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 1994 22:28:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Kids run for the nutritious taste of Sampo Subject: King's Quest VI on CDROM HELP! Yeah, that would be es. cs.utah. | great to roll around on." com edu / ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 94 06:41:32 MST From: cameronc@nucleus.cuc.ab.ca (Cameron Childs) Subject: Mpeg For Windows Well, I downloaded MFWDEMO*.zip and it plays back MPEG fine with my GUS/1024k and 486 with 8Meg of ram. I found that with AVI it is faster to play back the sound in another application insted of the Media Player playing both the sound and the Video. But then you'd have to rip the sound from the .AVI and I dont know of a program out there that does that. Has anybody seen or heard of A AVI sound ripper ? >Cam< ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 1994 10:20:41 +0100 (MET) From: Lars-Ake Larzon Subject: Mysterious problems I have some strange problems with my GUS. At first, it worked fine, but now it has begun to behave in a very strange way. First, I'd like to say that the parameters both in config.sys and autoexec.bat is 220,1,1,11,7. Also, I have a CD-ROM device that uses DMI channel 5. The utilities from Gravis like Playmidi and so on works just fine. But when I start my gustest program, the tennis-sound is replaced with a very annoing noise. Sound like I tuned in a no-channel on my radio, if you get the picture. When I play Rebel Assault, the syntetic sound is just fine, but when the samples come, I'm back to the noise. When I play FS5, the computer becomes *S L O W* when I use the SBOS to get some sound. If I turn this off, everything works ok. --- I've used msd and found that my SBOS driver uses IRQ 11. A friend of mine, who also has a gus told me that his card uses IRQ 7, with the same parameters in config.sys and autoexec.bat as for me. Could maybe someone help me? Why all this noise? And why does the computer becomes SLOW when I run FS5 ? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 1994 13:50:35 From: T.Bolhuis@el.utwente.nl (Thijs Bolhuis) Subject: No Digests?? ---------- X-Sun-Data-Type: text X-Sun-Data-Description: text X-Sun-Data-Name: text X-Sun-Content-Lines: 9 X-Sun-Content-Length: 222 Hi, I hope that anyone can send me a mail to inform me about the silence around the GUS-daily digest for the last six days. I have decided I want true downward compatiblity. I was just wondering how I go about making them cooperate together. I figure if I do this it will make my life alot easier instead of pulling my hair out trying to get emulation from SBOS or Megaem. I'd be very appreciative for any help. This is the ONLY way that I run MegaEM. I don't really trust software >Sound Blaster emulation so I use MegaEM with my SBPro. BTW, my GUS is on DMA >7. So what are you trying to say? Naw, I forgot to add a "for me" at the end of those lines, sorry. "I" want MegaEm's DAC instead of my SB16-ASP (which is MPU-401 for added MegaEm flakiness). Which brings me to a question: Have you updated to 3.xx on your GUS? If so, have you had any trouble with extremely slow patch loading? (Playmidi and such load patches very slow when the SB16's in, but fast when it's out...) I had the combination working fine before I got the latest Mega-Em. (Well, I don't know how many Mega-Ems ago it was working, as I haven't had a new game since X-Wing last spring and got tired of playing the old games again and again until I got the Tie Fighter demo last night...) Anyway, when I try to use Mega-Em to emulate a Sound Blaster (to get better quality) then it totally craps out in both X-Wing and the new Tie Fighter demo. There's no physical conflicts between the two cards except the DMA channel on the SB which is not set-able... I can play both of these with digital effects with the -SBOFF option and EMUSET -L to use the real SB in the system, but I'd really rather use the emulation since it sounds better. If anyone else has an SB and a GUS in the same machine, please e-mail me and we can compare notes. I still haven't gotten 100% of the kinks worked out of the combination. I haven't spent much time diddling with it, since I haven't had a new game in so long. (Well, Quest for Glory IV, but I STILL can't play it after two different patches, not even on my SB. *sigh*) --Michael-- << dmcintyr@muselab.ac.runet.edu >> <> ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 1994 11:19:22 -0500 (EST) From: gt7039a@acme.gatech.edu (An anonymous word of wisdom.) A question for everybody... does anyone know of either a good 4 track MOD composer for the GUS or a good .669 composer for the GUS? I'm used to either the Modedit 2.0 editing style or the .MTM/.FAR editor style, would prefer something similar in keys to that... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 94 12:55:12 EST From: treason@gnu.ai.mit.edu (Act of Treason) Subject: Syndicate Bad Patch Has anyone found out which patch is the patch that associates with the 'moving cars' in the victory sequence? The patch thats installed for that is absolutely horrible, and any of 100 patches would be much better. This is the ONLY problem I have with syndicate, and it would be so nice to get it out of the way. I wanted to use Megaem for Roland Sound and music along with digital speech output from the SB. The music and the speech is fine, however, the sound effects for fighting are horrible. It all sounds like different instruments. Does anybody know the patch numbers for the combat sound FX so that I can change them to different patches? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | "That is not dead which can eternal | J.J.
