Due to the limited budget, the only model I am able to afford is Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Mitsumi (the low-end double-spin models). I want to know are all the CD inputs on all soundcards (including GUS) are the same or different? Cause I saw there are different audio cables for different brands of CD-ROMs and I want to make sure if it is compatible with my GUS. Thanks in advance! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 1994 13:17:16 -0400 (AST) From: Jurassic Mark Subject: DMKIT? GUS Day people, A few issues back, someone mentioned about DMKIT.ZIP (The Myles drivers developper kit). It's not on epas anymore neither on the mirrors. I went to the local software shop today and saw Hired Guns on the shelf. And, lo and behold, right on the box there was a sticker which read "Gravis 3D Holographic Sound"! Kudos to Psygnosis for taking the Gravis plunge.. I might get this game just to check out the sound... Has anyone out there heard the sound from this game first hand? If so, how convincing is the 3D effect? The numerous 3D demos I've tried so far have only been moderately well done. Although I suppose with a graphic screen to look at the effect might be more impressive. Reading the review of Doom The GUS gets very bad press in the UK - most of the reviews have basically said "nice card, but it's not a SoundBlaster is it". The latest PC Review has a good example of an unfair review - they mentioned the problems with SB compatibility, and then said there were still problems even when using the GUS in native mode; they were referring to the original problem with DOOM 1.0, where the GUS sound didn't work properly. They said OK, this isn't the Ultrasound's fault, but it does highlight the card's incompatibility. > eg. "Do I get a GUS of a sound wave32?" they say "the GUS is a top > card... GET A SW32 or SB16" I suspect they all have a GUS in their > computers at home but are not going to upset creastive labs and orchid. Maybe you're right. As far as I can tell, the GUS is selling well in the UK (I was at a couple of shows last year and exhibitors were running out of them), but a lot of people don't seem to want it to happen. Maybe we should all write to these magazine publishers until they acknowledge we really exist - they seem to think not many people have them. Does the GUS get this kind of review and lack of attention in US magazines anyone? It's just an artifact of a pre-emtive multitasking OS. As for the drivers, the latest version can be found at ftp-os2.cdrom.com in pub/os2/incoming as ultra01c.zip. A stereo version will be released at the end of this month. Robert. -- # Robert J.
