Iwas wondering if anyone knew what speeds clk/8, clk/6, clk/5, clk/4, and clk/2 represent. Also is there a place on the net that explains the AMI BIOS settings in more detail? Thanx, Will ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Mar 94 2:16:01 EST From: dmcintyr@muselab.ac.runet.edu Subject: FS5 + patch Well, per Thomas Trusk's post yesterday I got the patch for FS5... On the one hand, it works just fine. On the other hand, they "fixed" the sound at the expense of not being able to pitch shift the sample in the middle of playback. The resulting effect is a very marked and annoying change in the engine sound as you increase the throttle: PLAY ENTIRE ENGINE SAMPLE AT SPEED ONE --> PLAY ENTIRE ENGINE SAMPLE AT SPEED TWO --> etc. etc. Also, the samples they use for the engines have to be the worst job of looping I've ever seen. The propeller sound has some sort of background noise or something in it so that after awhile all you hear is na-wa-naaah-naaah na-wa-naaah-naaah... The jet sound is even worse. It's like Screeeeeee-diwarguhmph-Screeeeee-diwargumph-Screeeeee-diwargumph-Screeee.... These sounds SEEM to sound even WORSE than they used to, but perhaps it's only been a long time since I played with it. Frankly, I'm still underwhelmed by Flight Simulator 5. And now for something completely different: Did anyone ever get Quest for Glory IV working with the GUS successfully? After I got the latest patch awhile back, even using my genuine Sound Blaster as a last resort, the stupid thing STILL craps out with a DOS/4GW idiot report whenever it tries to play a sample. --Michael-- << dmcintyr@muselab.ac.runet.edu >> <> ------------------------------ Date: 8 Mar 94 09:41:02 GMT From: "A.J.Sithers" Subject: GUS and AVI slowdown Hello All! Perhaps this has been discussed before, but I can't find it in the FAQ so, can somebody please help me. I've just installed a panasonic 2x CD rom in my 386DX-25, using its own interface card. Under Windows, Cromptons (sp.?) video clips seem to drop frames when pumping sound to the gus. Remove the card and the video works just fine. Put the whole shebang into a 486-66 and I get *exactly* the same problem. Play a sound clip and everything is (again) just fine. If I run the AVI under media player, the frames are still missing. Here's the killer. I put a SB-pro in the machine and EVERYTHING works fine. My guess is that the GUS is slowing the audio processing down. I've tried swapping the DMA and IRQ settings but NO change. Since I bought the GUS specifically with CD rom in mind, I'm a might cheesed off with this. Perhaps I should have got an SB-16 ? Can anybody help ? (if you eMail then I'll post all messages up to this group and the daily-digest). Before everybody gets too excited, I'm afraid I have to report that my experience with the upgrade has been very different. Apparently the same settings as Thomas describes, but for me the digital sound option produces a half-second silence every four seconds on steady sounds, and when the sound changes (throttle opening, etc.) the same silly cycle of snatches of wrong sounds (tire squeal, jet noise, water splash) as before. Synthesised sound continues to work OK, if you can stand it. Could this be a DOS version problem, as suggested in earlier postings? I'm using DOS 6.2 with 16M total RAM on a 33Mhz 486DX. > While flying over Chicago in the dark I turned the plane over to the > Instructor for a landing at Meigs. Using the Paris Scenery addon, I asked him to land me from 5,000 ft over the city centre. He flew me accurately enough to Le Bourget, executed the landing pattern well enough, until the final approach, when he suddenly turned the plane on its side and landed on the port wing! You get some nice graphics of the Not necessarily. Almost every MTM I've written won't play with Inertia Player. It has a few flaw, the most serious being that it cannot use an MTM or MOD with single samples larger than 64k. The MTM format allows for samples of any size, as long as it can fit them all into available memory (1mb) and I frequently use sampling rates of 32 and 44khz. If there's *1* sample above 64k in the MTM, it will refuse to play it. *Some* MTMs do play extremely well with Inertia Player, but I've found neither of the players which currently support the format (IPLAY and DMP) to be satisfactory. Unless the composer tells you otherwise, it's best for now to stick with the editor itself, MMEDIT. The latest KLF MTM releases are now on EPAS in the pub/pc/ultrasound/submit directory under the names KLFZYMBA.ZIP and RC3-KLF.ZIP. The former will play excellent under Inertia Player; the later requires MMEDIT for proper playback. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Mar 1994 08:10:54 -0800 (PST) From: Rath Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V11 #32 RE: FS5.0 Thanks to Thomas, who posted his results RE: FS 5. Actually, I have a GUS and a SBPro, and the game runs slower with the GUS, and also the sound is worse than with the SBPro. So, if you want an opinion: the game is really great, but the GUS support sucks. By the way, if any of you are having problems with Rebel Assault like "Unexpected interrupt" messages from DOS4GW (yuck!) or joystick jumpiness, don't miss the fix for the game, it works! (at least, worked for me). It's on ftp.uml.edu at msdos/Games/Patches, the file being rebel14.zip. I finally got my 2.4 card to init properly with version ultrinit v 2.18. How ? ? buy remming out ultrajoy. Quite what ultrajoy has to do with ultinit is beyond me. If I find I need ultrajoy for anything I will reinstall from my origional disk set. My advice to anybody with a 2.4 card: DO NOT let the GUS0041 upgrade intall over the top of your old files. tell it to install to a seperate directory. Then copy over all the new files into your existing ultrasound directories but leaving out. Ultrinit, ultrajoy, and the setup programs. The new versions do nothing new and only lead to problems. Once you have all the files in place wipe the new directory and edit you autoexec and config.sys putting your old ultrasound path back in. PS anybody seen Jangle by TDS inc. supposedly a very good Ultrasound demo. I can't find it! # | \ / ~~|~~ /~~~\ ! ! {} ............................ | # * < \ /\ / /~\ | | |---| /\ {} Pessimism?
