I accidentally erased my config.sys and autoexec.bat a while back, and couldn't remember the proper GUS settings. I didn't worry about it for a while because I had to steal one of the jumpers for my new HD anyway, so I figured as soon as I got another jumper, I'd plug it back in and everything would be fiiiine. Wrong. I've got my autoexec.bat and config.sys set up just like the manuals say to do (except I left the "call C:\ULTRASND\sbos.bat" line out). I've got the card set on the default settings and everything. It initializes fine (i.e. doesn't say "no card found"). In fact, it initializes twice. How? I only have the damn commands once. Anyway, gus0041's install won't help, because the damn program: 1) Says I don't have a GUS installed (even though ultrinit recognized it 2) Crashes right after the GUS/SB/Gameport options. Just a friggin blinking cursor, and I have to reboot. Well, I figured...I have my autoexec and config right, so everything should work correctly anyway...right? Nope. Try to run sbos - it says "invalid SBOS port address selection" (it's set on 220, just like it should be) Try to run ultramid - it says "can't read ULTRASND environment variable" (it's _EXACTLY_ the same as the one in the manual. Checked numerous time) Try to run megaem - it says "the parameters in the ULTRASND environment variable are invalid" (they're not, dammit! It's the same as before any of this happened, but now it won't work) So, 1) can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong 2) why is ultrinit loading twice? Is this the problem? 3) could someone _please_ upload me a copy of their autoexec and config (I'm using DOS 6.2 w/multiple configs, GUS at the default settings, etc.) 4) someone grab this hammer out of my hand before I don't have a GUS to worry about anymore Thank you all for your time and consideration. Please someone help, last time I asked for help (it was a lot easier than this), I got a whopping two replies (thanks again, guys!). I'm seriously hacked off right now, and really want to get this settled. Perhaps it's time to exchange configurations to see if these problems can be fine tuned away. I have a DTK 486-33 with 20 MB RAM running DOS 5. I boot from a disk configured as to the suggestions in the FS5 manual's back page, but for extra measure I configured extra XMS (although I understand the program doesn't use it anyway). The GUS is at 220 with DMA 1 and IRQ 7, and I run the latest version of SBOS with no switches. I am NOT using the FS5PATCH that predates FS5a. The program starts up in silence until I am on the runway at Meigs, then the engine noise just begins. It has never paused once, and I experience no 'looping'. My complete setup (autoexec.bat and config.sys) is at home, so I'll bring it to work and have it available if anyone is interested. I've read on USENET that 4DOS and QEMM cause some problems, and that some homebrewed scenery files (Kenya) and the CDROM set USA(east and west) won't work with FS5a. I have NOT tested Megaem with FS5 as I'm satisfied with SBOS (am I alone here?). Is there any reason to expect the sound to improve with Megaem? Also, there is a version of ultrajoy that messes up 2.4 GUSes, so try removing ultrajoy from your autoexec.bat if it's in there. > Date: Sun, 6 Mar 1994 15:49:15 -0500 > From: KWAN RICHARD SIK YIU > Subject: REBEL ASSULT > > I saw the REBEL ASSULT has Ultrasound support, anyone knows how good > it was? Native mode or SBOS or Mega-em?? If you're looking for proper GUS support, look elsewhere. Rebel Assault uses 8-bit mono recordings for all of its music, so it doesn't take advantage of the GUS' synthesis capabilities, and plays them on the GUS by poking the samples to the card instead of using DMA. The game in fact runs _better_ under SBOS since its SB driver uses DMA to play the samples! > Date: Mon, 07 Mar 94 12:50:42 +0100 > From: Roberto Bonet > Subject: Signed to unsigned? It sounds like an _SBOS_ problem. If you have your GUS on IRQ 7 (GF1 or MIDI/SB IRQ), then change it to something else. If that still doesn't work, then you should try getting your hands on SBOS 1.20, which can be DLed from the GUS archives. SBOS 1.20 works well on many machines that later versions do poorly on. > Date: Tue, 8 Mar 1994 14:41:25 +0000 (GMT) > From: Toby > Subject: That init problem again > > Success at last! Subject: Monkey Isle II & GUS - READ!!!!!!! Message-ID: <2lk3ar$kp5@newsserv.cs.sunysb.edu> ReprintFrom: comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard My friend and I spent around 5-6 hours dissecting Monkey Island II, to try to figure out what the exact instruments were. I have been insisting on the net that the Whiff ratio is high, and that there is WAY too much piano being played. I decided to try to prove it. Here was the basic plan. Using the patch.exe in the SDK, we made a new silent patch. We set the sound to zero, and used it for instrument #0. We called this instrument 'silent'. We changed ultrasnd.ini so that EVERY instrument was 'silent'. Then we chose 10 distinct instruments. We set #1-#10 to the instruments. I believe we used 'Overdriven guitar, ringwhsl, choir ahh, harpsichord, steel drum, viola, ... uh, I forget. Anyway, so we played. Basically, if we heard an instrument, then the song obviously used that instrument. (if it didn't, it wouldn't have gotten played). Any instrument not loaded was using #0, which was 'silent'. Any instrument besides the 10 we had set was also 'silent'. Lah de dah. Next 10. repeat till done. Then choose 5 different percussions and repeat till done. The results? Monkey island uses a LOT of piano. There were 7 instruments, and THIRTY percussion instruments!!! If you replay using this as an ultrasnd.ini replacement, I guarantee that you will hear background rhythms that you haven't heard before. ------------- CUT HERE--------------------- #============================== # Title: ULTRASOUND Patch Library for Monkey island # Purpose: Do the Monkey like never before. #============================== [Ultrasound] PatchDir=D:\GUS\midi\ [Melodic Bank 0] PatchDir=D:\GUS\midi\ 0=acpiano 3=honky 6=hrpschrd 16=homeorg 17=percorg 19=church 20=reedorg [Drum Bank 0] PatchDir=D:\GUS\midi\ 27=highq 30=scratch2 32=sqrclick 35=kick1 36=kick2 37=stickrim 38=snare1 39=claps 40=snare2 41=tomlo2 42=hihatcl 43=tomlo1 44=hihatpd 45=tommid2 46=hihatop 47=tommid1 48=tomhi2 49=cymcrsh1 50=tomhi1 51=cymride1 60=bongohi 61=bongolo 62=congahi1 63=congahi2 64=congalo 65=timbaleh 66=timbalel 70=maracas 75=clave [Melodic Patches] .. copy the melodic bank above [Drum Patches] .. copy the drum bank above. ------------- CUT HERE--------------------- Everyone enjoy this! Native mode or SBOS or Mega-em?? > Thanks in advance! I bought the Rebel Assault CD-ROM because the box said it supported the Ultrasound. So far I am very disappointed in it. The GUS support is native, but it appears to be very picky about what systems it will work with (computer, CD-ROM type, amount of memory, joystick type, etc.) I have not been able to get it to work using the Ultrasound selection on my system (486DX33VLB, 16MB, Mitsumi FX001D doublespeed CD-ROM drive, MS-DOS 6.2 with doublespace, GUS V2.4 with 1MB RAM, Kraft joystick, Diamond Viper 2MB graphics). When I choose the Ultrasound option, the program runs VERY SLOW and the sound is extremely broken up. The graphics is also very slow and jerky. I tried both versions of DOS4GW that came with it, along with changing several other options (frame rate, CD-ROM speed, DMAs, IRQs, etc), and never could get the native support to work. I also called Lucas Arts Technical Support, and they were of no help in resolving the problem. They told me that they don't even plan on a fix for it at this time. The only workaround I have at this time is to use SBOS and select Sound Blaster for the sound device. When I do this, the program runs at normal speed (same speed as if I selected no sound), but the sound is terrible. The music is very choppy, and the dialog breaks up and repeats words a lot. I am using the latest SBOS (3.81), and have tried several switch options to SBOS, but could not find any to improve it. Anyway, my overall opinion at this time is that Rebel Assault sucks. I have also played X-Wing from Lucas Arts, and expected the CD-ROM version of RA to be much better than X-Wing. X-Wing has excellent MIDI music (the only bugs with the GUS on it deal with some of the patches sounding a little weird for some of the sound effects). I expected RA to have either a nice MIDI or Red-Book audio soundtrack, but instead it has a poorly sampled WAV soundtrack. Lucas Arts just sent me a patch disk for V1.4 (also available on the internet as rebfix14.zip) which fixed the controllability problem I had with the joystick, but the sound still sucks. At this point, I am about to return Rebel Assault to Lucas Arts for a refund. Has anyone been successful getting Rebel Assault to work with MegaEm or with the native Ultrasound support? I tried MegaEm several different ways, but I get no sound at all from it in Rebel Assault. However, MegaEm worked good for the sound support for the two of the three demo programs on the Rebel Assault CD-ROM using Roland for music and SB for sfx. Day of the Tenticle and Indiana Jones and the Secret of Atlantis demos worked great, but Sam and Max Hit the Road didn't give any sound.
