I had loaded the new Windows drivers into my computer and just like everyone else nolonger had MIDI in Windows. However, I then downloaded the most recent version of the Ultrasnd.ini. into the Ultrasnd Directory. But now I only have half of the MIDI patches in Windows, I think onle the percussion patches. How do I get all of the patches and full MIDI function? Lee F. Griswold ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Mar 1994 10:45:46 -0700 From: Tam Ignatius Ying S Subject: anyone tried this? HI all, I've never seen this posted to the news, I think its really fun. In case u haven't read csip.games.action, try modifying Doom's default.cfg file. You can see a line with snd_channels (something like that), change it to a large number, say 10, 20 and see what happens to Doom. Sounds great, eh? - Ignatius ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Mar 94 19:15:30 EST From: jdimich@ajiant.dnet.dupont.com Subject: Doom Freezing In Between Games To the avid Doom players: My problem lays not when I try and get GUS music going, but in between the game. Actually, it happens quite often in the middle of a game, Doom will just freeze up on me. I have my GUS set up as SET ULTRASND=220,6,6,7,5 and all of the music and sound effects sound great! Can anyone give me some insight on my problem? I am running on a 486/66 with no autoexec.bat or config.sys as well as a limited selection of TSR's and drivers. I have even tried lowering my CLK/6 (the highest) to a CLK/3 (the lowest). It sounds like it isn't. > So, 1) can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong > 2) why is ultrinit loading twice? Is this the problem? Ultrinit would only load twice if you call it twice in your config.sys and/or autoexec.bat. You probably have ultrinit.sys somewhere in your config.sys. > 3) could someone _please_ upload me a copy of their autoexec and > config (I'm using DOS 6.2 w/multiple configs, GUS at the default > settings, etc.) .. Or if you're using multiple configs, and haven't set things up correctly, your computer won't be set up the way you expect it to be. If you're not fluent with the way multiple configs are handled in MS-DOS 6.2, start off first with just a single config. Your problems sound like the lines you inserted to initialize the GUS aren't being executed at startup, probably because of a bad attempt at multiple configurations. > Date: Tue, 8 Mar 1994 12:31:13 -0800 (PST) > From: Shawn Talbert > Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V11 #33 > > DRACULA UNLEASHED > > Anyone get this CDROM game to work? If you're getting interrupt/DMA conflict error reports, then, chances are, you have IRQ/DMA conflicts that need to be resolved. If you're 100% certain that your GUS, CD-ROM, and other peripherals are all set on non-overlapping IRQs, DMAs, and I/O addresses, and yet are experiencing these problems, try placing the GUS on an 8-bit DMA channel (if it's currently on a 16-bit one). Also, make sure that your DRAM and recording DMAs are the same instead of occupying two channels. > Date: Wed, 9 Mar 94 0:36:08 MET > From: Broderdue > Subject: gus on 50mhz > [...] > The solution laid in the processor being overheated and for some > rreason heated to gus to such an extend it was not able to play > digital sounds in doom (music still worked). > So when we at last mounted a cooler onto the cpu, all the problems > were history. You might have changed it during your Stacker upgrade. IRQ 7 gives Mega-Em and many other sound utilities problems on many computers, so if your SB/MIDI IRQ is on 7, change it to some other IRQ. > Date: Wed, 9 Mar 94 00:23:23 +0200 > From: tjakobs@mswe.dnet.ms.philips.nl (THEO_JAKOBS TEL.62667) > Subject: UltraMid/v3.xx disks/The 7th guest > > Hi.. > > Is there an option in UltraMid to enable Line-In (because i have an external > CD-Rom player, and i can't connect it to my gravis).. As long as you have an extra slot free, why not buy the real thing and use it alongside the GUS? It doesn't cost very much. Not only do people not read the FAQ, but they don't even read the digest to which they've subscribed! :) Why Rebel Assault is such a dog was explained in three separate messages in yesterday's digest (not last month's or last week's, though the issue was explained then as well). In short, the GUS driver in RA is horribly programmed, and the music just as horrendous (8-bit WAVs -- all of it). Configure the game for SB and run it using SBOS. In the music I do I use a lot of vocal samples and stuff like that. In order to get them to sound good, they need to be 44.1k and 16bit. 1 meg fills up really quick that way. And, for a lot of my "real instrument" patches I run them multi-sampled which uses up tons more memory. I would much rather see a few SIMM sockets on there, and have the ability to upgrade to 8, 16, or 32 megs. Especially with the new DB, that 1 meg is just not gonna cut it. The 1 player mode is no different from the four player mode. 1 person controls all four characters from four different on screen windows. Because, the game constantly contains four windows on screen, the graphics are only fair. The 3D samples do add to the realism, because you can tell which of the four windows the sound is coming from. Hired Guns lets you choose between action which resembles a poor quality wolfenstien or an RPG which resembles a poor quality Shadowcaster. The major problem is that you can not control all 4 characters at once, so three of them could be getting killed while you are in control of the 4th. To repeat what I wrote in a previous digest, buy this game if you want to hear the sound and show your support for GUS gaming. Don't buy it if you are looking for an interesting or good game. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Mar 94 22:48:15 EST From: sabia@eden.Rutgers.EDU (Michael Sabia) Subject: honky.pat if someone would be so kind, i need honky.pat, but don't feel like downloading all of 2.06a to get it. could somebody please upload it. much thanks. bye. mike sabia ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Mar 1994 12:07:23 +0800 (WST) From: Adam Boyt Subject: KQ5 - Take 2 When I use the disk version of KQ5 with the sierra drivers, it pops ups a message, patch.001 noyt found and throws me back to dos. It looks as if it's gonna provide some stiff competition for the GUS, with several better features. The main drawback is the price, which is $600 Australian (?US$350?). I saw it being demonstrated at a PC show in Sydney yesterday. It was hard to fully appreciate the sound quality, since it was being blasted out in poor acoustics etc, but it certainly seemed pretty good. Like the GUS, it is based around a 32 voice polyphony chip, in its case the EMU8000 synthesiser. EMU is known for high quality sound synthesis, and it seems they've done a better job here than the botch-up which was waveblaster. The main advantages over the GUS are: - 16 bit recording built in - Multi CD-ROM interface built in - Programmable effects engine for chorus, reverb, Qsound (3D) - Programmable ASP on board - 512K ram on board expandable to _28_ Megabytes via simms - OPL3 FM synthesis - FULL backward hardware compatibility with: - Sound Blaster - Sound Blaster 16 ASP (now that _is_ backward) - General Midi / Sound Canvas / MT-32 - 1 meg of ROM on board (This is what the guy said in the presentation but I cannot confirm it since it is not stated on the leaflet I got) In the past I have disliked creative labs for their general lack of innovation, and poor quality etc. However, I would be pleased if the Sound Blaster AWE32 was to become a standard, just like the SB/SBPRO/SB16 are. That's what is such a shame about the GUS - it doesn't have the marketing of a powerful company like creative labs to back it up and give it widespread native support. For example, nowhere amongst all the multimedia companies with their huge audiovisual displays was gravis to be found. Its extremely hard to buy an ultrasound here in Australia. I'm gonna stick with my GUS for now, but when the SBAWE32 (what a dumb name) comes down in price I think it'll be worth it for the hassle free compatibility and the support which it will inevitably get. I would welcome your flames/comments etc... cya, Iain ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Mar 1994 02:46:44 -0700 (MST) From: Dave DeBry Subject: Used GUS for sale... I need to sell my GUS.
