Hi, I just tested cakewalk (midi prg. for windows) with my GUS. It's sure a great peace of software BUT, if I try to load a big midi file, Cakewalk reports 'There's not enough memory on your soundcard to hold all patches' I don't understand this, because I can play these Midi-Files with playmidi from dos!? I've a GUS with 1024 kb! Thanks in advance ..... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Mar 1994 08:09:40 -0800 (PST) From: swoo@netcom.com (Sky Woo) Subject: Decent speakers for the GUS Recently, both speakers on my boom box gave out on me. Instead of replacing the speakers, I've decided to get an entirely new boom box. I was about to get one when I see posts all over the place talking about getting computer speakers for outputting their soundcards. They list those prices as going for $150+. For just two speakers, that must be some pretty decent output. But I've always used my $60 boom box to output my GUS. I've always figured that since the boom box is good enough for the regular music I listen to, than it should be good enough for the music I hear from my GUS. I suppose I could always spend $150 to get a better boom box, but, is the sound really that much different. I would appreciate any replies that I can get... Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Mar 1994 09:05:16 -0800 (PST) From: mikebat@netcom.com (Mike Batchelor) Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V11 #39 Not the GUS Server once wrote... $ $ ------------------------------ $ $ Date: Mon, 14 Mar 94 18:39:31 $ From: bryan.rizzo@gravis.com $ Subject: Gravis/sierra $ $ [...] $ development. That's the one. The GUS support ends in telling you to load SBOS or Mega-Em, but it's something. It also doesn't crash, so I hear. The GUS drivers will work with it, then. It also says that the NTFS or whatever Chico will use has automatic support for 8.3 filenames, so the driver would find its patches with no problems. If you have EMM386 invoked with the noems switch, it means EMM386 will use all available UMB (or free high memory) as place to store programs loaded with loadhi. If you specify "ram" (or nothing at all), it will take 64K of this free memory and turn it into an EMS page frame, which is a doorway into the EMS memory. I have a multiboot setup with EMM386 starring in both modes, but my default is emm386 noems i=e000-efff (this gives me more UMB). I type megaem -noems and it loads and runs fine. Hi, I would like to by a midi-keyboard for use with my GUS! I'm completely new to the midi-keyboard stuff, so I need your recommend for the purchase! What do I have to buy? Do I just need a plain keyboard to play the patches loaded to the GUS? Or is it better to buy a real 'instrument' with CPU RAM etc.? What do I have to invest? What do I have to consider? I saw it for like 23$ and it looked pretty neat, but low and behold no GUS support (am i not surprised?) so I was just wondering if anyone knew how it sounded with sbos? Any knowledge about Tie Fighter and GUS? Sierra's Outpost and GUS? Now I have decided I would like to hook up a MIDI keyboard to it so I can make some music with it. Can anyone make recommendations for me? I would like full size keys that are velocity sensetive. I would like abou the right number of keys (as compared to a piano) but if it was a little short, thats OK. Something that is pretty solid so I don't break it would be nice too. Finally, if anyone can recommend some good software I would appreciate that too. Keep in mind I am musically oriented, so something preferably that does real music notation, not this odd notation that I see in some software. I have played with SuperJam and that seems like a lot of fun (although the wrong notation) so compatibility with that (under windows) would be nice, too. If you make suggestions, please tell me what you like about the product and a feature list would be nice. Thanks mucho, fellow gus'ers. -- Xeven++ C. My advice....forget about Windows 4.0! If you want to get rid of dos, then OS/2 is the way to go. I was introduced to OS/2 two weeks ago, and liked it so much that I deleted Windows off my hard drive (OS/2 will run all my Windows and dos apps). OS/2 currently has two sets of GUS drivers, although, since my GUS is currently in a friends computer, I can't comment on their performance. Unfortunately, the GUS windows drivers will not work in a WIN-OS/2 session because they are VDDs. WIN-OS/2 does not currently support VDDs. Depending on what you use your GUS for, OS/2 may or may not be for you. I am planning on getting my GUS back off my friend, and installing it along side my PAS16. OS/2 supports multiple audio devices with no problems, so I thought I'd give it a try. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ____ ___ ____ / \ / / \ / \ Paul Murgatroyd (s1114@kowande.Bond.edu.au) / / / / Student of Computing Science \----\ / / \----\ School of Information & Computing Science / / / / B O N D U N I V E R S I T Y \____/ / \___/ \____/ Gold Coast, Queensland, AUSTRALIA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Mar 1994 15:16:15 +0800 (PST) From: Francis Li Subject: XMI.ARJ...
