Calvin) Subject: GUS & TFX? Please help! Please help! I cannot get TFX to work with my GUS. I got the two patches and installed them, so now GUS at least appears on the config menu. I picked it, with no music, but when I typed TFX it said the following: Loading....TFX Spawn Error Never had that happen before. I tried it with many different memory configs, still no good. I tried with no SFX or music, worked fine. I tried megaem, it says things like alloc: init and kicks me out. I tried Sbos -x4 and the music worked fine (fine for SB that is) but there was absolutely no sound effects during the game. What am I doing wrong? First, nobody seems to have an answer for the .AVI slowdown caused by the GUS in Windows. Well, I guess its due to bad programming. Supposedly, it was made BETTER in the lateset Windows drivers. Sigh... PC Magazine actually stopped to say something NOT negative about the GUS. It has MPEG sound compression support. It does? Does that mean we can by a card like the ReelMagic and have MPEG sound output from the GUS? And, is there any drivers or something that makes the GUS Microsoft Sound System 2.0 compatible? I would really like to pick up the VR and Text-to-Speech software, since the GUS doesn't have any. But I don't know if it will work... And, now there's the new release of the GUS Rev 3.7 and the GUS MAX, with improvements such as complete hardware mixing with Line-IN and Microphone volume controls. While it may be trivial to others, I would like to have this option. I don't need 16-bit recording, so buying the daughtercard isn't an option. Is there some sort of exchange-upgrade from Gravis for their die-hard GUS Rev. 2.2 owners? Yup, the ones who bought it very early and supported it until the end? I really don't want to go through the hassle of trying to SELL the outdated version, then buying the new one... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Mar 94 11:20:15 PST From: ebulalacao@csupomona.edu Subject: I'm not getting my daily digests! Send Jayeson Lee-Steere at Gravis a copy of Novell 7. The only way he can support it is if he has a copy for testing. You can ask that they obtain their own copy, but unless you are the upteenth person to ask them about it, I wouldn't hold my breath. Jayeson's a nice guy, though, I am sure he will add support if he has a copy, so I am not kidding when I suggest that you buy him one and send it along. That is probably the quickest way to get support. -- Mike Batchelor | UseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinux mikebat@netcom.com | xuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesU ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What machine does Windows/NT run best on? I ran the file SOUND.BAT, which purports to set up the game for use with GUS. First, I copied over the Roland and SBDIG .DLL drivers with the GUS ones, ran LOADPATS, and then ran SOUND.BAT. I was then able to select a G-Midi device and the SB for digital FX. It detected them and I now run LOADPATS and then RLOFT.BAT before playing the game, and it works fine (the music does anyway). However, going into _Create Characters_ kills the music. Another thing; this game is _very_ buggy. I don't know if it's the GUS or not (haven't tried turning it off), but whenever I try to talk to the NPC who is outside, the game hangs with "Invalid Code" or something similar. When I talk to the NPC on that old road, the game _goes BACK OUT to the introduction_ and replays the introduction. When the intro finishes (or if I abort with ESC), it then goes back to the game, and the conversation seems to be over. Then if I walk around a little more and fight a bit, it will eventually hang, with a blank screen, and continue playing the music. So either SSI has released a slightly buggy product, or the GUS .DLL drivers are buggy.... Well, here's ANOTHER problem with the GUS. ULTRAMID 1.08 has a bug with patch caching-mainly, it doesn't. For some reason, ULTRAMID -C doesn't preload the patches like its supposed to. Whats the latest version? AAAAaand, to top it off, the GUS got another LOUSYLOUSY review in PC Magazine. My question is this: is the sound on the GUS really as bad as it was reviewed? I upgraded from an SB 1.0 to the GUS, so I can't compare. But it sounds like the quality of playback is cleaner and crisper on practically every other sound card. If it wasn't for the wave-table synth on the GUS, I probably would have dumped it by now! ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V11 #51 *******************************
