I've had great luck with a shareware program called "goldwave 2.0" it is only for Windows, but it supports the NeXT .snd format, the Amiga IFF format, .wav, .voc, and matlab (.mat) format (whatever that is). The editing tools are very good. What type of CPU do you have? How fast is it? On my 396DX-25 I get clicks when I record using Playfile or USS8. USS8 produces more clicks than Playfile. These clicks are due to missing samples or dropouts. As as extreme example, (I hope this looks OK on your end)... /\ / / \ / / \/ becomes | / / \ | | | / / \| It is typically not as bad as pictured here, but you get the idea. One way to tell if this is happening is to record to a raw format (i.e. .SND) for a fixed amout of time (say ten seconds) at 44100 kHz in stereo. If your file is substantially smaller than you'd expect (882000 bytes for 10 seconds of 44.1 kHz stereo), you are definitely missing samples. This may be caused by delays in writing to the disk. To find out if the clicks are caused by delays in writing to the disk, record to a ram drive. This will eliminate the delays. My guess is that the clicks will still be present. This is due the way that most programs do continuous recording with the GUS. The very-soon-to-be-released version of my program, GusDelay, uses a unique (as far as I know) technique for recording and is the only program I know of that produces click-free recordings using the GUS. Until GusDelay comes out, I would recommend using Playfile to record your "reels" (otherwise known as ".SND" files). Use USS8 only for mixing. Boo, Lotus is doing it. And a lot of smaller companies are seeing a niche in developing for OS/2. Now, when Novell have bought WP they will restart the WP/2 6.0 project. OS/2 has a Multimedia system (Ultimedia) that is *WAY* better than any Windows based systems ever will be. Even PC-rags is saying that. And Robert J. Manley is making some wery good GUS drivers. You have to let gus0041 install itself over your previous GUS installation, not an empty directory, since it's only an update, not a full release of the 3.11 software. To salvage your situation, just copy the files, in their respective directories under ULTRASND, to their respective directories under ULTRASND.OLD, delete ULTRASND, and then rename ULTRASND.OLD to ULTRASND. > Secondly, I can't play MIDI files under DOS (haven't tried under > Windows yet). The Max is a GUS with 16-bit recording, the CD-ROM interface, plus the enhancements of the 3.7 GUS and some extra glue circuitry between the 16-bit codec and the GF1 all on one board. Windows usually plays MIDI files better than PlayMIDI. If not, you might 1. Be using an improper setup for MIDI Mapper. Make sure that you are using the Ultrasound setup, not the Ultra1024, etc. setups. 2. Be running out of memory on the GUS. Media Player doesn't alert you to when instruments will be dropped due to memory shortage, whereas PlayMIDI not only notifies you, but first attempts to fit in more instruments by loading them at 8-bit resolution. > Date: Mon, 28 Mar 94 08:38:04 TZ > From: Daryl James > Subject: Hiss in recordings > > > Date: Sat, 19 Mar 94 13:06:19 EST > > From: Haroon Sheikh > > Subject: Hiss in recordings > > > > Why is it that no matter what sampling frequency that I record at, I always > > get a layer of hiss (noise) over the entire recording. To my surprise I received a reply from the on-line editor the same day! Alan Emrich responded by saying that I should not stop reading CGW just yet because the next issue will address the situation in their 'letters to the editor' section. He forwarded my letter to the editor and Alan is hoping that he will use it along with their reply (whatever that is....). I hope this generates more interest in the GUS and it's capabilities. Either that or it will just give them a chance to slam the GUS even more.... Thanks to Fok Leslie Li Sze for last Wednesday's post about the article in CGW. Kevin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You're welcome 8-> I was really disappointed that they seemed to be pushing CL products. I've sent the editor a letter and it was faxed to Mr. Donald Griffin and he gave me a reply on the matter. Firstly, it was an oversight on his part that he forgot to mention all these other wave cards with RAM on ` board. However, he did feel pretty strongly about the AWE32 because that it has both ROM and RAM on board (and he emphasised it with no uncertain terms). Understandable as I'm very curious about that card too, although I still feel it is not an excuse that the GUS wasn't even mentioned. Also, eh also told me to watch for the READ.ME section of the mag next month. Something about the AWE32 using TSRs to get GM/MPU-401 compatablity would be mentioned 8->. I mistook his intention of the second part of his article in my gripe, and I apologise if I misled anyone. I simply blew it (though, again, I still don't share his view point about digitised music ). On my third point of 3D-sound. I still am not sure about his position on it. Sure, he told me that Focal Point can only be used with the GUS, but so far I think only the SB16 with ASP chip can do Q-sound without taxing the CPU to death. All in all, I'm just waiting for next month's second part of the cards review, which would include a "blind" listening test, and a more in-depth review of the GUS. _______________________________________________________________________________- The movie works though. I mean the "making of..." movie. But the game just doesn't want to work. I also tried with and without loading my patches with PatchManager. I tried with linear or exponential volume. I tried with 8bit and 16bit samples. I tried everything!!! I don't have anything running in Windows. I had King's Quest VI CD under Windows before and it was working perfectly. This one is giving me real troubles. Do you have any idea of what I should do that I didn't think of? Any suggestions? If I can't get this game working, I'll have to return it. That's too bad because it seems like an incredible game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you could get KQ to work under Windows, then you should get GK to work. To get these games to run under Windows, you have to have the Midi Mapper to use the Ultra1024 (or whatever size of memory you have on the GUS). Then turn 8-bit loading on in the Drivers section of Control Panel (Setup on the Ultrasound driver). Then use Patch Manager to "get from Midi file" to load "load1024.mid" or "loadgm.mid". then go into the game and you should be listening to VERY beautiful music (not the intro as it is a .wav, but the other midi music is excellent, as usual from Sierra). If you've done all that, did you install the game to use "extended midi"? Try installing it again and specify to use "extended midi". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Mar 1994 00:46:14 -0500 From: ap641@cleveland.freenet.edu (Hank Leukart) Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V11 #53 > I'm at the end of my rope with Doom 1.2. Subject: PC Magazine The April issue of PC Magazine did give the GUS a so-so review. However, I think that was because of what they were considering. It looks like to me that A) price was not in consideration, which meant that other more expensive cards can beat the GUS (ex: Turtle Beach), B) Wavetable was not a consideration, which meant that the $400 FM synthesis cards (?????) beat them. Though why anyone would pay $400 for a FM synthesis card when the Turtle Beach Multisound is avaliable for that price (slightly better at GMIDI in my opinion though certainly not as good as the GUS for digital music like MODs)... I still wonder though about their Soundblaster 16 ratings. My personal experience of hearing them produced less quality audio then the GUS...
