I've seen a lot of traffic about the number of voices supported by these two programs, but more questions than answers. I'd like to know if anybody's ever verified that either one of these programs supports more than 8 channels. Has anybody ever really verified that Doom actually supports more than 4 by editing the file? If someone believes they've verified it without calling the company, can they give me a test scenario to try? I seem to remember setting Doom to 8 and not noticing a difference (maybe I wasn't paying enough attention before and/or after?). I have a fast machine with plenty of memory and a 1MB GUS. Never a problem with Doom or the card, but I don't play many games, either. I'm not much of a PC gamer (don't have the time), but I couldn't help myself with Doom... unbelievable game. Well, it still kinda sucks, but Cyberdreams helped a little. To get some semblance of sound, make sure the irq for SB emulation is 5. Anything else and the game chokes. Sbos works ok as long as y you have a 'puter faster then a Cx486dlc-40- mine burbles and grunts and jerks with the sound effects on during races. Dialog is ok during cinematic sequences except for the ocassional stuhstutter at the beginning of each character's speech. Megarace (Software Toolworks) is fun. Great graphics. Bad, Bad beat is well, bad. Adlib only. Sbos -x2 -o2 works most of the time for me. They took out the midi driver (its mentioned in the install.exe code) but Megaem sounds better for the digital stuff anyway. It only choked once during 6 or so hours of play with a "Call gravis- unsupported SB format 5B error" or something like that. I called tech support on why they didn't support the gus if the game was so neato, and they said they were revising the CD-ROM and something should work in a couple of months... Oh well, the explosions are pretty good. Maybe Gravis could give them a hand? I bumped my Doom from 4 to 12 and hae to say it made a big difference in the amount of stuff I could hear. HOWEVER, don't forget that a minimum of 14 voices are allocated for music, so there is no way you can get 32 voices of sound effects with the music turned on... 18 would probably be the max. I don't know if you would ever notice the difference between 18 and 32 anyway. There are _rarely_ that many sounds playing in Doom at once. Just my 0.02 worth. Anyone know offhand how many voices Doom allocates for music playback? I would think 14, each at 44.1kHz. Therefore it is NOT working with sensitive cards (like GUS). (Or is SANYO so sensitive?) They are NOT bad just doesn't function in that card !!! It uses a bit more power than other ones, and this little difference doesn't make any problems normally. It is like the 486DLC CPU. It gives a bit less power than an AMD(c) or INTEL(TM=Take Motorola) one, and that's why it can hardly handle two Vesa-Local Cards. (To have three VL-cards with the DLC is almost impossible!) If you are going to by RAMs for your GUS then don't buy SANYO ! Or if you already have some and they aren't working try the ones in your video card. The should work (it doesn't matter if 70 or 80ns). Don't forget to put your SANYO chips into your video card. :-) And don't try to mix them with other ones (coz it won't work!). Hope I could explain SANYO chip-problems. What needs to be done? Don't believe the 32 channel stuff. There's likely a hard-coded limit on how many channels can be used for sound effects, and it's probably much less than 32. First of all, trying to DMA 32 channels of sound is crazy. Secondly, the GUS driver is probably operating the GUS with only 24 active voices, so there aren't 32 channels to DMA sounds to. > Date: Sun, 10 Apr 1994 22:51:52 -0700 > From: Scott Rowin > Subject: OPTI chipset fix -- where? > > Just wondering where one gets the OPTI chipset fixer.. The GUS is not totally magical, especially if the mixing is > being done in a strange way (this might be the case with Raptor). The slowdown you're referring to has little to do with the GUS. Mixing 32 channels on the GUS is virtually transparent to the CPU. However, plotting the oscilloscope displays is a CPU-intensive chore. With 32 channels, the CPU has to draw 32 plots, so of course it's not going to be able to update the screen as quickly as when it's playing 4 channels. The CPU isn't being slowed down. It just has a lot more to do, and not because of the mixing, but because of the extra work in drawing the graphics. (On other soundcards, as the number of channels goes up, the mixing chore becomes more CPU intensive _as well as_ the graphing tasks.) Thus, you can raise the maximum channel number to something I don't believe that this is the case. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the sound driver doesn't cache sound that it already plays, but instead just DMAs them as they are played. For 4 channels, there would be four small buffers in GUS RAM, and they would be emptied as they are played, so even if you play the gunshot 20,000 times a game, it would still have to be DMAed 20,000 times. > Date: Mon, 11 Apr 1994 10:49:38 -0700 (PDT) > From: "George A. AWE32 is AWEful compared to the GUS. The AWE32 does _not_ get you GM support. It relies on a driver like the GUS' Mega-Em for GM compatitibility. However, the AWE32's driver takes up 48kB of conventional memory, and can't be loaded high. Mega-Em, OTOH, takes up 0kB of conventional memory as it loads itself into EMS, where space is plentiful. Try removing Ultrajoy from your autoexec.bat and see if your MIDI port works again. Also, try using older ultrinit.exes if Ultrajoy turns out to be innocent. It's more a bus issue, I think. The ISA bus shouldn't be used to transfer multiple channels of sounds. This takes away bandwidth for things such as screen updates, etc. If the sound driver was programmed the way it ideally should have been, then the most common sound effects should be cached on the GUS instead of DMAed each time they are played. To see if it works after that, just run GRAVUTIL, it will also work with the multi i/o card... Hoping this message will provide u any help... :P Sir "Scuba" Drake P.S. Bear with me for a minute now, let's see if this is as good as it sounds... The UMax has hardware MSADPCM, m-law and u-law codecs, right? Which means you can compress wave files by as much as 4:1 while keeping their sound the same, right? Well, the 64 dollar question is : can the UMax use these codecs for PATCHES? If it can, this means that with a bit of rudimentary intelligence you can fit ANY patch bank on 1MB of RAM, with neglectible changes in quality - a RAM-based ROM-based card, so to speak. I hope this is true, since it's one motha of a selling point (Think about it - LOADPATS puts the whole GM set on-board at 16 bits!). Just got the latest ad book from Micro Center (a superstore primarily in Ohio), and lo and behold on page 28 they're selling the GUS for 129.95. There's a picture of the box and a feature blurb too. I noticed that the description has no mention of compatibility with other cards. When I called around six months ago, none of the local stores carried the GUS (CompUSA would special order it for an exorbitant sum). A correction to an earlier post of mine regarding DRAM. Chip Merchant sent me Mitsubishi parts, not NEC. They work fine. -- David Steinberg Allen-Bradley Company AGTE steinberg@iccgcc.decnet.ab.com Cleveland, Ohio ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Apr 1994 00:12:18 -0400 (EDT) From: dht@ccd.harris.com (Danh Tran) Subject: possible fix for NMI problem (Non Maskable Interrupt) To make a long story short, I had problem with disabled NMI on my motherboard. Because of that I couldn't use my synth as a MIDI IN's source (as well as running SBOS). I just bought a new PC to replace the old one. And you can imagine how upset I was to find out that the GUS card (used to work on the old system) won't work on the new PC. The "NMI procedure on this PC is disabled" was really getting on my nerve. Well I decided to take a look at all the jumpers on motherboard to see if there was any unusual setting. The only mismatch I found out was the jumpers for "CPU Type Select" was set for 486DX. However the CPU is a 486SX. So I corrected the jumpers and rebooted the system. Phewwww..... No more anoying message "NMI ... disabled". GUS MIDI IN is now working. The problem is solved. For the people who are having this NMI problem, you may want to check your motherboard again to see if this case applies to your system. Don't trust the dealer who assembled you PC. I just joined up a couple of days ago and found that these digests and FAQS really do help alot! I've had my GUS for around 1 year. I use the GUS on my 486-33 with 1 meg on the GUS card. I'm still confused about some of the terms used with software, especially with that of Raptor. What exactly are DMA Channels? What is the best configuration for GUS while playing Raptor? Also, I was considering purchasing Police Quest IV, but after reading last days digest, someone mentionned that the GUS doesn't seem to work with it. What about using the GUS drivers supplied by Sierra for the General Midi driver?
