And, it will support EIGHT digital channels. Hocus Pocus is a VGA-256 Super Mario Bros. type game, where you must fight off a huge amount of enemies with your lightning bolt spell. Includes beautifully drawn backgrounds created by Cygnus (Galactix, Raptor). If you'd like to know more about Hocus Pocus, you can read the preview of it in Game Bytes #17. Hi everyone, However, I am having problems with Bookshelf 93. I do not get any sound during the Bookshelf demos except for some clicks. I have a Zeos Pantera system which has on board audio. I am not sure whats wrong because: -On board audio has been disabled with SETUP. Though it could be possible this is messing things up and confusing Bookshelf. -Media Player is able to play midi and .snd files thru the GUS. -New Groliers Encyclopedia does play sound thru the GUS. -SBOS has been installed. I have a SOUNDBLASTER entry in the autoexec.bat file. -I have install 2.06 files for the GUS. -I have chosen Ultrasound_256 as the midi mapper. -I am using the audio output from the GUS. -I do not think I have any DMA/IRQ conflicts. -win.ini has an entry for WAVE=ultrasound -CD-ROM audio is thru a dedicated controller card. I am not using its audio output. Any suggestions. Thanks a bunch. It's not the quickest CD in the double speed market (320ms ave access, 300K/sec), but it can be had for under $200 mail-order US, and comes with Aldus Photostyler SE, which I like very much. It also comes with a controller, which doesn't require any IRQ's, which makes it easy to configure, and also allows me to add the 16bit daughter board to the GUS (remember, it's EITHER 16bit sampling OR CD controller as an add-on to the GUS). Some other nice things about it are: ----------------------------------- The controller not only has the audio out in a stereo mini-plug, but also comes with a little external audio jumper cable. You route the audio from the CD drive to the CD controller internally with the supplied cable, and then just jumper the audio out to the GUS' audio in, externally, again, with a supplied cable. This works great for me. I've got CD, MIDI, and Digital sounds all going out of the GUS on one line to my mixer. Also, there is an external CD bus connector on the card, which may come in handy if you ever add a second drive, but have no more free drive bays. -- Vic Serbe (vic@cd.com), Applications Engineer Central Data Corp. - Makers of the scsiTerminal Server 800/482-0315 or (+1) 217/359-8010 (FAX-6904) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Apr 1994 13:27:27 -0700 (PDT) From: "George A. Hi all, I just have a comment to say about the GUS. Since I've been subscribed to this digest, majority of the messages I've been reading are complaining about something wrong or not working properly with the GUS. Well, I haven't had much time to tinker with mine (since school just zaps my time), but to be frankly honest, I've never had a single problem with my GUS since the day I bought, sure there might be a few quirks here or there, but no problems. Most of the problems I believe that arise with the GUS is the software and how it is written. I've never seen one message saying that they couldn't get Future Crew's Second Reality demo running with their GUS. It's just a matter of whose writing software. To me, it seems some game companies and just making tinker toy GUS drivers which really don't work, and aren't making an effort to program this card (and from what I've read, it seems quite simple). All I have to say is that for those of us who program the GUS, we should do our best to make sure we bring the best out of the card. Otherwise, we'll be *always* facing and reading reviews saying that the GUS isn't a great sound card that it *REALLY* is. Now, is it possible for the GUS MAX to be able to compress all 192+ patches using its hardware compression and uncompress on the fly during a MIDI playback, etc.? If so, then perhaps that is the reason why the GUS MAX still can handle up to 1 MEG of memory. With the hardware compression, the patches can be the same size as the original GUS patches but sound better because when uncompressed they are actually 2-3 times bigger. I dunno. Many people would agree that the AR's are good... And those aren't cheap plastic imitations either..... atleast they aren't cheap in price... $300 in US$ for a pair.... And another thing is that even if I had a Hi-Fi which I do in the living room and my computer is in the bedroom, it won't work and I'm not going to get a Hi-Fi setup just for the computer alone and besides, did I mention I am in college right now and I have enough luggage to carry already so a hi-fi would cause even more trouble... I was just asking for the opinion of those speakers and only those that I mentioned since it would be very obvious to hook it up to a Hi-Fi.... Anyone would do that if they had one next to their machine but I don't... Just my five cents worth... Chien Jr." Subject: Will SB AWE32 make GUS obsolete? The specs for AWE32, i.e., 32 megabytes of RAM upgradable, seems to make the GUS pale. And that blind test by CGW doesn't rate the GUS as number 1. But the great feature about the GUS, is that its features are upgradeable! Okay, supposedly the MIDI isn't as good as a Roland Sound Canvas. But remember, the GUS has loadable RAM patches, so really, the less realistic sounding patches can be resampled and replace the old patches. The GUS is only as good as its patches, which can certainly be improved. Okay, so the GUS has a max of 1 MB RAM on its board, but hey, remember daughterboards can be attached to the GUS. So, maybe GRAVIS can make a 16-bit daughterboard that also has RAM sockets, then, any amount of RAM is possible. Rest assured, the GUS will have a long life. And wait till Focal Point 3D comes out for games (such as by Westwood), then we'll see who's king of virtual sound Mr. SB with QSound, which sounds like crappy FM synthesis installed on the arcades for Super Streetfighter II! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Apr 1994 18:47:20 -0500 (CDT) From: ST4FX@Jetson.UH.EDU Subject: Windows CD Audio To whoever asked about getting Windows Media PLayer to play Audio CDs, you have to go to the Windows control panel, then go into the drivers applet, select new and when you get a list of all availible generic drivers, you should see a "CD Audio" driver. Select that, insert the needed Windows installation disks, and then go to media player and select CD Audio from the Devices menu. Then just pushing the play button should start playing. ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V12 #20 *******************************
