I just wanted to let you guys know that I've installed the 3.53 disks and am also having the GPF problems in Windows. I changed my shell back to Program Manager, and that seems to have solved the problem, but now I need to run Dashboard from ProgramManager and it SUCKS! If I remember correctly, only about 4 patches were different. The guitars sound the same and are the same; the harpsichord still sux. Needless to say I was rather disappointed. My GUS only has the basic 256k onboard (I'm upgrading today), so that may be the route of my problem, but I'm not sure. By using Wavelite, I digitized a guitar sound that I liked, and then used patchmaker lite to turn that into a patch. Great. Now I have a really cool patch that I can't wait to use with my midi programs to create some music. BUT, I can't seem to be able to load the patch in! The midi program (as well as Power Chords and Patch Manager) don't list the new patch among the ones available. The only ones I seem to have access to are the original 127 that came with my software to begin with. I realize that I can probably just change the file name of an old useless patch that I have no need for, but I would rather add a new one to the list and not worry about doing that. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance. Music sounded at first fine but after an hour some songs started to sound weird (e.g. bohem.mid). Then we tried moddemo and it did't work there were continuous high beep sound at the front and mod was back somewhere. bad card we tought, so we tried my friends card and it worked just fine. Even bohem.mid + playmidi sounded and looked great. Then began the fun stuff We went to my friends and we installed my card to his computer and it worked fine, no trouble at all???? After copying the files to disk, I put disk 1 in and hit enter, after updating through the standard Gravis install program, it re-booted my computer and I was free to play around:-) first I started up DOOM. You can't really tell the difference in all levels, but some sound quite a bit better. The Tie Fighter demo sounded excellent with the new precussion patches Then I started up windows, I noticed a garbled startup sound, and Brian handed me the v3.54 update disk that he had just downloaded that fixes the problems with windows. I heard there was a new MODUS, so I tried it out, it works alot better, sounds almost as good as Capamod, and didn't seem to be a bum buddy to GPF's:) The new Patch Maker looks great, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. Same quality Gravis from all the remaining Windows apps, but I didn't notice any distinct differences. There is a new version of SBOS, but I didn't find it sounded any better for the one game I tried. What are the toggles for SBOS? The 3D demo and most of the DOS apps are the same, playmidi now has a .BMP file that is displayed in the background. Fully replacable All in all a most signifigant upgrade, the some patches sound alot better, most have been touched up. And it containes updates for much of the bundled software. Great job Gravis, now all I want is protected mode Mega-Em to use with my new patches!;-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 May 94 09:47:30 +1000 From: Remek Andrew Lipinski Subject: Network Card Problem, HELP. Hi, I have been trying to install a network card into my machine which also has a GUS (hardware version 2.2), and have been having a lot of problems. My GUS was set a default settings that is base address 220, DMA 1, irqs 11 and 5. The network card I am trying is a Western Digital Elite 16. The moment I plugget the card into the machine I strted getting problems, originally I set the network card at base address 340, irq 10, memory address 0xEC000. My GUS would no loger be found by the initialisation software and the network card would not operate properly. I figure this would be an obvious conflict, but the addresses do not suggest so. I have tried a number of addresses and irq setting of the network card, but I had the same probelms. And with just about every address I tried the card would start working properly once I took the GUS out. Next I thought, that maybe the gus is ussing up more IO address space then I thought (although I don't think that this is the case since I have a CD rom interface card at 300, and that works fine). So I tried moving the GUS up and the network card below it. I set the network card at 240 while the the GUS got moved up to 260. An presto everything seem to work now. I have absolutely no explenation for this, and it rather worries me. The only problem that I have noticed since is that I can no logher get Start-trek the 25 anniversary CD edition game to work with Mega-em, it just crashes, when it worked fine before. The network card that I am using now is a loaner, the one which I want to use is an old NE2000 which has only 4 base addresses available all above 300. Has anybody out there had similar probels? Any suggestions will be grately appreciated. Hi there Stefan. Actually, yes, I did notice this posting and I've been trying to contact the wizards at to see if they want to be an official GUS site....etc. I hasn't been a week yet but I'm still waiting for a reply. We want to determine what "status" this new site is going to get before updating our documentations. And I also want to contact them because I don't think they are mirroring the correct site hence I want to give them instructions wrt how we are setup....etc. Thanks for lurking and doing something about it! :) With the rate our archive is going, the more sites we get, the less congestions we'll have on each site. Hence the more the merrier! Thanks again for your help. Thomas. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 May 94 16:53:59 -0500 From: matthew@pi0.visim.uah.EDU (Matthew A. Hi GUSers, Just a question about the NMI problem... I recently bought a 486dx-40 (AMD) and installed the MS Mouse.EXE v9.0 driver on it. When I'm trying to load SBOS I get the message about the NMI procedure being disabled. My question is: Does this mouse driver disable the NMI permanently? And if it does how do I turn it back on? I'd just like to determine if the problem is with the motherboard or the mouse driver. I HAVE tried other mouse drivers, but I'm still getting the same message. (And my old mouse driver won't even work. It's a Dexxa 4.x driver) Thanx... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 May 94 20:03:00 -0800 From: chris.campbell@mag-net.com (Chris Campbell) Subject: TWindows Start-Up Message-ID: To everyone having problems with the Windows startup sounds, get the small patch that upgrades v3.53 to v3.54, it fixes the problems. ------------------------------ Date: 29 May 94 23:15 -0700 From: Thomas Wong Subject: Ultrasound Internet Archives News - Update GRAVIS ULTRASOUND INTERNET ARCHIVES NEWS ============================================================================== FTP Sites Archive Directories --------- ------------------- Main N.American Site: archive.orst.edu pub/packages/gravis wuarchive.wustl.edu systems/ibmpc/ultrasound Main Asian Site: nctuccca.edu.tw PC/ultrasound European Callers ONLY: theoris.rz.uni-konstanz.de pub/sound/gus Submissions: archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound/submit Newly Validated Files: archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound Mirrors: garbo.uwasa.fi mirror/ultrasound MailServer For Archive Access: Email to ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK everyone.
