The disks that I downloaded (twice to make sure the files were not bad) do not install properly. Now, Windows doesn't work properly, SBOS does not work, and I can't get ANY sound out without running software programs that say "INCORRECT VERSION". If Gravis had a head on their shoulders, they should of kept this freaking version at bay until they had all the bugs out of the installation process. But, oh no, someone was impatient to get this headache version out. Of all the other update install disks (I have gone through them all) I got from the internet, this particular version is the most fustrating. Hats off to the programming department of any version less than 3.53, and thumbs down, index up to the current one. Hi GUSsers, I had posted this message to the GUS programmer's list, and got no response whatsoever...So I am assuming the list is dead or something, so I'll ask it here. I was reading the text on my GUS's box, and it said something like digital and/or synthesized instruments. Does this mean that I can create custom synthesized instruments much in the way that I would create FM instruments with an FM instrument editor? If so, are there any programs out there that do this? Thanks! Oh, also, I just uploaded a MIDI file called UNCRTAIN.ZIP to archive.utoronto.ca under the /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit directory. Check it out if you want. Thanks again!!! =) __________________________________________________________ | | | Akintunde Omitowoju, Computer Science Student | | East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee | | InterNet: zao1@etsu.east-tenn-st.edu | | omit@wiw.org | | BitNet: zao1@etsu.bitnet | | | `----------------------------------------------------------' ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jun 1994 12:03:21 -0600 From: wcgraham@acs.ucalgary.ca Subject: Re: FINALE MABLE THE PRIZE-WINNING PIG WROTE THIS MESSAGE AND PUT IT INTO MY BRAIN: (WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?) In my limited experience with Finale, who knows what version, in Windows, I could not get it to work with my GUS, because it would only play music when NOT in Enhanced mode. I assume that this is because it wanted to access a MIDI port directy. I figured that it was a fairly archaic version, pre-"Multimedia Extensions" and all that. I don't remember much in the way of details, because the program didn't suit my needs in the slightest, and I haven't touched it since. Just a thought. - Chris, AKA Wenugo "If your something stops working, call ACS!" -- from the ACS gopher (yeah, their answering machine never stops working! -- me) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jun 1994 20:13:28 -0400 (EDT) From: mikebat@netcom.com (Mike Batchelor) Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V14 #11 Not the GUS Server once wrote... $ $ ------------------------------ $ $ Date: Wed, 22 Jun 94 12:32:23 -0700 (PDT) $ From: Francis Li $ Subject: GUS MAX upgrade? $ $ Soo...I got a reply from the Gravis tech support that a GUS MAX upgrade $ isn't available now, but will be "very soon"...now that we have missed so $ many digests, does anyone know if it is available yet? This is WACK. No ADPCM support in the MAX Windows drivers???? Well, do you have Sound Mapper installed? You need it for ADPCM recording and playback under Windows. ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developer/drg/multimedia/vfw11a.zip is your ticket. When you open an ADPCM file you don't see the waveform display but it plays back and records fine. System: DX50ISA (not Opti), 16Mb RAM, Adaptec 1540B GUS: Board v3.73, 1Mb RAM Installed the card. It came with software v3.11, but I'd already ftpped v3.53 so I used that instead. A soon as the setup than the first tests the screen flipped to 40 column mode and the message OFF BOARD PARITY ERROR ADDRESS (0000:0002) SYSTEM HALTED Wow! I'd never seen that message before. Suddenly occurred that the GUS was on IRQ 11 the same as the adaptec, so I rebooted and changed the IRQ to 7 and the tests checked out. Re-booted after the setup (I didn't ask for SBOS to be installed). Ran DOOM. Amazing music, now I realise why I bought the GUS *8>) However, no sound effects. Exited doom to double check that I had chosen the GUS for both music and effects and unfortunately I had. Tried dmp v3.00. It detected the GUS and started playing, but no sound. I turned the amp. onto full volume and very quietly, even below the amp. hiss, I could hear the music. Changed the card settings from the defaults with IRQ 7 to GUS IRQ 12 + GUS DMA 7. Started Doom again. The default demo mode in doom, the guy with the pistol walks spins around and opens a door, the sound effect for the door occured, but that was it. I've tried doom many, many times and that is the one and only time I heard a sound effect. I did actually try it once with SBOS loaded and effects set to soundblaster and heard the effects, but with music on GUS and effects on SB all I get is the music. By this time I thought I'd try the advanced diagnostics. All check out okay except for the DRAM which detected I had 1M, but failed the check. I removed the DRAMS in 256K banks and checked after each. Only when I got down to the original GUS 256K did the DRAM finally check out okay. I swapped the other DRAMs around and tried in vain to get a working 512K, but no luck. So, I presume that either all the extra 768K, installed by the company I purchased the GUS from, is faulty or there is some problem on the card? I had actually noticed slight glitches in some of the music I'd heard, maybe faulty DRAM explains this? Tried some of the GUS demos from the ftp archives. Again, great music. A few of the demos just hung the machine. Tried some of the GUS games from the archives. Raptor, music, but no sound effects. Tetris, seemed okay. It did mention on start-up that it may hang with emm386 loaded, but it didn't. However, maybe that explains why those demos did? I've tried all of this with and without ASPI4DOS, HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.EXE (the later to with combinations of the version supplied with MSDOS 5 & 6.2), but with no improvement. Also, noticed in doom that with a lot of monsters on the screen the music slows down noticably. Is this usual? Anyway, is my card bad or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for staying with me though this. ------------------------------ Date: 23 Jun 94 14:09 -0700 From: Thomas Wong Subject: Ultrasound Internet Archive Services News - New services GRAVIS ULTRASOUND INTERNET ARCHIVES NEWS ============================================================================== FTP Sites Archive Directories --------- ------------------- Main N.American Site: archive.orst.edu pub/packages/gravis wuarchive.wustl.edu systems/ibmpc/ultrasound Main Asian Site: nctuccca.edu.tw PC/ultrasound Main European Site: src.doc.ic.ac.uk computing/audio/ultrasound Submissions: archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound/submit Newly Validated Files: archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound Mirrors: garbo.uwasa.fi mirror/ultrasound Gopher Sites Menu directory ------------ -------------- Main Site: src.doc.ic.ac.uk computing/audio/ultrasound WWW Page -------- Main Site: http://src.doc.ic.ac.uk/computing/audio/ultrasound/ MailServer For Archive Access: Email to Email to New Submit Files Mailing List: Email to ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello everyone. Notice the much bigger header above? Yes, we are on the grow again! Thank you for the support of everyone! Please look at the header above for details. But I'm more than happy to annouce the availability of the following new services: - a New European FTP site (one of the biggest in Europe) - New gopher service - New WWW service - a New Mailserver/Ftpmail service A great big thanks to Lee for putting all this together! Thanks for all the support for GUS by everyone! We now have more services and in fact more different types of services than I'd ever imagine. And don't forget the digests which isn't listed above. With digests, ftpmails, ftp sites all over the world, gopher, WWW.... what more can we ask for? .... don't worry, I'll think up more and more stuff to add to our list of services. To keep us forever on the grow! :) Happy GUSing! I did get xwngsnds.zip before it disappeared. I no longer have Xwing, so I can't check whether I've still got all the right files, but a couple of GUS owners over here at CIX are sorting it out. Do you lot want us to upload it to the ftp sites when we've got it all working, or has it reappeared again?
