Subject: Bank Switching questions Dunno if this is the right GUS digest to post such a question but... How limited is the GUS Windows driver's Bank Switching capabilities. I have patches for certain banks and when I play midi's that use those banks, the patches I hear (specifically the Drum Patches) are the ones in Bank 00, not another Bank. I already used Bank Manager and added the new patch configurations... still here Drum Bank 00 patches. BTw, does Ultramid use bank switching? If so, how do I edit the ultramid.ini file (or was it ultramid.cfg?) -George ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Nov 1994 14:05:08 -0500 (EST) From: David A Denis Subject: Digest Being archived? Of course this all depends on whether you CAN send and distrubute the file. But as far as I understand, why shouldn't a DOOM2 owner be able to. Also to Derek Suzuki, the newest SBOS I know of is 3.82 and works with armada, so you might try that with WC3. Secondly is WC3 Demo CD, if not or if so, where can I get a copy. In addition, I have also had some trouble with PCTools for Windows and GUS Drivers. The problem had something to do with not having the GUS set as first WAVE and MIDI device. Make sure that if you have drivers for another card that you have the GUS Drivers as WAVE= and MIDI=, and the next drivers are WAVE2= and MIDI2=. I'm not sure that was the problem, but it seemed to fix it for me. If you mean a normal consumer digital amplifier, it uses SP/DIF for digital input (either coax or optical). I don't know much about the DAC on the GUS, but if it's a separate chip, it should use some kind of a serial data format, which means you have two pins, one for clock and one for digital data. So if you find this out (check some apropriate data book), you'll need to connect a SP/DIF transmitter in place of the DAC to be able to speek to your digital amplifier. There are more SP/DIF transmitters, but the only one I know positively about is from Crystal Semiconductors. Part number is CS8402 or CS8412 (one from these is a transmitter, another one is a receiver). But you'll have troubles buying those in one-two pieces, as far as I know. You'll have to find someone that buys in hundreds and sells in pieces. Then you'd need a toslink transmitter (for optical output) or some transformer circuit for coax output. Toslink transmitters are made by Toshiba. That's all I know about this problem. Those CS84xx parts do recognise up to six or eight different serial digital data formats, so if you find something like that on GUS, you won. Also, it is second hand, and comes without manuals or drivers. Does it need drivers? Is it difficult to set up? Stefan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Nov 1994 00:53:47 -0500 (EST) From: Gunnar Swanson Subject: WC3 Demo and the GUS Dear GUSers Here is the deal on the WC3DEMO. One when you first start the demo it will put a small directory on your HD c:\wc3 if I am not mistaken. The demo program will then ask for your sound card settings. The demo only supports SOUNDBLASTER and Gmidi. I did not try this with a GUS so I do not know if Gmidi will work. In order to change the sound card settings to something new you will need to deltree the c:\wc3 dir and rerun the wc3demo program. Then choose different sound card setings. This must be done everytime you want to change the settings. Also note this demo needs XMS not EMS so you will want to rem the EMM386.EXE line in your config.sys file. Note, you may get scratchy sound in SBOS. I tested this on an Aria at work and it uses SB emulation. Lastly this demo is KILLER. The game looks to be extremely cool. Good Luck and happy GUSING. Sincerely, Gunnar Swanson end. ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V16 #8 ******************************
