I keep hearing about people having trouble getting their GUS and CD to work together. I have a regular GUS, not sure of the version, I have had it for about 2 years though. So, I'll be using the interface card coming with the CD drive. Any suggestions are appreciated. Feel free to simply email them. Somewhere in the UK would be nice ;-) The cable that I got with the CD-ROM drive has a 4 pin plug (suitable for SoundBlaster?), but the GUS MAX has a 3 pin socket -- I've tried Maplin, Tandy and RS for the parts but with no success :-( and I'd rather not solder the cable directly onto my GUS MAX. Has anybody experienced any strange "drifting" when playing TIE Fighter with a joystick and with either megaem or sbos loaded? Despite repeated attempts to re-calibrate the joystick during the game, my Imperial Fighters seem to have a mind of their own. The problem goes away if I don't load megaem or sbos and play with no sound FX and no music :-((( I've experienced this behaviour on two machines with my GUS MAX; an ISA i486SX-25 and a VL i486DX2-66. I don't experience any joystick calibration problems playing DOOM, Wacky Wheels or Raptor!? Any help appreciated, Mark. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Nov 1994 22:55:35 -0700 (MST) From: Ignatius Tam Subject: cd input jack Forwarded message: > > Date: 12 Nov 1994 21:16:00 +0100 > From: tom@cat.ping.de (Thomas Adams) > Subject: CD Input jack pinout? > > Who can tell me the pinout of the 4 pin CDROM audio input on a GUS V3.4? Yes, the middle ones are grounds. Just sort out the others by experiment. For example, use Recording Session to play a MID, and pan it completely one way. Adjust your cable so that it pans to the correct speaker. (Otherwise we'll get a discussion like "While standing on your head, looking up at the GUS, the R pin is the one...") ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Nov 1994 00:31:01 -0700 (MST) From: Ignatius Tam Subject: doom2 fixes... Hi, sorry for posting another one... if you guys don't know, a new (1.7a) patch for doom2 is out and it fixes the scratchy/shitty sound that plagues the original doom2, it seems very stable (i don't know)... i've got it in ftp.uml.edu/msdos/games/id can't remember the filename, sorry... warning: patch will take a long time if you do not have a diskcache (i think), so don't complain... -iGnatius ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Nov 1994 11:51:21 GMT From: Clarke Brunt Subject: Re: Games using GUS and CD > I'm using DOS 5 and I can set up an autoexec.bat > and config.sys to load the SCSI CD programs > allowing me to access my SCSI CD ROM drive on E: > But, when I run sbos or ultramid, my E: drive > becomes inaccessible No longer a valid drive. Sounds like a clash between the IO address for your SCSI card, and the address that the TSRs are trying to trap sound output on. I remember the documentation for megaem discussing the default address for Adaptec SCSI cards being the same as the address of a Roland something-or-other which they were emulating. I haven't got these docs to hand, but would have thought that attempting to move your SCSI card to another address was a possibility. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Nov 1994 11:31:18 -0800 (PST) From: Vhold Subject: Gus 3d, anything yet? I was just wondering if anything has come out yet that uses the 3D capabilities on the gus (besides that one demo with the head anyways) Seems like a game company or somebody would find that useful and try using it, but so far, apparently not. Anybody know of any plans by anybody to use it? Id planned to use it with doom but they didn't, I heard epic megagames wanted to make some game with it, but that hasn't happened yet, anybody know? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Nov 1994 18:22:09 -0500 From: rezaei@tristan.TN.CORNELL.EDU (Mohammad Ali Rezaei) Subject: GUS and System Shock Demo Solution System Shock demo works fine with the gus. All you have to do is the usualy AIL trick. SS uses the 32bit ail drivers (found in the file gail32*.zip). Also included in gail32 is full instructions for getting things to go (essentially you replace the sound blaster and the mt32 drivers with the gus ones, loadpats and then run the game with sb+mt32). If you need more details let me know. Hope this helps. -Mohammad P.S. thanks for the Earth Siege fix. I too only get drums, but for this game the digital is the most important. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Nov 1994 13:59:50 -0800 (PST) From: Stephen Thomas Brindle Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V16 #13 > Date: Sat, 12 Nov 1994 13:16:36 -0600 (CST) > From: Antonio Guia > Subject: starting out auxilliary software > > For those of you who have just gotten a GUS and would like to just get > the files while will help you out, or the most recent software, check on > ftp.umanitoba.ca in the pub/gus directory. Im in need of some help here...a few days ago I brought a mitsumi fx001d 2x cdrom drive, and instead of getting the daughter-board for my gravis, I decided to use the controller card that came with the drive. The controller card is a WDH-7001C BTW:) Anyway, I would like to have the audio line from the cdrom drive to connect to my gus...the audio line that came with the drive though was not the right type...so off I went to the local gus dist. here in Wellington, NZ, and the "gus expert" there tried to hook the audio from the drive to the gravis cd audio connections.. he couldnt get any sound through the Gus at all...it was coming through the drive though as we chucked some speakers into the headphones jack of the drive.. After all that, I would like to know if anyway has achieved getting this going, and if so, a description of what I need to do would be very helpful:)...even a diagram if your any good at ascii drawings;).. Anyway, im not very knowledgable about cdrom drives or soundcards, so any help would be most appreciated:) Thanx Vin. ___ {~._.~} ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ( Y ) + vinnie@akeake.its.ac.nz [internet] voice +644 297 1362 + () S () +michael.vincent@3:771/1360 [fidonet] data/fax +644 297 1330 + /(_)---(_)\ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ~ ~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Nov 1994 10:21:04 GMT From: Clarke Brunt Subject: Re: New "gus-games" mailing-list >I don't know if it's the case for many people on this list, but I don't care too >much about games, and I don't read messages about them on the digest. I'd still vote for it, but we went through the whole exercise once before. There was only one list (if you don't count gus-sdk), and after much discussion we split into gus-general and gus-music, whereas what me and some others wanted was gus-games (then we could unsubscribe from it) and gus-everything-else. With the present split, gus-music is a waste of time because there is virtually no traffic in it. If you want a proper discussion, you *have* to post to gus-general. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Nov 1994 00:46:14 -0600 From: Gene Shaw Subject: Playing Midi in Linux? Hello I was wondering how to play midi files under linux. I looked at some of the midi players on Sunsite but they where all for FM based cards at least as far as I could tell I know that somehow that all of the Gus Patches are going to have to be accessiable by Linux but still there is a need for some sort of config file, or enviroment variable that will point to where the patchs are stored. I tried doing a cat file.mid >/dev/sequencer it didn't work at all said no such device at address. Everything else works fine mixer, gmod, cat .au's to /dev/audio, and so forth. Can Linux even play midi files. Also another question is it possible to make the GUS play a file say whip.au everytime the system makes the pc speaker beep. The reason I ask is because I no longer have a pc speaker and it would be really handy if I could do this. What would be really neat is if I could assign different sounds to different events. Example One for new mail, One for a talk request and so forth. I looked at the Howto's on this one but there was really nothing on this subject at least nothing that I could find. Hi all, Has anyone tried 'Transport Tycoon' (Microprose UK) with the GUS? I've seen some posting on USENET saying that using the GUS causes the music to go beserk (eg playing all the patches on the card memory) and the sound causes the game to pause for a few seconds every few minutes.
