Well, Gravis and Amd are up to something. If you ask Gravis, they'll just tell you they're cowrking on 'something', which is understandable, just think what would of happened if Creative Labs got hold of Wavetable synthesis before Gravis, no GUS... From wha I heard, at Comdex, when AMD was aksed about the partnership, they siad they didn't want to start from the ground up developing redundant technology, and wanted to partner with an experienced Wavetable card manufacturer. All I had to do was follow the directions posted here for EarthSiege (i.e., edit RESOURCE.CFG and change sound driver to E024 (E028 for MAX) and music driver to A002, Addr=228 ). I don't get music though, but I'm happy enough to have good sound that I don't care. Using the ail30 (unoffical beta) drivers uploaded to epas (thanks!!) I got the Warcraft demo to give me sound AND music. The procedure is a bit tricky, and I don't know if it would work with the full version, so I'll only post it if someone requests it. -- Dave (dball@hp8c.nrl.navy.mil) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Dec 94 19:23:16 MST From: dchow@stu.athabascau.ca (Donald Chow) Subject: Re: BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK > Date: Wed, 07 Dec 1994 10:33:19 GMT > From: Clarke Brunt > Subject: Re: BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK > > I am probably not the only one getting annoyed by > BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK and 12 lines of rubbish attached to > messages. There's that old saying, 'One will get burnt when one flames what he doesn't understand'. PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy, it's an encryption technique based on RSA key encryption, probably the most secure form of encryption, and as close to unbreakable as you can get your paws on. As for need, well, if someone doesn't think privacy isn't important, well we won't go into that. There has been some talk lately about higher-quality patches that replace the original GM-patches. Isn't there *one* zip-file (or similar) available somewhere that contains good substitutes for *all* the patches that supposedly need to be replaced? Of course these patches would have to be rather small (not exceeding the size of the original patches), or they wouldn't fit in the GUS's memory. I'd be happy to create a file like this myself, but my supply of patches is very limited. :( /Olof Sundin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Dec 1994 13:34 -0500 From: DANTONIO@PROCESS.COM (Momentary Language, Sexual Situations) Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V17 #7 > I've considered getting OS/2 for quite a while, but the biggest thing >that's keeping me back is the lack of VxD support for Windows programs >under OS/2, which means no sound for Windoze apps. No, WARP will NOT support .VxDs since they are allowed (encouraged, actually) to directly play with the hardware. This would effectively trash the "Crash Protection" of OS/2, not to mention the general security of the OS. You'll note that Windows NT doesn't support them, either. The correct solution is to create non-VxD drivers for the GUS. That way, both WINOS2 and the folks who still run Windows in Standard Mode can have sound. That said, Robert Manley's fine OS/2 drivers provide vitual GM support so one can now play MIDI files in Windows without an external synth. WAVs are out of the question, though. I will VERY pleased if Gravis's much promised OS/2 drivers allow both OS/2 and WinOS2 sound. But I'm not expecting it... I know that in a few months, everyone will be just happy as heck with these hmi drivers, and all the new and good games will use them--and all will have GUS support, and we will all have a sound card that supports everything in native mode. Until that time however, these drivers just drive me nuts! Case in point: Accolade has just released Unnessesary Roughness 95. It's pretty cool, with full NFL and NFLPA support, new Al Micheals speech, and over half the players have real photos. The teams, rostors, league play, all make this one of the best football sims out there. Except.... the HMI support. The drivers that are shipped with it are quite old. No gus. At least they were the HMI*.386 drivers, so here's what I did... I copied all the sound files out of the SOS directory from NASCAR, which as we know had flawless gus support. After remaning the .bnk files to whatever UR had called them, I ran the setup, and still no gus choice. Obviously the choices are hard coded and not pulled from any .ini or .386 file. Through trial and error, I managed to get the install program to work using sbos -o5. The game wouldn't work, but at least I could them see the sound config file. I managed to change the file with my favourite hex editor from e004 (SB) to e024 (gus). I run the game, it works with native gus--kind of. The sound is all there, but it's like only one can play at once. I'm still playing around with the config file, so when I'm done I'll post the final fix. But for now, here's the info: Game : Unnessesary Roughness 95 By : Accolade Type : Football Sim GUS : None, but can be partially patched with HMI drivers from NASCAR Patch : use sbos -o5 to set up for soundblaster, use hex editor to change fi.cfg to use driver e024 instead of e004 By the way, can we not have some standard way of making reviews like this? Now > that would make it a killer card. There are more than enough patches to fill out the GS requirements, I would imagine. If you want GS compatibility, that would have to happen in the driver - it would have to map GS bank select/patch select commands to the appropriate patches. The UltraSound drivers are set up so that you can make up banks with any sounds you want, and up to 1024 or more of them, as well. Right now all the sounds in one melodic or drum bank have to be in the same subdir. The Power Patch CD has the patches organized by set, and has copies in one huge subdir as well. So you can make a bank up using any of the patches that you want. Eric, Howling Dog Systems ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Dec 1994 15:25:30 -0600 (CST) From: "David L. What you see at the end of the "offending" person's post is their public key, which allows you to send them encrypted mail messages (provided you have pgp installed on your system) by encrypting it with their public key. Some people, as you have noticed, distribute their public key through a .signature file. While this would not be my personal choice, I don't think there is anything unacceptable about doing it this way. It is definitely not there "for show" as you would suggest. VxD support cannot and will not be added soon and possibly ever. Given that even MS doesn't want companies to use them in their new driver model, I think this will steadily become less of an issue. As for now sound under Windoze apps, there is! The registered users of my driver would be quite happy to tell you about the fuzzy warm feeling they get when firing up MidiSoft recording studio under WinOS2 and getting nice sounding music from their GUS (but not as nice as under real Win).
