Billinge" Subject: AMD wavetable chip Here's another bag of rumors to add to your collection. I heard them all from someone who visited a recent trade show in Germany, so I have no reason to doubt them. No facts and figures I'm afraid. If you know any more about the following, or want to tell me I'm talking a load of bull (that's not my intention), please do so. 1. The new chip is designed to be built in to the main PC processor. 2. It contains a great big extremely clever fancy DSP. 3. It is downwardly compatible with the SoundBlaster. 4. It is GRAVIS ULTRASOUND compatible! 5. It can address a larger amount of memory than a GUS. 6. The sound quality is superior to any currently available soundcard. 7. It uses hard drive based patches, but for all I know may have ROM also. So basically it's a go-faster GUS on a chip, possibly built into the processor. This means that potentially AMD can add it to their CPU designs and every new AMD-based PC will be GUS compatible! Good eh? Mark Billinge ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Dec 94 11:10:56 MET From: (Martijn de Jong) Subject: CD-Rom problem Hi Gussers, I have a Philips CD-Rom player CM-206 and I have some programs to record RAW data or WAV data from an audio-cd. My problem is that when I try to use these programs I get a message that my cd-rom can't read the data. When I run a diagnose to see if it should be able to read audio data directly it says it should. Did anyone else have this problem and solve it (or never had the problem with a Philips CD-rom) I know that Mitsumi cd-roms can't read the data, but I hadn't heard so far that Philips cd-roms can't either. Thanks is advance, Martinus. P.S. I shouldn't be mailing this question to this list, as it doesn't really have anything to do with the gus, but I know the digest is one of the best-read groups with many smart people so please don't flame me on this one. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Dec 94 13:09:49 "CST From: Jim English Subject: cyberwar hey, I was wondering how good the Native GUS support on Cyberwar is. It looks like an interesting game, but the part on the box about 320x200 scares me. I mean why put a game on 3CD's if it's just going to be 320x200. Anyone have this game? I'd like to hear what it really looks/ sounds like in action. -jim -- ______________________________________________________________________________ Jim English - jenglish@hpserv.keh.utulsa.edu / EJP51823@vax1.utulsa.edu ______________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Dec 94 11:04:39 CST From: dwaldron@ccmail.rrddts.donnelley.com Subject: Good Times! So you can make a bank up using any of the patches that you want. Hmm.. either I don't know what you're talking about or ... Anyways, I found out that to properly bank switch, first of all, you need a midi player that supports bank switching. Using Cakewalk Pro 3.0, I was able to play midi files that used the standard melodic patches (which reside in my /ultrasnd/midi directory) and the power drum patches (which reside in my /ultrasnd/midi/bank16 directory). Strange thing is, I have to have the power drums which are officially in bank 16 be in bank 17 because Cakewalk Pro 3.0 has the Power Drums patch number to bank 17. Quite strange. Now I must note this that the drivers cannot bank switch via the SysEx auto bank switch command. That leaves me to reading the midi events and check which bank it uses and manually editing the midi file. This work gets tedious on some midi files, but once i got it saved, it's showtime. As for your Howling Dogs CD collection of GUS patches, I would be interested in purchasing it so I can get my hands on the orchestra/jazz drum patches, but I don't have access to a CD-ROM player. Don't you sell separate banks on disk? -George ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Dec 1994 14:43:57 -0500 From: GravisTech@aol.com Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V17 #8 >>From: Francis Li >>Subject: Warp Drivers/MEGA-EM Beta? >>Since Advanced Gravis is apparently a little behind schedule >>in the OS/2 drivers and the new MEGA-EM, and is unwilling to >>release them unless they are complete... >>Is there a way us users on the InterNET can become "legal" >>beta testers for this? Each instrument could take up to a whopping 700k+ such as the Acoustic Grand Piano that's included in ProPats! There's is no way possible to even load all the General MIDI instruments at the same time due to this memory limitation. That's why they use patch cacheing. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Dec 1994 11:01:04 -0600 (CST) From: cannon@netcom.com (Chris Cannon) Subject: GUS works with Warcraft!! Ok, so this doesn't belong on a GUS list, but there is far too much misinformation out there about PGP. Yes, PGP is an encryption package, but it's also an *authentication* package. What you see at the end of a PGP signed message is not the person's key, but is a message digest (like a hash function) of the contents of their email, encrypted with their private key. This can be decoded with the individual's public key (availble from PGP keyservers worldwide) and if the resulting message digest matches the message, then you *know* that the person who appears in the From line actually sent it. Now, just for the sake of argument, I'm going to PGP sign this. :) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: 2.6 iQCVAwUBLueT8ZM3vmyXnQsJAQHTzAQAlwZm6oOAgklzgnGJeU5BlUT1EZruLnBh FDhanmb/ExMfgiAHciQH5r5AEEIOajq9OEBghBHf9QNsBCI6Vf8vKQ8amjjzOQR7 77EBDf0prSwVcP2/QmRuUz+hbW8DEfa7UwARURmwOFFFO6OIxpDTqmcdpINnkHLh YSvgH6cb0NE= =+ccx -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- So, that bit up there, you can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt (unless I give away my public key, and its passphrase -- not bloody likely) that I wrote it. So you can make a bank up using any of the patches that you want. The question is, how would one use these patches with existing .mid format files (as opposed to .pow or other format files). The only .mid-format compatible (i.e. reads and writes .mid files without changing them, or with only minimal change) sequencer I know of that maps CC0/CC32 changes into the wBank argument for bank switching is wincake, and then only for drum banks. I reputted it on my harddisk lately and saw that the install asks if you really want to add the speech to the game as it costs a lot of HD-space. Of course I didn't care, so I installed them but I haven't found any speech so far. The question is: Does anyone have speech with this game? This is for digital music and sfx only. Midi music is not supported. In other words, this fix will give you music, digital speech and sfx in the intro and digital sfx but no music during gameplay. For GUS: Choose none for music and sb16 for digital. Save the settings and exit the program. Using a hex editor, edit the wc3.cfg file in your wc3 directory. Change 17E00000 to 25E00000 and change 16E00000 to 24E00000. Save these new settings and the demo should work. For GUS MAX: Same as GUS but change 17E00000 to 29E00000 and 16E00000 to 28E00000 ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V17 #9 ******************************
