Half the sounds in Myst are just stupid pops or buzzes now. Some of the sounds work sometimes and not others. It was pretty disappointing to move to the newest Windows driver and have the sound quality in Myst *worsen*. Has anyone gotten Myst working well with the new driver? I'm tempted to go back to my original windows driver (which came with my GUS). Also, has anyone used the Reveal keyboard with a GUS? What extra equipment would I need to hook the Reveal up to the GUS? I remember they have an >address at aol and gravis.com but don't know the exact >addresses. tech@gravis.com was their first address, I think, but I heard it was split into tech1 and tech2. Try gravistech@aol.com though; supposedly you get a faster response, according to that person's post. Actually, I have managed to get all my email replied, but it definitely takes a lot of time. They do answer though, at least based on my own experience. I sent in my wish list of the next UltraSound, and they said they'll implement some of it, which resulted in the MAX. I also told them it would be a great idea to market the GF1 as a DSP, and sure enough, they called it a DSP. So Gravis does listen to its customers (by email); it just takes them a long time, and it does take some pushing from all of us (well it's working for the OS/2 driver). But phone calls are probably difficult (long distance, busy, etc.). The only gripe I have is the black hole they keep for registration cards; I should have kept it in case I want to resell my USound, which I'll do when they have an even newer UltraSound. -Peter ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Jan 95 21:48:00 PST From: Ingles D Subject: Gravis Ultrasound disks ver 3.57 Hi, I've just installed the ver 3.57 disks on my machine and am using them with a Ultrasound 256KB in a 486DX33 8MB machine. I notice now when the sound card is accessed under windows, a small click appears before the desired sound. It happens even with the Windows startup and shutdown sounds. Also, I now can no longer use mod4win v2.12 in 44KHz 16bit mode (ok in 22KHz 16bit though) which used to work under the version 2 drivers which I decided to replace with the 3.57 drivers. A couple of times I've had problems exiting Windows because it thinks the GUS is still in use (when it isn't) and causes program manager to crash when it tries to fire the shutdown sound. I've even tried reinstalling completely from scratch - windows and the 3.57 drivers. I've tried Windows version 3.1 and 3.11 as well. It was slightly worse with 3.11 in my opinion. Has anyone had similar experiences / found any work-arounds ? (before I revert back to the version 2 drivers ....) I simply unzip all the files into a temp directory, and ran install. It didn't ask ofr disk two or anything, just went and did its thing. Now the problem is, after installing it, I've had strange problems regarding overall operation of my box. Once it said I didn't have the ULTRADIR environment variable set, but I know it IS set, or supposed tobe set (it really wasn't but should have been). Rebooted and it ran fine. Strange thing number two, after the reboot, I went into Windows, and Systeem Watch reported 95% CPU usage when I wassn't doing ANYTHING AT ALL. Exited Windows, ran it again andd everything was fine. Now I don't thing its the new GUS driver's fault (its Windows driver v.348), but it's just strange weird things happened after I've installed it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jan 1995 14:17:22 -0800 From: sullivan@bbn.com (Mike Sullivan) Subject: GUS and Master of Magic I am trying to make my GUS work with Master of Magic v1.2 . It supports separate music and digital effects cards so I ran megaem and emuset. If I use the 220,1,1,11,5 parameters for the GUS then the install utility can't find the card. If I use 220,1,1,7,5 then the install program finds a music card but not a digital effects card. Is there a way to get both music and sound effects? Should I be using SBOS instead of megaem? The music is pretty crummy, so I suppose that if I had to make a choice I would pick the sound effects instead of the music. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jan 1995 13:17:47 -0600 (CST) From: John Patrick Lestrade Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V18 #3 > Date: Tue, 03 Jan 1995 11:25:26 -0600 > From: Don Eller > Subject: version 3.59 of GUS disks now on EPAS > > I downloaded, and attempted to install the latest version 3.59 of Gravis > Ultrasound install disk. I think that all the acoustics GUS MIDI instruments sounds like shit. For example, the piano. Do you have heard the piano ? My good ! It's horrible. It sounds like the adlib. ;) And with the games ? Now, All the new games are in protected mode, like sbos or megaem. Then they wont work with the gus emulations... And naturaly, they don't have a GUS option in its setup. I just wanted to say hi to whatever person who said that NMI wasn't necessary with the new maxsbos. Now, when I heard about that new SB-emulator, I got very excited. It was supposed to sound a lot better than SBOS because it utilized the whole 512Kb (or 1Mb as in my case) memory of the GUS and that Codec chip of the max to produce wonderful AWE32-like sound. AND - it didn't, as I earlier mentioned, NEED NMI! Which was very good news to me since I have a PCI mainboard without Non Maskeable Interrupts. (Which, again, stops me from using SBOS and my MIDI-keyboard in windows because these requires NON MASKEABLE INTERRUPTS!) So, I downloaded maxsbos, got home very excited, installed the emulator and... "The NMI-procedure on this PC is disabled." I stared at the monitor. Did I just read that? Had I, by some mistake, run SBOS? Because that's the message I get everytime I run SBOS, you know. Because my PCI mainboard DOES NOT HAVE NON MASKEABLE INTERRUPTS!!! But no. It was maxsbos I had run. And that brings me to my point: Who was that person who said, in an earier letter to the digest, "It doesn't require NMI". I would like to come to your home, stuff your monitor up your a**, and force you to eat your GUS, raw. Gravis. Why are you doing this to me? And to everyone else who lately has bought a PCI-mainboard without NMI. Didn't it occur to you that it would be a good idea to drop the whole NMI-bussiness altogether after receiving a lot of mail complaining about SBOS not working? I mean, SBOS wasn't a tragic loss to me. But that my MIDI-keyboard has to stand in a corner, gathering dust, because MIDI-recording requires NMI, now that's tragic. (Still, I want to thank the programmers who are making soundtrackers with the possibility of recording songs through MIDI-keyboard. No NMI trouble there.) Well. I guess this is what netpeople call flaming. And by George I feel the right to be (a-)flaming. I've spent a lot of money on the GUS, going from standard GUS to GUSMAX (without ever hearing about any "upgrade offer"), spending a good deal of money on the MIDI-interface and a MIDI-keyboard which I have no use of, memory etc. The support that Gravis offer to the large masses is great. But when it comes to small groups, like OS/2-users, computers without NMI, etc, those are ignored completly. Please, Gravis. You don't have to use NMI in all your products. Suggesting that I should buy a new mainboard is a waist of time. I don't think the GUS is worth more of my money now. Do better. +------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | 'It isn't easy being a cop, you know.' | |odd_oden@embla.gih.no | |Odd Kenneth Oden That's right.
