Hey, man... looks like you really wanted to start a flame war... =) If you read soundcards usenet groups, there're plenty of messages titled "AWE32 vs. GUS" or similar.. but there're also many, many, many messages titled "AWE32: crappy noisy sound". Well.. I should rate you to read those messages... ;-) Anyway.. I do own a GUS and a Sound Galaxy equipped with the Roland SCD-15 daughterboard, and I've installed hundreds of soundcards (mostly CL cards), and I can say that the AWE32 is not that beast that is meant to be. It's not a bad card at all, but it almost costs twice a GUS, and I think that the difference isn't worth the price; it sounds in a different way than the GUS, but I wouldn't say that it sounds better (this opinion is related to MIDI files): besides it has the same shitty mixer than the SB16, and that gives that noisy output that people is reporting in the news. But you know... sounds comes tru' the hears to the brain, and everything you hear is filtered by your tastes.. it's then possible that the AWE32 sounds better than a GUS to your taste. I just report you this: a friend of mine got an AWE... when he heard my GUS playing midi files, he immediately sold his card and bought a GUS MAX. And... about the piano patches... I think that these are the nicest pianos I've ever heard: even better than Roland's ones... I don't like at all Gus' original Reeds and OD/Dist Guitar patches, but you know, tastes are tastes. ;-) Season greetings Carlo Ferrari carlo@varano.ing.unico.it Informatics Tech Hardware & Software consultant/installer Universita' di Como - Italy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jan 1995 23:15:50 -0800 (PST) From: "Peter C. Busalacchi " Subject: Anyone else having problems with Hell? Message-ID: Hi, I just bought my UltraSound MAX so I am fairly new to this digest. At any rate, I just purchased the game Hell from Take 2 software, and I am having some problems. (I talked to Take 2's technical support, and of course, they were useless...) All of the sound in the game (music and speech) has a clicking and poping sound mixed in. It's pretty rough. The game does have native GUS support, so it has nothing to do with any emulation. At first I thought it had something to do with my CD-ROM setup, because I was probing and not using a definate DMA. I changed that, and it still doesn't work. Everything is set to the default, except the GUS IRQ is 7 instead of 11. I am using the Sony CDU33A CD-ROM drive, set to DMA 3, and IRQ 11. I have tried many different combinations, and nothing seems to help. Any help is greatly apreciated! Thanks in advance! -- Eric M. Secondly a problem I'm having as a new CD-ROM owner. My CD-ROM player is a MITSUMI FX-001D and the audio-out lead, which normally connects to the interface card supplied with the drive, is not compatible with the CD audio in connector (JP7) on the GUS. However, I have solved that small problem by re-terminating the cable to match the GUS - left, ground, ground, right. I did this because I thought that I would then be able to control the output volume of an audio CD in software (using Gravis' Sound Station or CDdb - the latter is a UK shareware program). However, despite being able to control the volume of played-back .WAV and .MID files using these programs I cannot control the volume of played back audio CDs using them. I still have to use the volume controls on the external speakers - which is a bit of a pain in the proverbial! I know that there have been some posts in the past on using various CD drives with the GUS but I cannot find anything in them (or the FAQ) on this particular problem. Note that I am not using the GUS to control the drive - it is not a MAX nor do I have the daughter board. I am using the very latest drivers (3.47 I believe or was it 5.47 - no matter they are the latest available) together with the latest disk set. Hope that this does not cover old, familiar ground but I would appreciate any advice. An answer on the digest might help others who have a similar problem but direct e-mail would be OK. Myst works great for me. In fact the 5.47 upgrade improved the sound for me. I used to get this buzzing click at the end of sound effects with the 5.45 drivers. With the 5.47 drivers, the sound is crisp and very solid. Although if you want to go back to the 5.45 drivers, I don't think you'll suffer much. Just make sure you copy over the right files so that the version drivers and the mixer don't disagree. Although unlikely, maybe you have the sound buffers set to a bad value for Myst. > Date: Tue, 03 Jan 95 21:48:00 PST > From: Ingles D > Subject: Gravis Ultrasound disks ver 3.57 > > Hi, > > I've just installed the ver 3.57 disks on my machine and am using them with > a Ultrasound 256KB > in a 486DX33 8MB machine. > > I notice now when the sound card is accessed under windows, a small click > appears before the desired sound. Using Mod4Win to play mods is wasting GUS. Mod4Win mixes the MOD and treats your GUS like a Sound Blaster. Mod4Win also does intensive CPU mixing which is a total waste of the GUS' capabilities. Also, Mod4Win takes up system memory. The bigger your MOD, the less memory you'll have for your other Windows apps. I try to avoid playing MODs in Windows, but when I do, I use the Windows Midas MCI which hooks right into Media Player. So in effect, you can play MODs and S3Ms from Media Player or any MCI compliant device. It isn't entirely accurate, the midas player, and S3Ms sometimes crash but the MOD support seems quite stable. At least on my system it's stable. Most importantly, it uses the hardware functions of the GUS which takes the load off the CPU for other tasks and loads the MOD/S3M onto the GUS' DRAM thus freeing Windows' memory for other tasks. Of course, if you registered Mod4Win at that outrageous price, than I guess your stuck with it. > Date: Wed, 4 Jan 1995 17:51:31 WET-DST > From: PAROLINI@eig.unige.ch > Subject: Poor GUS... > > Hello everybody, > I got my GUS since 1 year. It's > horrible. It sounds like the adlib. ;) You mention that price was a criteria for your purchase of a GUS. Now you want to get an AWE32? Obviously your criteria has changed since you believe that even though you pay a lot more, the AWE32 is worth it. Well not everyone can fork out the dough like you can. And even if you were to purchase an AWE32, there are things which factor in which can hinder an AWE32 from performing better than a GUS. Your saying the piano on the AWE32 from the 11MB of compressed samples into 1MB is better than the GUS' uncompressed. Possibly, because of the EMU DSP that Creative has on the card. But obviously I guess you've never tried custom patches. I don't use Gravis' default piano. Having swappable patches is the entire idea behind keeping the sound patches on the hard drive. Also, the patch does not sound like an Adlib. Of course this is subjective, but playing the midi files that came with the GUS does not yield FM performance with Gravis' piano patch. > And with the games ? Now, All the new games are in protected mode, > like sbos or megaem. Then they wont work with the gus emulations... > And naturaly, they don't have a GUS option in its setup. Uhh... Like what? I can only think of one or two games that have come out which don't support the GUS natively. Many games out there may not ship with GUS sound as an option, but there are numerous hacks and fixes to get beautiful GUS sound. All the best and lastest games right now sound great on the GUS with the native support option from the installation menu. Where do you source your information from? WC3, DOOM, Heretic, Descent, UAKM, Relentless, Nascar, Quarantine, Rise of the Triad, NHL Hockey, Creature Shock, and 11th Hour all support GUS with an installation option in the setup menu. Exactly how do you define "All new games"? BTW, SBOS works in protected mode for games that allow it. > > My friends, I'm sorry, but I think that the GUS is dead. > I hoppe that I'm wrong, I hoppe realy. Yes, you are wrong. After downloading the file and reading the simplistic instructions (only difference between SBOS and SBOSMAX when launching is the new one uses a batch called: sboson.bat) he loaded and immeadiatly ran it for Magic Carpet (the game that uses HMI's but had programmers too lazy to actually intialize it) which uses DOS4GW, to his surprise, it worked. To get the best performance with Myst and the GUS, what you really need is a good CD-ROM drive. To get all of the sound effects in Myst, set your buffer size to the max, which I think is 8192. Unfortunately, if you have a slow CD-ROM drive, this will hamper QuickTime for Windows performance. Luckily, I have a quad-speed CD-ROM drive, and I got both good video AND sound. If you don't have a fast CD-ROM drive, I would probably just set the buffer to 8192 anyways, since the game doesn't use much video anyway... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jan 1995 22:55:05 -0800 (PST) From: Thomas Ngo Subject: Poor GUS... not to me. This is for the person talking about the AWE. Fewer game support AWE than the GUS natively. some of the AWE supporters are FIFA soccer and descent. And AWE uses emulations for GM to doesn't it? Oh, very few Mod players support AWE as well. I have to admire(yes) the AWE because of the expandibility of it's ram. It can have more than 1mb. But lets put it this way, if the GUS had more than 1mb, hmm... large more realistic patches! I wonder what the AWE can do with only 1 mb of samples. Probably much worse then the GUS. just my 2 cents. tngo@netcom.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jan 95 17:22:47 EST From: rschutt@pen.k12.va.us (Ryan Andrew Schutt) Subject: Questions 1.) I have a v3.7 gus with 1024k. The music works perfectly, but in the setup program the FX test is just a garble of noise, and in the game it stops and starts, and when it does start sometimes its kinda warbly or garbled. This happens in all sections of the game. Anyone know what gives? Ta much, gussers >>Colin<< ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jan 1995 06:04:53 +0100 From: A.PAUW@elsevier.nl Subject: Windows 3.48 drivers Now somebody asked what the differences were for the new 3.59 disks with the older ones. I can mention one thing for the Windows drivers. The previous two or three drivers in Windows had certain squeeks and buzzes while playing wave files every now and then. The driver version 3.47, the previous one, was said to have dealt with it. Well, the buzzes were less audible but partly still there. The latest one 3.48 didn't gave me any buzz so far (fingers crossed) so anyone having this problem: try the latest drivers. Another thing which still exists is when I play an AVI file (play buffer dma size 768 bytes or so! otherwise it locks up). The WAV sound is too low (the mixer setting is correct). But when I pause and continue the volume is correct. It started with the drivers from disks 3.53 or so. I guess it is my Video for Windows v. 1.1a which need to be upgraded. Other programs don't have this problem. Anyone nows where I can find the latest one? It would be nice if Gravis would give an inventory of what there drivers can do (or are supposed to do), especially the Midi implementation. One other thing: I mailed this to Gravis with no reply and have tried it out on the new Windows drivers. It has to do with the MIDI implementation. My Roland E-16 has a modulation button. If you press it it send the correct controller value stepping up from 0 to 7f. When I release it it only sends a value 0. The reply of the GUS is rather awkward. Stepping upward with the modulation gives vibrato indeed. Releasing the button it stops with vibrato at the point where the frequency is at that particular moment and does NOT fall back to the standard frequency of that note. Now using a modulation wheel (stepping up and down nicely) works perfectly well, but using the button on the E-16 for modulation leaves me with a detuned note. Newsgroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.games,comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.misc,comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.misc Summary: Keywords: Okay I am at my third sound card in the last month... The problems after I a couple sentences of complaints... As an "Amiga"/"3DO"/"Jaguar"/"Unix" involved person I finnally broke down and got a system for WCIII and Unix... I got with my system a Panasonic SOUND16A sound card. It sucked. I do believe that it is a Sound Galaxy 16... I tried the esnoniq/reveal with 1.2 drivers and it was just way too synthee for me. My Panasonic CD-ROM that came with it work well off of it, but the sound was just to synthee.... It was good for 128$ but not that good... So I got a gus max.... In some area it sounds great and I am impressed with it but in others..... Here are my problems... 1) I have no CD-ROM drivers for my panasonic CD-ROM for the GUS it is 2X spin and has the four pin connector for sound). Does gus/panasonic have drivers for "standard" panasonic cd-rom I can get on the net. 2) I need more memory for the GUS Max!(This is more of a local question) Does anybody know a chain store or a normal store in the Twin Cities area that sells the 256Kx16 rams that the GUS (And my video card which needs the same type too) Max these ram chips. I am impatient and would love the instant gradification of being able to buy these chips in a store. 3) While WCIII works well with it, doom II works pretty good, and Descent sounds awesome I am STILL having problems with these games is there any help these are the ones I am having problems with... a) Little Big Adventure (Relentless?)*DEMO*- No music no sound not a beep b) Dark Forces *DEMO* - No sound or music! c) Magic Carpet *DEMO* - No Sound or music! d) Inherit The Earth - CD Edition - Lock up on boot up or Plays two or three notes and then reboot. Yes I am running the Gus bat startup... e) Sam n Max CD - I think people may no this one! f) Theme Park (Floppy version) - Blam Crash no sound just a reboot. And a few more... I have tried sbos, maxsbos, and the rest ARGGGGHHH!!!!! I just want good sound.. Am I just out of luck with this software... Is there a good set of routine for software compatibility for gus max... 4) Is there any good demos or software that really uses the gus max to almost its limits!!! Please tell me where... 5) Will adding memory really improve the sound quality and/or emulation? Some sounds just are not the best that I believe what sounds cards should be offering... Now the question is do I continue with the GUS MAX or get the AWE-32 if I can't clear these problems up. I love sound cards I am having so much fun with them... -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> < Brian.s.Mogged@Uwrf.edu <---------> Kurst@netnet.net > <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V18 #5 ******************************
