I now hear the sounds. But I also found that if you have poor sound quality in the game (snap, crackle and pop when it plays some samples), try modifying your AT BUS Clock selection in the BIOS setup. When I changed it from CLKI/3 to CLKI/4 the effects now seem to be correct. Well, almost :) I still have some crackling in the engine sounds... BTW: this also improves the music in the intro... Now, when I hear the sounds in the game, the on-line manual (cd-version) crashes... And I'd really like to hear the music in the game... it isn't necessary but I'd like to get everything that I paid for... ;) Mikko Issakainen miissaka@silmu.jyu.fi ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jan 95 17:22:36 MST From: rmwalker@nyx10.cs.du.edu (rod walker) Subject: audio CD volume control With reference to my earlier query: >I did this because I thought that I would then be able to control the output >volume of an audio CD in software (using Gravis' Sound Station or CDdb - >the latter is a UK shareware program). However, despite being able to >control the volume of played-back .WAV and .MID files using these programs >I cannot control the volume of played back audio CDs using them. I still >have to use the volume controls on the external speakers - which is a bit >of a pain in the proverbial! Just to say thank you publicly to those who replied with the answer - I have e-mailed them separately. But for anyone else who might have the same problem the answer appears to be that earlier versions of the GUS (and mine is about 2 years old so I suppose it is reasonably old) did not have the mixer chip and as this is sensed automatically by programs such as Sound Station then software control of volume from a CD is a no-no! That's life I suppose Thanks again Rod Walker (rmwalker@nyx.cs.du.edu) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Jan 1995 11:21:36 GMT From: Clarke Brunt Subject: Re: Audio CD volume control >I cannot control the volume of played back audio CDs using them. I am using the very latest drivers (3.47 I >believe or was it 5.47 - no matter they are the latest available) together with >the latest disk set. Early GUS, like mine, cannot control the volume of sound passed through the CD-Audio pins. I believe that later ones (the MAX?) can do so, so the controls in the Mixer will be functional. It is not relevant whether the CD is actually interfaced to a GUS daughter card or whatever. All this does is save you a slot in the PC - it does not give any more functionality. I think that some CD drives themselves might support software control over the volume of audio-out (there are sliders in some player software), but again mine (a Tosh 4101) doesn't. -- Clarke Brunt (CCB), Principal Software Engineer, Laser-Scan Ltd, Science Park, Milton Rd, CAMBRIDGE, CB4 4FY, England. Anyone know were I can get one for this drive for my GUS? thanks, eric ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jan 95 16:23:19 PST From: "Brian Hayes, Sierra Systems" Subject: Game Review--Hardball 4 In the event to further improve the digest, I here submit another gus/game review for those interested... Title: Hardball 4 By: Accolade Media: 3.5 Disk (5 of them, plus another 5 for the MLBPA add-on) Rating: 9/10 Sound: Native GUS and GUS Max. Wow. I wouldn't have thought that HB4 could be this good, but I was wrong. Now in SVGA, the game looks like your watching it on TV. Graphics are very good-- right down to the pitcher nervously rotating the ball in his hand while Carter waits for the sign :-) Sound is fantastic and native for us gussers. 16bit stereo HMI drivers. The game play is about the same as earlier Hardballs, with a few better points. It is still more of an 'arcade' type baseball game, leaving most of the stats out. Very fun to play. What makes it different, is the commentary. The game takes 10meg, and the players disks take 12. Every player who comes to bat gets his name said via Al Micheals commentary. All plays are called correctly for a change, and the players names are used (instead of "picked up by the second baseman", Al says "picked up by Alomar, throws to Olerud for the out". MIDI organ music adds to that 'at the park' feel. Another great sounding game for the GUS! cheers, Brian Hayes Health: (604) 952-1834 Ministry of health, Client Registry Internet: BAHAYES@BCSC02.GOV.BC.CA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jan 95 17:37:29 MST From: rmwalker@nyx10.cs.du.edu (rod walker) Subject: GUS 359 disks Well I've looked on epas and orst and I can't find the v3.59 disks. The Gravis Ultrasound Experience CD had quite alot of stuff, but not all of the archives. Something like the Walnut Creek, or CICA CDs would be cool. First some configuration information: Hardware: 386DX - 33 4 Meg RAM GUS v2.4 Software: Disk set v3.57 Windows driver v5.47 DOS v6.2 Windows v3.1 12 Meg permanent swap file set ULTRASND=220,5,5,11,5 Problem 1: AVI files are not playing sound correctly. I have changed my playback and record buffer size to 512. I open the Mixer and unchecked the Lock L/R box. Still when I start a video for Windows (v1.1a) the sound is silent. If I pause and immediately start again the sound is fine. Any suggestions??? Problem 2: Getting King's Quest 7 to run on my system (I know, it not the most powerful system, but it does meet the minimum hardware requirements stated on the KQ7 box). The KQ7 version is 1.51 on CD ROM. I have ran the hardware tests supplied with KQ7 and all have passed. However, when launching KQ7, it complains of not enough memory. The memory test reports I have ~10 Meg of memory (must be looking at my permanent swap file) and KQ7 requires ~3 Meg (in theory, no problem). I have removed smartdrv as suggested by the readme files, and get "~500K more memory required". Doing a mem command from DOS (exiting out of Windows), I have 3411 K free reported. As some one suggested, I copied sierraw.exe from the CD ROM to my sierra\kq7 directory and changed the icon to point to this executeable instead of the sierraws.exe. Although this helps, I still get "30K more memory required". I have stripped my autoexec.bat and config.sys as far as I think I can, here they are: config.sys: DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.exe noems highscan FILES=30 BUFFERS=20 DOS=UMB LASTDRIVE=H (yes, I have this many drives with the CD being H:) DOS=HIGH STACKS=9,256 DEVICEHIGH \SONY_CD\SLCD.SYS /D:SONY_000 /B:340 /M:P /V /C ?K autoexec.bat: LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:SONY_000 /L:h /v /M:1 SET COMSPEC=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM SET GUSMOD=C:\ULTRASND\MOD @ECHO OFF PROMPT $p$g PATH C:\DOS;C:\WIND;C:\MOUSE;C:\BIN (...ETC...) Hello all, Ive got a strange problem with rise of the triad: when I try to setup both fx *and* music, sndsetup dumps me straight back to dos with an irritating message saying that ive got too little gus memory. I can, however, use fx or music, but not both. The readme file doesnt say that I need 1mb, so I thought a gusmax with 512kb would be good enough. Looks like apogee still cant handle a gus(max). Any suggestions are welcome (not that important, the music sux anyways). l8r, Justus ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Jan 1995 23:56:41 -0800 (PST) From: Sky Woo Subject: Ultrasound ACE UltraSound ACE.
