I indicated that for Windows MOD/S3M playing I use the Midas Module Player which is an MCI extension. After I said this in the digest, several people e-mailed me asking me where it is. I replied to the first few with a very generic response. I got sick of writing the same message over and over again. So to avoid it any further, I'm just gonna post to the digest. To find the Midas Player, look on archive.epas.utoronto.ca under /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit. The exact filename I believe is "wmidas.zip". I am in no way connected to the author of this program except that I use it, so stop e-mailing me. There were some others who e-mailed me asking where the Midas player was and never replied. I apologize for this but I'm sure this digest post will surfice. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jan 95 17:32:03 +0100 From: d91-sme@nada.kth.se Subject: CD-audio cable between Mitsumi 4Xspin and GUS? I have recently purchased a Mitsumi 4XSpin (a IDE CD-ROM), and found that the audio cable that was in the package didn't fit into the connector on my GUS. Where can I get a good cable? Or how can I build a cable of my own (not preferred)? /Smedis (Niklas Smedberg, d91-sme@nada.kth.se) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jan 1995 01:25:38 -0800 (PST) From: Francois Dion Subject: Crystal Semiconductor Dans la Matrice, (Martijn de Jong) a dit: >Many nonsense about the Crystal Codec lately. Here's a bit >more... I didn't say it, you did... :) > The CODEC-chip (Actually it is a Chrystal Semiconductor > CS4231) is the most standard chip on most nowadays For a good reason: it is compatible in everyway to the AD1848 and has lots more features that the Analog device codec (found on MS Sound system and compatible cards, and cards with the AD2115 DSP). The 4231 can be found on the Max, the 16 bit daughterboard, the Mediatrix Audiotrix Pro, the IBM MWave and surely others. > soundcards. On the GusMAX it is to my astonishment only used > as an ADC Be astonished, cause it's not the case. > The output still went through a separate > DA-convertor (Philips AD1545) Pretty good DAC still. Almost at par with the CS4330 (minus deemphasis). In any case this is used for the GF1 digital output to be converted to analog (the midi synth), while the cs4231 is used for wav playback and record. > inexpensive chip, so only using it for the 16bit recording > is a bit strange I think. I don't have the data sheets of > the chips at hand (I do have them at home) but I guess the > decompressor part has some kind of intelligence. I guess > it's this part Gravis uses for their MAXSBOS. Unfortunately it isn't. Why the maxsbos is only for the max is because they use the CS4231 for the sb digital audio playback. They may have added something else however to help them emulate a SB but that would be pure speculation for me to say... Rod Walker ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jan 95 15:08:22 PST From: "Ferdinand Mataragnon" Subject: GUS picking up noise Hello. I have a v3.7 GUS. I recently upgraded from the Labtec speakers I got with my SB multimedia kit. I was previously sending the output from the GUS to the SB16 and then the SB16 goes to the speakers. I'm now using Altec Lansing speakers (they're awesome!) and I just mix the output from the SB16 and GUS. The problem is, with the new speakers, I can hear computer noise if I have the Output set to Enabled in the GUS mixer program. I can hear the harddrive, I can hear the noise when I reboot, etc. Plus, when I don't have Norton Speedcache loaded, there seems to be less noise (weird). But there is still noise. Is there a way to shield the GUS some more or fix this? Also, I don't know what the Output setting in the GUS mixer program controls. I have it currently set to Disable so I don't hear any noise but I can still play midi's, games, etc with sound coming out. This is with Output set to disabled. Not really a problem (I think) but just curious. BTW, upon further checking, noise was being picked up when I was still using the old speakers .... I just couldn't hear the noise because of the low output compared to the Altec Lansing speakers. It might also be filtered somewhat because the output was going through the SB16 first. I've tried moving the GUS to other slots farther away from the hard drive but it's still picking up noise. The SB16 doesn't pickup any. Defective GUS? Timo Hietikko ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jan 1995 12:37:37 -0800 (PST) From: "Christopher A. Johnson" Subject: KQ7 Memory Problem. I had the same problem. I fixed it by creating an AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS based on a disk make by the Sierra Boot Disk maker. It surprsied me because it didn't load EMM386 at all, only HIMEM.SYS, and didn't load anything high. Since it's a Windows game, I just assume it doesn't care about conventional memory. But it did work. However, the bad news is that it runs VERY slow. I have a 386-40 Mhz with 4 Meg RAM. With an extra 4 Meg of RAM, though, it speeds up tremendously (I have access to 8 Meg on weekends!). So try making a boot disk and see what happens. You'll have to modify AUTOEXEC and CONFIG, though... it tried to set mine up as a SoundBlaster. First some configuration information: [stuff deleted] Don't have KQ7 but since all you need is some help freeing up memory maybe I can help. > DOS=UMB > LASTDRIVE=H (yes, I have this many drives with the CD being H:) > DOS=HIGH > STACKS=9,256 Probably won't do much, but put the two lines, DOS=UMB & DOS=HIGH together to make DOS=HIGH,UMB. As for LASTDRIVE=H, do you really use the extra 3 drives (F, G, H) since these extra drives take up space. If possible, try to get all the drives you need to play KQ7 under drive E and lower. As for STACKS=9,256, reducing this will help save memory. Finally, if possible reduce the number of environment variables and reduce its size. Environment variables not specifically used for KQ7 should be removed (make a KQ7 selection upon bootup) such as the GUSMOD variable and trim down your PATH. How can I get GUS sound with Front Page Sports Baseball and Football '95? I can't get sound no nmatter what I do. With sbos or megaem, it eventually locks up the machine. Oh, and does anyone know how to get these games to simulate in the backgroud in os/2 warp? I selected the background selection, but it doesn't work in the background, it just sits there.
