My system do not play=20 sound correctly (short 0.05 sek) blocks are playing, next long silence, sometimes video stop too and sometimes video plays very slow (my machine is 486dx-66 EISA/SCSI and VESA Video with 32MEG RAM). This problem I have since ver 3.11 of GUS drivers. May be it is my machine is stupid (and me too) - but GUS=B1D drivers are GOOD! Any sugestions? P.S. THANKS to JASON WAGHORN (ts0jwa@orac.sund.ac.uk) for HELP! I've often wondered, with these clock doubled processors, does CLK/4 mean 16MHz, or does it mean 8MHz? I always assumed the latter. I have a DX2/50, with AT BUS CLK set to CLK/3, assuming that this is near to 8MHz. I'd want nearer CLK/6 to arrive at 8MHz if you are supposed to count the doubled speed. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jan 1995 19:57:57 +0000 (GMT) From: "John Dudley" Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V18 #10 > > Date: Wed, 11 Jan 95 10:28:57 EST > From: jday@bank-banque-canada.ca (Jim Day) > Subject: 562b driver switches > > Hello, > I just purchased a Gravis UltraSound Max. > I also have a Panasonic 562b CD-ROM drive. > The driver that comes with the drive is cdmke.sys. > I have setup (removed jumpers and connected interface > cable and sound cable) the GUS Max for the Panasonic drive. > > Can you tell me what switches on the cdmke.sys driver will > work with the GUS Max? > > I previously had the drive on its propietory interface card > with the following: > > devicehigh=c:\batch\cdmke.sys /d:mscd001 /P:300 /A:0 /T:5 /I:10 > > I left the default 340h address on the Max. > > The documentation with the Panasonic drive is terrible. > I'm sure other users have this same sound card / CD-ROM > combo. > Anything to get me up and running would be appreciated. > > Jim Day > Ottawa, ON > jday@bank-banque-canada.ca > The first thing you have to do is make sure that all the jumpers are set up correctly on the MAX. Remove JP10,JP11,JP12 and install JP6. Try this in your config.sys. device= /D:MSCD001 /P:340 This should get the drive up and running. Don't forget to set up MSCDEX in your autoexec.bat. If you need I will give you a list and explaination of all the cdmke.sys options. If this doesn't work mail me at the address below and give me details of your config.sys and autoexec.bat and I will try to sort it out. I bought it in jan-feb of 1992 and it has served me well this far. But, when doom2 came it didn't quite work as well as with doom. The F/X are distorted (sounds like krsssh) and I first thought it was something wrong with my settings but I've tried all kinds of settings, no change. And when I tried doom2 awhile agoo I got the same dirstortion and the same goes for heretic... I have a p90 Intel m/b and an ati graphics ultra (pci). The GUS is equiped with 1MB... first I though some of the mem on the board was falty but, the sound didn't change when I ripped out the memory I've added to it. If anyone has had the same problem, please tell me, or if anyone have a good advice of what to do tell me. I just hope the board is ok (I mean, doom/MODs play just fine) Hans Bruman ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 00:14:42 -0500 From: JeffOw@aol.com Subject: Mitsumi 4x Still haven't gotten around to buying a CD Rom drive. I've seen the Mitsumi 4x for what? $200-$300 or something. Should this be the one to buy at this time. Basically looking for something decent to play games, and that won't be obsolete by next year. My Amptron DX-6800G (SiS 85C461 chipset, SiS 82C207 peripheral controller) doesn't support NMI. Most 486 85C471 motherboards don't support NMI either, and the SiS471 chipset is probably one of the best among the lower-priced non-name brand motherboards. Now there may be other reasons that justify your statement, but the NMI issue shouldn't be your only justification. I belive many PCI motherboards lack NMI, and I wouldn't call them lame just because they lack the NMI procedure. Anyway, interestingly, my old ISA/486 85C401 worked just fine with NMI. Wonder why everyone stopped implementing it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jan 1995 22:37:44 -0800 (PST) From: Francois Dion Subject: MPEG layer 2 > From: ping@cais.dsm.sp-agency.ca (Ka-Ping Yee) > Subject: MPEG Layer 2 > > I'm starting to see some files with extension .MP2 around, and it sounds > like these are "MPEG Layer 2" files. Do these contain just audio, or > both audio and video? Where can i find an MPEG-2 decompressor or player? These are MPEG 1 layer 2, not MPEG 2. MPEG 2 is broadcast quality encoding demanding huge bandwidth, with HDTV in mind. The layer 2 refers to medium bit rates. Layer 3 is for low bit rates (under 64kbits/sec) but encoding/decoding on even pentium machines take forever. As for where to find encoders/decoders, on hyperreal.com (by ftp), you will find these in /music/tools if i'm not mistaken. By www: http://www.hyperreal.com:70/1/tools. As for my gusppg6.mp2 file i posted about 2 issues ago, it moved (well the whole emulations directory moved) to /music/machines/sounds/emulations/gusppg6.mp2 (by www, http://www.hyperreal.com:80/music/machines). An update on the project can be found there also as gusmodular_draft.txt (yes, i'm going over board doing a modular synth with a GUS... If ya want a part of the action, better get in touch fast...) If you want to access other mpeg files, browse around hyperreal, there are already a bunch in the /music/artists directories (including mine). Check also in /music/labels (in orbitrecords for example). All of ya> On the Jaleo story... i would doubt very very much that Cornel Huth would have camouflaged his software under 359. This is just not like him. As for accusing him of not supporting the GUS, this is a bit ridiculous as he is the only one up to now to have done a midi player from scratch that supports the GUS. I've done a drum machine, and i know it's not trivial at all. Just before those points of light are supposed to show up on the Sierra name with the "ting" sound, the game crashes with the last note playing continuously and the following error: DOS/4GW Professional error (2001): exception 0Dh (general protection fault) at 170:0016ED9E TSF32: prev_tsf32 626C ..
