In a past message someone said that they had a problem with DOOM 2 working on their GUS. And also Heritic i think. Those problems are not a problem with you GUS, just a problem with DOOM operating system v.1.666. Which (i believe) is used in both DOOM 2 and HEritic. The simple way to fix it is to run the game with a command line pramater of -GUS1 or -GUS2 . Unfortunatly, no one came up with any intelligent answers, but after contacting Peter Gannon at PG MUSIC, here is the scoop. Band-in-a-Box has always worked with the GUS but it didn't support sample caching. The latest windows version advertised is 6.0. BUT, you need 6.3 which supports the sample caching. So the bottom line is that if you get Band-in-a-Box for Windows Version _6.3_, you will love it as much as I do. I've tried the manley drivers (v0.6e) and also the alpha drivers from Gravis, and still n'thing. Is it because I have 2 soundcards in my PC???? If I start OS\2 WITHOUT starting DOS first and then reset, Os\2 doesn't "see" MY sbPro comp. What is the cause of all this trouble??? Message-ID: <9501152245.aa05178@kilauea.sco.com> I noticed that the Capricorn motherboard using the Nexgen Nx586-90 recently became available for much less than a Pentium 90. It's got an ISA and VL bus. Has anyone used one of these successfully with a GUS board? If you have, I'd also be interested in your general impressions of the board and whether it's worth the risk of going with bleeding-edge technology. Will I be > able to play Audio CDs from a CDRom not connected to my sound card? To my > understanding, I cannot connect a SCSI drive to the sound card.(?) It will work fine. The GUS plays little or no part in playing Audio CDs. The player program (e.g. Media Player in Windows, or various DOS utilities) just tells the CD player to start playing, which it will then do with no further intervention - of course the software may want to keep tabs on the current position of the disk, so as to display time remaining etc. While playing, the CD drive is sending an audio signal out via the headphone socket on the front, and via an audio connector at the back. If you want to route the sound via the GUS, so that it emerges from the GUS line/amplified out, then you connect the CD audio out pins to the CD audio in pins on the GUS. Getting the right cable can be difficult - you need four wires at the GUS end (LGGR), and either 4 or 3 at the CD end. You would still need this arrangement even if the CD drive was driven via an interface on the GUS, or a daughtercard. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jan 1995 12:15:52 +0100 From: Jens-Uwe.Jansen@Germany.EU.net Subject: Re: Play AudioCD from CDRom not directly connected to GUS Max Hello Sylvester, > I've recently purchased the Ultrasound Max card and so I'm new to > this digest. If you mean to play the CD output trough the GUS the answer is YES. You just have to find a cable to connect the line-out of the CD-Rom with the CD-in on your GUS. Thats all.. ;-) All the controll commands are sent trough the SCSI Bus and the audio output is independent of that. If you buy an external CD-Rom, because you don't have any more free space in your super mini baby desktop case ;-), it gets a bit tricky. In that case it's better just to hook the CD-Rom to your stereo (or BoomBox or whatever you call it....), because external drives normally have standard chinch plugs. If everything fails for you, just plug a head-set into the drive ;-) > I am new to both sound cards and CDRoms so please excuse my > ignorance.
