Has such a program been developed yet? Thanks. I wrote just such a program a while back, for a project I never completed. Anyhow, it plays sound from the CD in 16 bit stereo at 22Khz, 44.1Khz or 88.2Khz, depending on the speed of the drive of course. The sound is not particularly good since it clicks and skips. This is because I don't know how to write a double- buffered clickfree playback routine like the one in playfile. Any masochists want to nick my (awful) source code and fix it up? Email me if you do. Thanks. > > -Peter > For the people that missed the music-digest here it is again: Subject: PLAYING CDROM AUDIO DIGITAL THROUGH GUS About the last discussion about CDROM audio. I have made a program which reads CDROM audio data through the MSCDEX interface. (CDINFO) For some time I am working at a program which reads (in real time) CD audio into memory & plays it on the GUS. Just as Klaas Hemstra mentioned you can be able to do nice tricks: * SCRATCH with your CDROM (working on it) * Play BACKWARDS!! * Play as slow/quick as the device can handle. The program is in VERY-alpha-state.. so I do not know if I get all of these tricks done. But anyone who has suggestion, please write. (hpverwei@cs.ruu.nl) Here's some extra info about CDINFO.. CDINFO can read some drives which are hooked up using SCSI (hardware) and have an interface with DOS through MSCDEX (software). But the program was made for drives which have only the MSCDEX interface. (Non-SCSI) Beware of some facts: * Some CDROMs do not have the capability to READ RAW AUDIO!! (Due to copyright issues) * Many CD AUDIO GRABBERS DO NOT SYNCHRONIZE THE SOUND DATA. Resulting in skips & pops during play. Also the frequency is not quite right! - CDINFO has a synchronize-scheme allowing you to read the sound data in superior quality. AUTHOR: DICK VERWEIJ internet email: hpverwei@cs.ruu.nl Main purpose is to download CD digital audio data straight from your cdrom to your harddisk. Without any sampling errors/hiss/destortion. (vincent@orsay.icdc.fr). The GUS is not recognized because Gravis' OS/2 drivers are still in testing. Warp's install only detects hardware for which it has drivers (of course). I'm surprised the Stealth 64 isn't found, though. I don't recall whether the drivers ship with Warp, but I'd think it would find some sort of S3. In any case, without true Plug-and-Play, no autodetect is going to get everything. Just install with VGA and no sound for starters. Once you get drivers, use Selective Install to change your video display and Multimedia Install to add the GUS drivers. Both drivers should be on ftp-os2.cdrom.com. You can also get the Gravis alpha drivers from their BBS. Don't know about Diamond, though you could just call their tech support line. I've got a Ultrasound Max (fitted with 1024k ram) and I'm having a strange problem playing midi files both in DOS and Windows. Basicly...... the Gravis is installed and working, MOD files, game music / FX and WAV files play fine. MIDI tracks load ok, but when played all the voices sound damaged and distorted (with lots of white noise and junk in each instrument on playback). As mentioned earlier, this happens when using both the DOS and Windows MIDI software that comes with the MAX. Thinking that the .pat voice files might be corrupt I re-installed the software with no luck in solving the problem. To check the integrity of the supplied disks I pulled down a few libraries of PD voices via FTP from one of the Gravis archive sites, still no luck (voices still sound corrupt). But here's the wierd thing..... If I take a WAV file and put it through Patchmaker LITE converting it to a .pat it plays as a MIDI instrument in the supplied software perfectly, no distortion - just pure sound (the way those nice people at Advanced Gravis intended.... :) ). The problems really got me stumped and I don't think I can face the prospect of having to create all my own instruments. So if you can help me, please get in touch (personal e-mail would be best - hardware settings available on request). Thanx in advance....... Alan. Smoke me a kipper!...
