HELP! -- Clint Redwood ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 22:33:36 +0100 From: marcelwi@xs4all.nl (Marcel Wilders) Subject: GUS-MAX parity error Recently I bought the GUS-MAX with drivers v3.53. After inserting the card in a free slot I tried to install the drivers from the DOS-prompt. After answering the question in which directory the files have to be installed, and choosing the customize option I get the failure message: off board parity error addr (Hex)=(0000:0002) system halted After this message the system is hanged and I have to restart. I can't figure out what the problem could be, even after reading the FAQ-list. In case this is relevant information, some data of my hardware; * PC-AT 486DX 33VLB * CD-ROM Mitshumi double speed with own interface card (FX001D) DMA 5, IRQ 10 * Primax handscanner: DMA 3, IRQ 5 * COM 1 (mouse) on IRQ 4, COM 2 (modem) on IRQ 3 * Floppydrive on DMA 2 By the way, I was intending to set the GUS-MAX on DMA 1; Ultrasound IRQ at 11 and Soundblaster/MIDI IRQ at 7. My last question is how to figure out whether base port address 220 is free? The term base port address doesn't appear in my DOS-handbook. PCTools (version 8) only gives information on HEX-addresses (hardware and software interrupts) which are given like this: 0481:00CF. Maybe these are very silly question, but I hope someone can help me out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marcel Wilders Netherlands Trade Union Confederation FNV Dept Occupational Health & Safety / E-mail: marcelwi@xs4all.nl P.O. I'm considering strongly to getting a Gus Max. Thing is, I've never seen any Gravis card on sale anywhere here, and dont know how much it costs. Is a Max worth it? How much, and where do I find this beast? Final question- I'd like to either use the Gus Max and emulate the SB/Sb16 for dos games, but I've no idea what SBOS et al do or how they work. Would I be better off just adding a SB 16 to my system in addition to the MAX? Will the 2 cards co-exist well? (Or a SB/Sbpro instead) I appreciate any help I can get. I have been unable to get anything at all out of the demo version of the game. I have a GUSMAX, and it is not supported (although I have yet to try maxsbos, once my other probem is solved). I also put in my OLD ATI Stereo F/X card (8 bit SB compatible) and could not get the game to run even selecting SB or SB Compatible. I have the blaster variable set correctly, at a240 i7 d1 t1 for the ati. I can't even get into the game, as it locks after the initial setup screen. Any idea if certain setups (ie mem managers, smartdrv etc) conflict with MC? Also, does anybody know how to get ROTT to work with a 512k GUS? When I select GUS for music, it says "no more mem on GUS" (in so many words). If I select GUS for sfx, and no music card selected, it still tries to load the patches, and I get a few random notes and then no sound at all (same as if i had selected the GUS for music AND sfx). I use the ATI with that game, and even on FM the soudtrak sounds bloody awesome (absolutely NO reference to CL's new joke, the AWE32). Ah well, 8 bit sound and FM beats no sound at all, but I sure would like a fix (for the game, not the vein! :-) Cheers, AC /---------------------------------------------------------------------------\ | *** ***** WELCOME TO MY WORLD! | | ***** *********** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | | ** ** ***** *** It's really not that bad... | | *** *** **** once you get used to it! | | *********** **** | | ************* ***** *** ---------> Aaron Cameron <--------- | | **** **** *********** Memorial University of Newfoundland | | ***** ***** ***** ---> acameron@europa.cs.mun.ca <--- | \---------------------------------------------------------------------------/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 21:20:14 -0800 (PST) From: Thomas Ngo Subject: Marcato.pat yet again :) Though all strings are being played for a marcato.pat, on some instruments, notes just can't get that high... like the bass compared to the violin. a bass has a limit to how high it can be played(an vice versa). SO... some sounds that are at higher octaves will be played by only the instruments like the violin and the viola. The opposite goes for the cellos and basses. And thus the sounds will be closer to one side; not to the full extent of right or left, mind you.(because then the music will sound fake. e.g. some mod players do that. :( ). It keeps locking up because of a shared driver/(something else) problem. I do not know what is causing it of course, and I'm not too good with computers so I don't know how to find out. My system is a 486 with 386MAX, and kstack running, could this be part of the problem? Thanks for any help. My problem is, taht when I go to play any QT movies off the CD-Rom I get about 5 seconds of great sound and then it gets choppy, words are repeated or skipped or broken. When played off the HD everything is fine. It's not like my quad spin is having to try all that hard, the light barly go's on! The Star Trek the Next Generation Tech Manual skips all over too (It uses QT 2.0) and it caused the Gus driver to GPF. What's up? I don't think it's an IRQ prob, I've tryed changing them, no better OH, and a particualer CD Disk player prog I have plays a song, then gives a media error, check media device and go's on to the next song fine. Does this for every other song. Any suggestion would be great. Thankes. You, and only You, are responsable for your choices. Choose wisely, for choosing now may prevent you from choosing later. They should call the driver SBOS/2. You could use my driver instead of Gravis' which provides MegaEm like MIDI emulation to DOS/Win sessions. Not only does it work on all those old games which don't support the GUS, but also all those new fangled protect-mode didies that just blindly ignore the marketplace. Oh, and if that weren't enough, you also get music from your WinOS2 sessions! You can ftp ultra06d.zip from hobbes.nmsu.edu. Look in directory os2/32bit/incoming. Note that only registered users get the above functionality without requiring an external synth. On a side note, registered users also get my new joystick driver for OS/2 FREE! :) Registration can now be done either through mail or through the CIS shareware registration service - search for filename gus06.zip. Hiya Roy, I'm running '95 here with a GUS MAX and most things are mostly fine, the GUS mixer won't load, but you can control volume with the supplied '95 mixer. You'll continue to get all the pings'n'stuff, and smallish games like Jazz/Heretic/Pinball etc work fine from inside windows (full sound :) ). Some games (like Heretic), freeze up if you have sound selected - but you can kill them with the three finger salute (which brings up a "Killer Window"). If you play them without sound they work fine - even in a window!!! All the supplied programs (GUSMOD, Midi Session) work fine too... The only weird things I've noticed are : o The Microsoft Mixer always starts off with the balance over to the left, so it has to be adjusted. o The volume always starts off at full volume, it should remember the levels you last set. o If you adjust the volume of the wave output, you lose it! o MODUS seems to use 100% CPU time, while programs like MidiSoft Session only use 15% (doing nothing), 30-40% (Playing minimised) to 50-60% when maximised. This surprised me - I always thought one of the good things about MODUS was that it did'nt use many cycles... This is no problem though, you can still multi-task, it just surprised me (I was playing about with the System Monitor). The drivers are 16 bit, so I hope gravis are re-compiling/tweaking them for 32, but I was pretty impressed :)))) - I've sent EMail to AG at their AOL address about this, hope they reply. The one thing you need to look out for is playing a game like Pinball inside windows with full sound, exiting, and starting a windows program that uses sound - somethimes screws up - probably not resetting the board or something... I installed Win'95 from scratch after wipeing(sp?) Win 3.11, when '95 boots you get a "Starting Windows '95..." - press F8 to get a menu and select "Start command prompt only...". This gives you a console screen that looks like DOS. Install your GUS stuff from here. When you next start Windows, you'll get the familar "Welcome new GUS user..." stuff, but instead of creating icons in your progman group, it creates a new sub-menu in your "Start"/"Programs" button! So go for it Roy, you won't lose *anything*, games + demos like Dark Forces will all continue to work, and if like me you run your GUS through an external amp, you won't be using the mixer for wave volume anyway... :> By the way, does *anyone* know where to get the beta MAXSBOS, I've tried all the mirror sites with no joy :( I can get Dark Forces with crappy sound after a clean boot and "sbos -o4", but I'd like to play it again with *proper" sound, not soundblaster farts and squeeks ;) Cheers then, // tbone@home in Ireland ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V18 #24 *******************************
