Is there anything I can tweek to improve this? I have always noticed that about 10% of notes are not played whenever I play a MIDI song. Does everyone just not worry about this or are you getting better results? I am using the latest 3.59 drivers, and I got similar results with all the older drivers too. Recently, I replaced a few of the Gravis patches (3.59) with some ProPat3 ones. Now I notice for the replaced instruments, about 20% of the notes (!) are not played. The original instruments still sound like about 10% notes missing. This is real noticable because I replaced a few of the drum patches and what should be a steady repeating beat becomes a weird sounding beat with 20% of the notes missing. Can anyone explain this behavior? If a solution has already been discussed, please direct me to the appropriate digest number. Now, can the two sets of > drivers work together and what values do I need to set to turn on line-in > in the SBPro2. I too have a GUS (Max) and an SBPro in my system, and I have both of them working together under OS/2 Warp. The way I did this was to install the SBPro drivers when I installed OS/2, and then added the Gravis Alpha drivers after. Two sets of MIDI players/WAV players/etc. were created in my MMOS folder, one for each sound card. The values for my cards are :- SBPro : IO 220, INT 5, DMA 1 GUS Max : IO 240, INT 7, DMA 6 & 7 On another point, has anyone used the new Ultrinit supplied in GUS0045.ZIP ???? Is it the same as the one on DISK 3.59 ??? I installed it over the weekend and it seems to work fine for me, it even seems to have fixed the problem I had (and reported) of the GUS seeming to locking out my SBPro within Magic Carpet (except if I payed a sample out of the GUS using PLAYFILE, before I loaded the game). I tried to solve my problems with the GUSMAX by reading the FAQ-list, approaching the shop where I bought the Gravis Ultrasound MAX soundcard (512K) and sending E-mail to this listserver before. So far without sufficient results. So I hope very very much if somebody can solve my problem with installing the GUSMAX soundcard. Recently I bought the GUS-MAX with drivers v3.53. After inserting the card in a free slot I tried to install the drivers from the DOS-prompt. After answering the question in which directory the files have to be installed, and choosing the customize option I get the failure message: off board parity error addr (Hex)=(0000:0002) system halted After this message the system is hanged and I have to restart. I coudln't figure out what the problem is. After looking for the latest drivers, I downloaded the new drivers V359 (6 disks). I tried again to install the drivers (V3.59) form the DOS-prompt, after removing the TSR's with the command "kill". I got the message that the current setup parameters are: GUS Base Address: 220 Playback DMA: 1 Record DMA: 1 Soundblaster DMA: 1 Ultrasound IRQ: 11 Soundblaster/MIDI IRQ: 5 Since I have a Primax Handscanner which is set at DMA 3 and IRQ 5 (other IRQ option is 3, but IRQ 3 is used by COM2), I changed the Soundblaster/MIDI IRQ to 2. With the option "test" in the installation menu, the screen got black again with the message: off board parity error address (Hex)=(0000:0002) system halted I had to reset the machine. I went on. I disabled "Memory Parity Error Check", which was advised to me by somebody. I followed the above procedure again with Soundblaster/MIDI IRQ set at 5 and next at 2. With the test option in the customize menu, this time I (both settings) did not get a black screen but the message: Testing Soundblaster selections............Failed. SBOS vector not functional When I tried to diagnose this message from the advanced setup menu I got the following messages (also with both settings): Check I/O Address: Passed Check SBOS Mode: Busy (read) Check DMA Channel: Busy (read) Check DRAM: Passed 512 Kb Check Ultrasound IRQ: Ultra IRQ Timeout Check SB/MIDI IRQ: SB/MIDI IRQ Timeout (when IRQ was set to 5) SB/MIDI IRQ Passed (when IRQ was set to 2) Neither the User Guide nor the FAQ gives me any que how to interprete these messages and how to slove the problems. I checked all my hardware to see wether base port address 220 was occupied, but this seems not to be the case. Neither did some hardware seem to occupie an address with x2x. Maybe it is a very simple problem (which I hope) but after severeal weeks of trying and thinking I don't know any more what to do. I would be very gratefull if you can solve this installation problem. Because you will need data on my configuration I listed them below. * PC-AT 486DX 33VLB * COM 2 (modem) (address 02F8): IRQ 3 * COM 1 (mouse) (address 03F8): IRQ 4 * Primax handscanner (address 280H): DMA 3, IRQ 5 * Floppydrive: DMA 2, IRQ 6 * LPT1: IRQ 7 * Internal clock: IRQ 8 * Redirect IRQ 2: IRQ 9 * CD-ROM Mitsumi double speed and own interface card (FX001D) DMA 5, IRQ 10 This CD-ROM uses address 300H * Math coprosessor: IRQ 13 * Harddisk (Conner IDE 251 Mb) (address 1F0-1F7H & 3F6-3F7H): IRQ 14 * Timer: IRQ 0 * Keyboard: IRQ 1 The jumpers at the GUSMAX are set as following ( | means jumper set/closed, : means jumper removed/open): Jp 1 4 closed | 5 open : 6 closed | 7 closed | Jp 3 CD-ROM disable: closed (disabled) Jp 4 Sound Sony: open : Jp 5 Sound Panasonic: open : Jp 6 Panasonic: open : Jp 10 CDROM DACK 0 open : 1 open : 3 closed | Jp 11 CDROM DRQ 0 closed | 1 open : 3 open : Jp 12 CDROM IRQ 3 open : 10 open : 11 closed | 5 open : 9 (2) open : Jp 13 CDROM Address 1 closed | 2 open : In the Users Guide there is a note that Ultrasound does not support the DMA channels (5, 6 and 7) required for double-speed Mitsumi drives. This note puzzles me, because my Mitsumi CDROM, connected to its own interface card, is set at DMA 5. My questions are: can I leave the CD-ROM drive connected to its own interface card at DMA 5? Is it better to connect the data-cable of the CD-ROM drive to the special Mitsumi interface at the GUSMAX? Should I connect the CD-audio-cable of the CD-ROM to the GUSMAX (Jp 2) or the interface card of the CD-ROM drive? Is there no problem in disabeling the Memory Parity Error Check in the CMOS? I would be very gratefull if somebody can help me out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marcel Wilders Netherlands Trade Union Confederation FNV Dept Occupational Health & Safety / E-mail: marcelwi@xs4all.nl P.O. It appears that my card doesn't seem to be initialised correctly when the system boots. However, I didn't change anything to my setup when I installed the new disks, and in my config.sys, the 'device=ultrinit.sys' still points to the correct file. Mod players and games have no problem though, so I wonder what has changed with the new install disks? Also, I noticed that the E.BAT always says 'no card installed', but this seems to be due to some differences between novell dos 7 (which I use), and normal MSDOS. Regular SBOS works fine (e.g. I get music+digital efx in Body Blows, Unreal demo), whereas MAXSBOS chokes on digital sound! I also get NMI not present errors with MAXSBOS, which is strange because regular SBOS works fine. My GUS MAX setting is 240h, GF1 irq 11, midi irq 7, playback dma 7, record dma 6. It is plugged into a VESA motherboard with a DX2-66 processor and 16 megs ram (it that info will help). I also have a Promise 2300+ eide controller installed. Also, I noticed a very serious problem when recording under Windows 3.1! When I try to record in 16bit mono at 48000khz, very nasty sounding shrieks and screeches are recorded. BTW the reason that ultrinit has grown in size is because it now reads the ultramix.ini file and sets line levels accordingly, disabling/enabling anything that needs to be so you don't have to set them yourself. The GUS0045.ZIP file also includes a graphical mixer for DOS. This patch was made because of the problems with wfw3.11.
