From what I hear, there's probably not much point but I'd like to register it anyway (never know what special offers might turn up). However, there doesnt seem to be much point in registering it in the states so I was wondering if anyone could tell me an address in the UK that I could send my registration to. Cheers. This card looks like it can easily replace the GUS...effects and more RAM.. Looks like we'll lose the Focal Point (hmmm not 100% compatible with all GUS applications) But so far, I've only heard of two games that use this effect processor. To me Focal Point had great potential, but it could have been worked on to add realism...so it isn't much of a determining factor when selecting the card. Addressing the 16meg of RAM/ROM... I hope it is 16/meg of RAM PLUS 16meg of ROM... My guess is that the ROM could be an external upgrade chip, with quality instruments already on it. Great idea to combine the two (AWE32 does this?). 16 meg should satisfy our sampling hunger for a while (and it can't be cheap...16 * $30.. you add it... I don't want to) Hopefully it is reasonably priced... With AMD involved, they should be. I am hoping $200 starting price... I wouldn't pay more than that... eric ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Feb 95 10:15:35 +0100 From: vincent@orsay.icdc.fr (Vincent RAYMOND) Subject: And DARK FORCE ???? Yesterday I found out that I could get the GUS sound in the Mortal Kombat II demo to work. What I did was to go to the sound directory and rename all the *.gvs to *.grv and then run ultramid -c -m100. Now you can run the demo and press F10 to configure the game for Gravis Ultrasound. The game sounds great now, instead of having to use SBOS. The new mixer out of gus0046.zip (i think) should only give sliders on a GUS rev3.7 or GUSMAX since theose cards have the more advanced mixer hardware. The GUS rev3.4 (like mine) will not have these functions. Its not poor software, just old hardware. Again, please carefully edit your reply if you "reply" to a question. I don't know if this will help some people, but I have experienced trouble running games which do not have native GUS support as well. My solution to this problem was to put a soundblaster (8 bit) card in my machine as well. The advantage is that you get native GUS support for programs that support it, and soundblaster support for non-GUS software. Some of you are probably thinking forget that, why crummy 8 bit when I have 16 bit. Well, in the SBOS emulation, your sound will likely be worse than a native soundblaster. Your choice, but if set up properly you have no problems. Additionally, I run Mortal Kombat using the soundblaster and have had no problems using a 4-button joystick properly. The key is to hook the joystick to the soundblaster and disable the GUS port. I do this for all my games and have had zero problems. John. Sir Sandford Fleming College. The sound was a bit choppy but I think this is due to my system lacking memory ( only 4 Megs ). I have an Ultrasound Max. Tried it with Maxsbos but sound was played too slow. Looks to be an awesome game and I hope the final version has NATIVE ULTRASOUND SUPPORT. Would be a >shame, the game looks to be very good (graphics, etc.). I posted this very problem back in January when the demo first came out, but no one was able to get the demo to work properly. The closest I got gives me jerky sound with a brief dropout every few seconds and makes the video skip a bit too, although not half as bad as the sound. The way I got it to work was to boot from a floppy that loaded only the stuff REQUIRED to run the demo (for me, that was the CDROM driver, MSCDEX, and my mouse driver - I think I was able to load HIMEM also, but can't remember for sure). UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES LOAD EMM386.SYS; having that loaded ALWAYS made my machine reboot. Then, I loaded SBOS with the "-o3" parameter (leaving the parameter off makes the video AND sound play at around 1/10th of the normal speed) and things worked as I described above. I was hoping to try the protect mode MegaEm on this demo, but as we all know it hasn't come out yet (in case you didn't realize, all the sound in the demo is digital - no midi or anything; the entire soundtrack is stored as WAV files on the CD, so if all else fails you can manually play those to see what the audio says). When things wouldn't work right, I called Spectrum Holobyte and their response was basically "tough luck". I got the same from Gravis Tech Support. Strangely enough, "A Final Unity" came out on a list of games posted by Gravis that is supposed to have GUS support. The guy I spoke to at Spectrum Holobyte said that there were no plans to support the GUS. However, one of the people who responded to my original Digest post said that when he called, Spectrum Holobyte's tech support said that they WERE supporting the GUS. Who knows? I suggest you call them yourself to get the latest scoop (and let us know what they say)! One last note: the .ini file stored on your hard disk has the drive letter of the CDROM drive in it. I use Stacker and had it loaded when I originally installed the demo, so I had to go back and change the .ini file afterwards because I didn't load Stacker with my reduced setup, which made the CDROM's drive letter change. Don't forget to do the same if you have to.
