GUS problems To: Ultrasound Daily Digest Well, I got my GUS hooked up to my stereo now (no more shitty little speakers!) and it sounds great, especially with Starcon2. There are one or two strangenesses that I hope someone can help straighten out, though... First, I'm getting some sort of weird feedback sometimes. Let me explain my setup: The gus line out goes into the AUX input on my stereo. The SPEAKER-B outputs from the stereo go into the line-in on the GUS (should this be mic-in instead?) My stereo lets me play from 2 input sources at once, so I can have both my CD player and the sound card playing at the same time (very convenient for certain games with sound effects but no music). It normally works fine, but sometimes, I get all sorts of garbled output on the stereo. It only happens if I have the stereo volume up past 5, and I have just run ultrinit. It seems as if the GUS is taking the stereo's output and passing it back in. SBOS immediately stops the problem, as does running playfile -r (no other parameters). Anyway, I can probably stop the problem just by putting playfile -r in my autoexec, but I'd rather not look at its error message every time I start up. So can people tell me any other ways to stop the problem? Also, is there anything wrong with my setup as it is, that might be unhealthy for the card? Second, since I put the card in, my 9600bps modem has gone on the fritz mysteriously on two or three different occasions. One minute it dialed and worked fine, the next minute, it would say "no dial tone" or something whenever I tried to dial anywhere. Nothing I tried would work, then, mysteriously, it would start working again. (And yes, there was a dial tone on the line the whole time). At first I thought my modem was dying on me, but now that I saw someone else's post relating to modem problems, I am not so sure. Does anybody have any ideas on the problem? Rixey" Message-Id: <727287819.774.0@unix6.andrew.cmu.edu> Subject: Modem conflicts To: Ultrasound Daily Digest In regards to Kevin Holly's problem with the modem - ever since the GUS, I've noticed a conflict with my modem as well (on two machines, a 386-25 and my new 486DX-50 - same problem). I'm using Telix (two different versions, including the newest one), and Telix simply crashes when I load up UNLESS I do one of three things: 1) Run SBOS 2) Run SBOS -f, even if I haven't loaded SBOS to begin with 3) Run Windows. The problem clears away after one of these. . .you might want to try that. - AkR - ar2w@andrew.cmu.edu ___ Art is anything you can get away with. - Marshal McLuhan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jan 93 23:54:28 EST From: ebynum@server.cs.jhu.edu Message-Id: <9301180453.AA02491@orca.es.com> Subject: No more static! To: Ultrasound Daily Digest Listen up, Well, my thanks go out to Apollo Shau-Yang Wong. He hit the problem right on the head in yesterday's digest. Seems I had memory clogged up with device drivers. I booted from a clean floppy, using low memory to set up a 4-meg ramdrive. The static's all but gone (there is still a little when I record a DDD compact disc, but I suppose that's to be expected with 8-bit recording). Time to look into the 16-bit daughter card? For those of you who have (or will have) this problem, let me save you some heartache. The way I see it, the GUS competes with other device drivers when it records, so make it feel special and remove as many of the other drivers as you possibly can. Put copies of autoexec.bat and config.sys on a bootable floppy so you can pop it in and reboot when you want to record. Second, make sure the signal's not too loud (or soft). Oftentimes the line out from a stereo receiver has no adjustable volume control, so you have two options: 1. Manufacture your own connector, using the speaker outputs. Then you can adjust the volume manually (attribute this idea to ko_mike@jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu; he's actually implemented it). 2. Get a direct connection from the headphone output to the microphone-in jack on the GUS. This, *in combination with* the line signal (hint - use USS8) works well for me. Once again, thanks to all of you who helped, most of all to Him Who maintains this Most Holy Digest. Later, all Evan H. Bynum ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jan 93 15:25:44 AST From: F. I found it works best with no settings using SBOS 1.22 Also ensure that you have about 600k free memory, or the game will crash halfway through with "not enough free memory error: (2) WHEN TELLING THE DIGEST ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL NEW PROGRAM YOU"VE UPLOADED TO EPAS, PLEASE SAY WHAT THE FILENAME IS! It's rather fustrating searching through files trying to guess which one is the one you want. (just a pet peeve of mine :-) ) (3) I'm missing digests v2n01-03 . I searched Epas but they are not there. Could someone please tell me if they actually exist? Or even send them to Epas so I can ftp them. Thanks! (4) Someone mentioned that they couldn't see the pathces listed in patch manager. All they could get was two black boxes. Well the patches are really there they're just black print on a black background. You can still highlight them if you try. To get them to appear you have to change your windows color scheme. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PEERSFW@NEWTON.CCS.TUNS.CA F. To: Ultrasound Daily Digest What is gravis going to do for we the brave who bought the GUS before it was popular, supported, or released with any real software or documentation? They are making all these wonderful changes to the software bundles and possibly to the hardware that comes standard on the GUS, but will they be sending us upgrade packages full of the new software and documentation? Or are they going to charge us to get copies of the changes we helped bring about by buying the board before everyone and essentially beta-testing it and the drivers/support for Gravis. Are there others out there who have this concern? IF so, please express it and maybe we will be heard. | | Tell me something I don't know | | MFinkel@Gas.uug.Arizona.edu | Show me something I can use | | =----> Tucson, Arizona | CONNECT THE GOD DAMN DOTS | | | -=Ministry=- | ------------------------------ End of Ultrasound Daily Digest V2 #15 ******************************
