Released To: Ultrasound Daily Digest OK, everyone. GUSMOD 2.0!!!! has made its debut. I figure the program warranted such a change. I hope you all like it. There are still some problems, and very potential bugs. I wrote an UltraSound IRQ detection system. It finds my IRQ all right and it should find yours. Some of the Protracker effects don't work quite properly, but all popping is removed under the UltraClick Removal System (still in beta). It has scopes, panning, etc. It doesn't have the TSR in this release (still waiting on some entry-exit routines). It does, with one executable, Terminate and Stay Resident permanently. Oh, it is available on archive.epas.utoronto.ca in the /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit directory. It is called GUSMOD20.LZH (appropriate, huh?). Have fun, and let me know what you think. (I can feel a bug fix release coming on...) To: Ultrasound Daily Digest Well Josh, your Gusmod 2.01 release fixed a few of those bugs I mentioned. Gusmod Bugs: - I still get clicks on the Beyond Music mod and several others - Gusmod still doesn't seem to handle 15 instrument mods - Are you doing low level writes at runtime? Smartdrive with write caching enabled on my SCSI drive hangs the player - Some mods will screw up the text display. i.e. about half way into the Turrican 2 mod does this (a quick swap to Scopes and back refreshes the display though) - I notice some flicker in the right half of the scope for Tracks 1 and 2 Wants: - user defined defaults for Master Volume and Pan Positions - Spectrum Analyzer (I've got an idea, howz about using vector balls as the units for it? Or for that matter how about vector balls that make up the scopes? Or sinus bobs? shade bobs? I'm getting carried away, maybe in the next Renaissance demo... - how about maintaining the text screen writes when in scope mode? This would be awesome. I've run your player in Dual Monitor mode and it's cool because I can switch to scopes and still see pan position, master volume, and channel volume changes. The VU meter and music information isn't updated though - support for MDA adapters on the text screen so the above will be nicer - have the player quit after the mod is done so I can play batches of mods with the X-Master shell - support for 3D panning (Wicked!) Gus Bugs: - it bites it when you execute GUS.EXE outside of the directory where the two inf files so it doesn't seem to be using the SET GUSMOD= environmental variable properly Wants: - option to load the music into EMS instead of conventional memory - a hot-key sequence that would bring up a text display like what's in GUSMOD.EXE and allow for volume and panning changes. Maybe even the option of loading a new module if its possible :) - have a realtime VU meter or other display in the MDA address range all the time! Is this possible without using the system timer? That would be soooo coool. I was playing classic tetris with GUS.EXE pumping out a Ren and Stimpy mod file. NO OTHER PLAYER CAN DO THIS! So much for GMM32. Imagine doing that and having vu meters or a text spectrum going at the same time on the monochrome screen. WOW! Later Josh! Damn, I luv your playerz :) Oh, I almost forgot to ask. Can I have the source? I'll e-mail you. ------------------------------ Date: 15 Feb 93 12:50:47 MDT From: sl859@cc.usu.edu Message-Id: <1993Feb15.125047.64057@cc.usu.edu> Subject: Gusmod 2.03 - Please read! To: Ultrasound Daily Digest > I downloaded a file called gmod202.lzh from EPAS. Is this gusmod 2.02, or is it > gusmod 1.2? This is Gusmod 2.02. Everyone, I need your help very quickly. Sometime within the next few hours, could you try this for me. 1) Turn off your computer and wait about thirty seconds. 2) Reboot WITHOUT running Ultrinit. 3) Run Gusmod. 4) You SHOULD get garbage on the screen. if not, you're lucky. If so, exit to DOS and run Ultrinit. 5) Run Gusmod again. It should work this time. NOTE: Do this with autodetection. Why do I want you to do this? Apparently, ALL of the IRQ and DMA information has to be programmed to the card to make it work correctly. This includes the GF1 IRQ, MIDI IRQ, DMA In, and DMA Out. I'm only programming the GF1 IRQ. I tried the above steps on my machine, and got the results described. Please, please email me quickly. Gusmod 2.03 should be the last maintenance release for machines that it doesn't work on if the above is true. Here it is from what I understand. The memory capacity of the these options are all the same, but the manual requests that TMS44C256-10n or its equivalent be used. However, in most ads for memory, no such listing for part number is given. What you need to look for is 256Kx4 DRAM chips at 100ns or faster. I recently upgraded mine using 70ns and everything seems to work great. Just plug 'em in and go. My guess is that the GUS just needs the structure of the 256Kx4 to access the memory properly. I hope that helps. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 93 18:20:31 CST From: levitt@vault.WUstl.EDU (Scott Levitt -- Summer HS Coop) Message-Id: <9302160020.AA10849@vault.WUstl.EDU> Subject: MIDI in and out question... To: Ultrasound Daily Digest Hi, I have an SB-PRO midi interface and a GUS and am having trouble using the MIDI feature. I have gotten KB-MIDI for windows to play the Korg 700's instruments by pressing keys on my computer keyboard. I.e. I press the 'z' key, it plays a low note using the current instrument selected on my keyboard. But I need to know how to use my keyboard to drive the Gravis instruments. How can I get it so that I can use, for example, the acpiano1 by playing my keyboard? I've tried reversing the MIDI in and out wires, and that does nothing. They consist of Looper and Player. Looper plays *.wav files conitnously in the background, and Player plays *.wav files by double-clicking them in a File Manager or NDW drive window. What makes Player difference from all the other WavePlayers that do the same is that it has a different playing algorithm. You can play files of unlimited length without loading them into memory first. That's great if you have long *.wav files on your hard disk or a CD-ROM. If you have a Pro AudioSpectrum you can play back two *.wav files at the same time with Player. It is now possible to play back *.wav files while Looper or Winmod or Winmod PRO or any other program is playing back sound. You should definitely check these progs out. The archive name is WAVUTL11.ZIP. It will play the 'system sounds', but nothing from WinMOD, WinJammer or any other program I have of that nature. Every time I start windows it gives me the message 'Invalid Patch' twice.. and when I attempt to play something, the programs appear to work, but no sound comes out. (i.e. The track counter progresses, but no sound) This has had me frustrated for a long time... Next problem... In playmidi.exe (ver 3.50 and the one shipped with Install v1.20) I am consistently getting errors on certain .mid files like Failure to load patch [name here] [number] - [number] I cannot figure out why this occurs (or how to fix it). And finally, what is the phone number (or address) of ElkCo or some other place to order D-RAMS at a reasonable price? I have been scouring Computer Shopper, and most places say they are either currently out of stock of DRAM or don't carry them any more...
