To: Ultrasound Daily Digest I've noticed some discussion about the FAT table being scrambled. I also had the same problem. I'm not sure it is tied to a particular application. It seems everyone had run different programs when it happened. Just before my FAT table scrambled I had run the game "The Incredible Machine" from Sierra. Upon exiting the game, my system froze. When I rebooted I noticed an entire directory tree had been destroyed. (fun!) I was able to correct that problem using Norton Utilities, however my volume label now has garbage in it, and I can't change it. Even when I try to do a DOS LABEL command, it states it can't process the entry. If anyone can figure out the problem, let us know so we can avoid it happening again!!!!! To: Ultrasound Daily Digest Well, I sent mail to Sierra-on-line after the nice fellow posted all of those e-mail addresses. SOL was the only response I've had so far and it was a bad one. To paraphrase, they said "no plans for GUS support at this moment" Well, then I say to them "Screw You!" They've jerked us all around. First no support. Then support. Then no support. Frankly I don't care if they support GUS or not. Seriously their games really lick anyways. They're all the SAME! I used to like Kings Quest several years ago. It was considered innovative but now? No way. All their damn games are the same. They use the same engine. They only thing they have to do for a game is make new graphics, new music and a new story line. Whoopee! Yah, they're really breaking new ground. If you've played one, you've played them all. The interface sucks too. I preferred the text parsor because it didn't limit your immagination. Sure the GUI is much simpler to use which is good for children but you've got your options all layed out. More user friendly but not as educational. My final words to SOL: Eat me! This was fine until I got futher along and then the screen froze and broke up, and the whole thing hung. After this happend twice (I had to do this myself with no help from Sierra), I decided it wasn't worth it. Plus the fact that Sierra acknowledges the fact that there is a driver problem that they weren't going to fix, I decided to dump it. All this points to is that it may be an intermitent problem, but the problem is there and everybody should be aware of it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1993 14:28:03 -0800 (PST) From: Ben Gardner Message-Id: Subject: submit To: Ultrasound Daily Digest As many of you know SBOS will not run with OS/2 as far as i can tell. The driver loads and everything fine. But when trying to run a game or anything. You get major conflicts. Does anybody know of a place i can complain to get some drivers made. Or has anyone figured any tricks in thier setups that they could share to help me out. I am running OS/2 2.0 and about to switch to 2.1 praying that will fill my problem. (The OS/2 version particularly) I've sent you two e- > mails about it, and received no response, so I figured I'd send this to the > whole list...anyone else working on interesting GUS software for OS/2? Hmmm.. good thing you did - because I did not receive any mail from you. In fact, I only received mail from one person. They did not use my green@roboco.uucp - but rather, roboco!green@utai.toronto.edu. I have changed my .sig to reflect this. Csound works well... of course it does not make any sounds under OS/2. I have been in touch my Advanced Gravis MANY times about the non disclosure agreement needed to get a copy of the SDK source code (needed to write any OS/2 driver). I have yet to receive anything. On the bright side, you can play the output under DOS. I have also just written a little program that converts .pat files into AIFF files for use with Csound. *NOTE* If anybody sent me mail about Csound and did not receive a reply - please try again - but this time to roboco!green@utai.toronto.edu. I am constantly making little changes to Csound - and will wait for a couple more days before I send it out. Thanks -- Anthony T. What it does do is play very Ad-Libbish sounding music (no drums or separate instruments - they all sound the same) with some pretty decent digitized voices using SBOS 1.22 with no extra switches. Make sure you have plenty of conventional memory (it requires 580k for all sounds) and plenty of EMS (at least 1 meg). I noticed that in the install some of the sound options I saw was General Midi and then there was a General Midi music with Soundblaster sounds. Is there any way to utilize either of these with the GUS to get the enhanced music capabilities that the GUS is able to achieve? Or is there some sort of upgrade on the way (either from Lucas or one of you who CAN program for the GUS) to allow the GUS to work in it's native mode? While all the sounds worked and such, it was quite disappointing to hear the 'one instrument Ad-Lib' music playing after all the .MID .MOD and .669 music I had heard. Please respond and correct any misperceptions I have stated or to answer any of the questions I have raised either via this group, comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcards, or via email. P.S. The game is really cool - very playable and no noticeable slowdown with SBOS. ****************************************************************************** * --> Mfinkel@gas.uug.arizona.edu * Someone keeps moving my chair * * Tucson, Arizona U.S.A. * -They Might Be Giants * ****************************************************************************** ------------------------------ End of Ultrasound Daily Digest V2 #54 ******************************
