This is very useful, especially for those of you who don't like the idea of having a boot disk for Zone66 (which is EXCELLENT -- if you don't have it, GET IT!). Now you can swap back and forth at will. It's available on epas. -Al ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Albert C. It also discussed other 'exotic' cards, like the Adlib Gold 1000, Opti.Sound and the Turtle Beach MultiSound. They were impressed with the GUS's sound quality. Their conclusion was (not surprisingly) that the MultiSound has the best sound quality, but that it is too expensive. The GUS, so they said, is versatile and 'has everything for almost nothing'. So good value for money! Their only complaint was the not so very good software support, but they mentioned that Gravis is working on improvement of their drivers. To: Ultrasound Daily Digest The new version of the GUS drivers in windows work great. But still I have a question on loading patches. I have downloaded a midi named " A Night On Bald Mountain ", I need to reset all the patches for that midi using Win- jammer (ver 2.24), it sounds OK in Winjammer. But when I tried to load this midi with "Media Player" or "MCS Stereo", I've found that not all the patches in that midi were loaded, only 8 of them were loaded and it sounds weird. Each time I played this midi, I've to loaded manually using patch manager or use winjammer. Could anyone help to solve this problem? I do have: 1024 Kb of dram on GUS set resolution to High Fidelity set active voices to 20 default IRQs, PORT, and CHANNEL set midimapper to cachable or non-cachable cacheable (gives more patches, still not all) non-cacheable ( gives only 8 patches) Thanks in advance! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 93 21:53:26 WET From: dp@hydra.carleton.CA (Dave Perry VE3IFB) Message-Id: <9303200253.AA28655@hydra.carleton.CA> Subject: Midi interface To: Ultrasound Daily Digest Dave, I reviewed the note that Paul Cunnel sent you and found it to be accurate. The interface I built was the same with 3 exceptions: 1. I used a 4n137 rather than a 4n138, which as Paul points out may be marginal for current requirements, but I had one. 2. I used a 4K7 resistor pullup on the opto rather than 270 ohms. 270 ohms seemed a bit low to me, considering the current transfer ratio of the 4n137 and the LED current. 3. I added a 0.1uF bypass capacitor near the opto, as recommended in the data sheet. I hope this helps. I tried changing my DMA's/IRQ's with setgus. I eventually had a test fail - an IRQ conflict. Maybe this is really an IRQ problem. I don't know. Phat Tran suggested trying the same DMA channel for playback and record, although I don't know if this would have an impact on Windows. Once I thought I had things worked out, I made a new MIDI file. It has bad notes in it! It'll honk out a note when there should be none, on some weird pitch. And timing is really off. It kind of stutters, even with Media player. I tried a "big" MIDI file, one that has a lot going on in it, and I got kicked out of Windows *twice*! It didn't display an error message, just booted me back to the C: prompt. I tried this with and without the MIDI card installed, so that's not the problem. One time it just completely locked up with the GUS bleating out a chord. I have also gotten EMM386 Exception Error 06, which is invalid opcode. And of course SBOS still hangs when it loads. I am going to call the Packard Bell hardware support line today and see what DMAs/IRQs the hardware might be using. The software support folks said I can use DMA 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7. 2 is reserved for hard drives and 4 cascades for 0-3. IRQ's - who knows. When I use MSD, it looks like they're all assigned! There are several messages in today's digest about people having problems with the Windows drivers. I'm really beginning to think there are bugs in the code. Will the new PAT files work with the original Windows drivers that came on my 1.1 install disks? That's an option. Oh - one more thing. I tried loading SBOS with -x3 and it said something like "NMI not on this machine" (some three letter N acronym I'd never heard of - it's written down at home, of course). Thought that was weird. I have seldom had SERIOUS SBOS problems before. I have whine occasionally about out-of-pitch and out-of-phase problems, but I have never had *total death*. I say this to let you know that I seem to have a fairly vanilla configuration. (386-40, Opti (but never any problems), 4Meg, EMM386, Smartdrive, no stacker, etc etc). Everything on the new disks worked wonderfully when I installed. No hangs, no problems. I took the defaults, which gave me DMA 7, BTW. I guess it figured out that my chips worked ok. Windows drivers work great. SBOS seems to load itself and unload with no problem. UNTIL...I ran Kings Quest 5. The game immediately gave me a dialog box saying "Could not initialize sound card". When I told it to continue, I then got a message saying that EMM386 had gotten a fatal exception. At this point I had to reboot. I tried everything I could think of. Did not load the initializing driver. Loaded SBOS low. Did not load SBOS in AUTOEXEC. Used switches. Everything I could think of. No go. I finally fell back to 1.37B (you will remember that 1.4b2 was out of tune) and all was well again. So it is clearly SBOS itself, not the setup. Personally, I don't care THAT much. I can run KQ5 on my D110, and besides, I don't play it much anyway. It is mainly my daughter's, and she has lots of homework! But I'm concerned that if this SBOS gets shipped to the whole world with SB Compatibility trumpeted, and if it fails on a lot of games, that the GUS will begin to get a seriously bad reputation in the world at large. Burns ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 93 23:06:03 EST From: pccmoddan@aol.com Message-Id: <9303192306.tn42209@aol.com> Subject: The Great Subversive To: Ultrasound Daily Digest Here's a story, but it has nothing to do with anyone named Brady. After watching a lot of GUS bashing, Aria praising (and the reverse) etc. on a soundcard discussion on America Online, I composed the following reply. People such as the author of the Soundblaster book and others were making comments along the lines of 'the GUS is a great MOD player, but it's garbage for anything else' and 'I hooked the card along with my MIDI setup and it was terribly noisy' You really would have to be here, but I'm happy to make anyone laugh.... Here are some observations related to all your bickering: 1) Dan Nicholson doesn't know anything about Sierra, the card industry, sound support, or writing music. 2) This means that all of Rich's "highly respected" people in the soundcard industry don't either, since they share the same occupation. 3) Someone is going to point out that Dan Nicholson is a novice with very little experience. 4) Music (coming forth from EITHER an SB Pro or a GUS) speaks louder than words. 5) Experts are people who are good at pretending that they know more than everyone else. Geniuses are people that do. 6) I haven't seen a genius in years. If you have, please email me. 7) Wouldn't it be wonderful if Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Front 242, Public Enemy, and Pat Methany all sounded the same? 8) They would if they all wrote for General Midi. 9) Music used to be an art form. 10) Music is now what the programmer does in his spare time. 11) The Aria cards are ROM based (as are most wavetable sound cards). The Gravis UltraSound is RAM based. I can a do a heck of a lot more with a blank canvas and some paint than I can do with colorforms. 12) It is not hurting me or the other firms I work with to support the Gravis. Apparently, it would damage Sierra for life. I don't know about you, but this kinda tells me a little about Sierra. 13) After watching many computer industry companies over the years, I've noticed an awful lot of similarities in business practice between Microsoft, Sierra, and Creative Labs. 14) I can find a LOT of applications that scream for more than 4 DAC channels. This is why various groups are currently creating new formats with 16 and 32 channel support. You'll be seeing it in games (yes, commercial games) with n a few months. Ken W. and crew will probably "invent" the idea around Space Quest XXVI. 15) The real reason Rich doesn't like the UltraSound: Rich is a happenin' dude. He keeps up with the latest trends. Today's trend is GRUNGE. Grunge in everything: grunge fashion, grunge movies, grunge ice cream, and.. grungey sounding soundcards. Hey, I've got one, a good old Creative Labs SB Pro (v1 vintage). The best part is, you can pick 'em up for almost nothing compared to mall groupie grunge like the Waveblaster. 16) The UltraSound is (shhhh) QUIET. Let's see, turn up the SBP's channel to 10..... there's that airplane rumble sample I've been looking for! And now the UltraSound.... Well, it LOOKS like it's turned up all the way, but I don't hear no rumble. Now, the CD player.... nothing. If your Ultrasound is noisy and picking up any interference, take it back, it must be defective. 17) There are two kinds of people in the gaming industry. Those who do it for the money and those who do it because they love doing it. Seems to me that people who do something they like to do, do it a whole lot better than those who just want to make a buck. 18) It's really very funny that you find the most backward, conservative people in one of the fastest-changing industries the planet has ever seen. Those who don't want to change with it are generally left behind. Those who are th first to make changes are rewarded. 19) If you'd like to see a game, want more support for your sound card or want to tell me how insane I must be, call PCkS at (908) 964-8066. Call anytime -- if I'm not around, my wonderful pre-recorded message is. No "experts" please. :) 20) Most of the gaming industry is, unfortunately, like any other big business. They don't really care about the customer. All they care about is profit. As long as the customers remain indifferent to being pushed around and buying whatever product comes out, the companies will keep making whatever they please. Speak out. Write letters, send email, videotaped threats (.AVI if you've got a fast modem), fax everyone. They >will< hear your voice eventually. True, some of these companies may not listen unless you hit them in the pocketbook, but it's worth it in the end. Note that I am in NO WAY condoning piracy. (After all, if a program is good, it deserves your money, and if it's not then why would you want it anyway?) 21) Yes, I am related to Paul Revere, Hagbard Celine and Adam Weishaupt. 22) If you take offense to anything in this message, then you probably should. If you don't, you're probably laughing your noggin off right now. 23) I have never received monetary payments from any soundcard manufacturer to champion their product, but hey, why not start now? Can't say I'd actually do it, but I'll sure cash your check. 24) PCkS is a real company (but then again what is "real" eh?) Unlike most companies we're not under one roof. I'm the only one at this location, but six people are currently involved. 25) Yes, PCkS really does stand for Phantom Chicken Software. Shame there's no motto to go along with it. 26) Nothing beyond 23 matters. >end< excuse the utterly horrible text formatting. On the other hand, the volume control on the SB is behind the computer and not so easy to reach. I solved the problem by connecting LINE OUT to an old stereo receiver and also connecting a decent pair of speakers to it instead of the Walkman-type speakers. Wow! That produces great sound. However, if you don't have a spare receiver, as I did, I did see in Nobody Beats the Wiz a possible solution: it's a volume control with Walkman-type connectors (M/F) on it. It's a wire with a thumwheel in the middle, and M connector on one end and F on the other. I seem to recall the price being something like $10-15 (USA), and I think it was made by Recotron. I haven't heard it described in this mailing list before, so here goes. The problem is that after a while my program stops listening to mouse clicks. This happens with a Sierra Online kids program called Alphabet Blocks (Windows 3.1 version). After a while the program doesn't seem to receive the mouse clicks. If you keep on clicking after maybe 20 clicks each click starts to generate a beep on the PC speaker. To get out of it I hit and then . When I'm returned to Windows it is obvious that some or all of the mouse clicks have been handled by Windows, because my screen has been rearranged some (like an arbitrary mouse click might do). No, I don't have SBOS running when I fire up Windows. I called Sierra Online about 3 weeks ago. Their tech support person took careful notes. He said that they had never had this exact problem with a GUS setup but that they had similar things happen. He promised to send a release that was supposed to fix/help this (it hasn't arrived yet, though). Oh, yes, for a while the only program this problem happened with was Alphabet Blocks. However, a week or so ago I ftp'd a shareware/freeware disk copying program for Windows (I forget its name) and once it also stopped listening to mouse clicks. I don't know the exact settings for my DOS and Windows configuration stuff. (I know a lot about computers in general but only got a PC in January.) If anyone has any idea of what is going on here or has any hints to try to get around this problem I'd love to hear them. I'd be glad to experiment with different suggestions. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1993 04:21:21 -0500 From: "Loking...
