After considering for a few days that the pathname digest/general might be well-known and well-loved, I have rebuilt the archives of the daily general digest to extract to the path general/ rather than daily/ and have reloaded the resulting tar image to the submit directory of epas, as general.tar. This tar image has the same contents as last weekend's daily.tar, it simply will extract to a different path. -- Randy Wright Usmail: Convex Computers Phone: (214) 497-4868 3000 Waterview Pky. I have the EXACT same problem! But under different sircumstances, a while ago i got angry at windows and deleted its 10mb swap file, just to irritate it :), but it came back, it now hides my mouse! I did also upgrade the gus disks about the same time, (but i dont remember which one as they change soo much). The only way i can get the mouse working is (in a strange way), i have to goto control panel, then run 386Enhansed mode setup then goto virtual memory (where you change the swapfile settings), then without changing ANY settings quit out of all that and exit windows, then just re-run it, after that the mouse is perfect! But if you reset the computer it will not work any more... Weird hey?? But it doesnt really bother me, Windows is out to get me but i can face the chalange... :-) Anybody know what is going on???? That's because the GUS uses 16 ports at the base address (0x240-0x24f) and 16 ports on the next bank (0x340-0x34f). There IS a conflict. It also uses 0x388 and 0x389 for Adlib. -- \\\ Mike Batchelor /// mikebat@clark.net \\\ M.Batchelor@babylon4.clark.net /// "The avalanche has already begun. Gravis has annouced that they will be releasing another version of the OS/2 driver "soon." Until then, Robert Manley's fine OS/2 drivers (once registered) give one full Roland compatibility (and perhaps SB, but I don't recall) in DOS boxes. Which means that you can load Roland drivers in WINOS2 and they will work! Should I get the GUS Midi box or are there alternatives (cheaper perhaps). Oh yeah, and if I should got for an alternative MIDI box, why? Thanks, -George ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 1995 21:10:50 -0800 (PST) From: Ted Ching Subject: MIDI Playback I think that Gravis should try and implement some software MIDI effects such as chorus, reverb, etc. in their drivers. Without them, the GUS's MIDI playback sounds really dry and shallow, in my opinion. The percussion (hi hats, toms snare drums), guitars, and bass are *especially* poor. Maybe i'm biased becucause i'm comparing the GUS to a Sound Canvas, but i still think Gravis could do a better job, even if their expertise is making joysticks. I believe impelementing MIDI effects via software will vastly enhance the GUS's MIDI playback quality. This is important, because now as the GUS is actually being supported in games, users are comparing MIDI playback, and currently, the GUS doesn't fare to well. This task also isn't too diffcult (it may be for Gravis though). For instance, a way to make insturments sound better is to use two channels to produce it. (Roland uses this method). Don't tell me this wastes oscillators. The GUS has 32, which is plenty for the average GMIDI file. the SCC-1 only has 24 and sounds worlds better than a GUS (largely becuause of better patches, but also becuse of its MIDI effects, and the use of two oscillators to play one inturment) Just exactly what is Gravis working on right now? It should be on improving their software. ICS gave them a great chip, but their shoddy software hasn't done anytthing for it. It took them a few years just to get some decent software for the card. If they don't make their card significantly better, i really don't think it will be around for another few years. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 1995 20:12:57 -0800 (PST) From: "Scott@CCnet Tech Support" Subject: More DMA Woes After Further testing, it appears my GUS fails all DMA testing (I thought it was just DMA1) and this prevents HMI based games (Descent) from working. Jordahl) Subject: New Warcraft Patch - GUS Support Broken I grabbed the new Warcraft 1.2 patch from the games/incoming directory on one of the game archive servers (sorry, I forgot which one). I installed it and found that it no longer recognizes the GUS for digital sound (an error message is displayed and the programs exits). If you re-run the new setup utility and re-specify the GUS for sound and music, you get the same error. I tried different combinations to no avail. Does anyone know the best way to contact these guys to let them know?? I would upload the new patch (warcr1_2.exe) to EPAS, but it doesn't make since if it breaks GUS support!! BTW: Here are the details on revision history for this patch release: -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.20: Significantly improved speed for slower systems Corrected irregular slow modem play for all modems Added support for WaveJammer and RAP 10 sound cards Updated Pro Audio sound drivers Added WAR_EDIT.EXE utility for extra FUN! 1.16: Added command line option for enhanced connectivity Final copy protection enhancement 1.15: Enhanced direct link and modem connectivity Fixed bug affecting scores over 12,000 Improved copy protection for ease of use Gravis UltraSound support added 1.14: Fixed speech bug 1.13: Replaced CD-ROM copy protection with floppy copy protection Fixed human level 7 bug Updated DOS 4/GW extender -------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Scott |=|=|=|=|=| Scott A. Check Robert's drivers (ulta06d or something) they give me sound support even in DOS, e.g. I can work with fasttracker in a DOS-box, Wing-Commander, DOOM 2 music no sound effects, etc. Roland ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Mar 1995 09:50:17 +0100 (MET) From: gbrink@NKI.NL Subject: SB-PRO and GUS-MAX Dear All, Recently Damian Scully wrote : > I have a GUS and an old mono SB compatible. The only configuration that worked for me was : GUS-MAX addr 230 Int 11 DMA 1 SB-PRO addr 240 Int 5 DMA 1 I've got both soundcards hooked up to a mix-panel which is hooked up to my amplifier. So both cards are on one amplifier channel. This is very handy. For instance with Little Big adventure , you can choose Music through GUS and digital soundeffects through SB-PRO. Both cards will play simmultaneously through one amplifier channel without any problem.
