GUS in South Africa Sierra and your GUS Ultrasound Daily Digest V3 #59 Standard Info: - Meta-info about the GUS can be found at the end of the Digest. - Before you ask a question, please READ THE FAQ. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 1 Jun 93 12:08:28 EDT From: cognex!sol_azteca!bobt@ai.mit.edu (Bob Tillman) Subject: 44.1 vs 48 KHz sample rate Message-ID: <9306011608.AA15117@sol_azteca.cognex.com> Here is my understanding of this mess: Digital audio systems require an anti-aliasing low-pass filter to cut off the artifacts of sampling. With a 44.1k sample rate, this filter has to have a much sharper cutoff than with a 48k sample rate. If done in the analog domain, sharper filters tend to have phase problems near the cutoff frequency. I believe that this is probably the major reason why 48k is preferred to 44.1 for professional recordings. (You all are invited to tell me why I'm wrong... :) In the past few years, over-sampled D/A and A/D have lessened the need for this because the sharp filter can be implemented in the digital domain, where it can be made to have much better phase behavior near the cutoff. According to the digital signals class I took lo those many years ago: assuming the "ideal" anti-aliasing filter, as long as the sampling frequency is more than twice the highest signal frequency of interest, no information will be lost in the A/D/A conversion. Now if we could only order a few of those "ideal" filters... cheers, Bob Tillman cognex!bobt@ai.mit.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jun 93 22:08 GMT0BST-1 From: Paul Kokis Subject: 7th Guest w/GUS Message-ID: I'm using SBOS v1.20, but should be receiving some more recent versions on floppy from a fellow GUSer soon. My graphics card is a Tseng ET4000 chipset one - I've also run t7g on a Boca (Cirrus chipset): makes _no_ difference to my sound probs. As far as t7g ratings go, I installed it while using the Boca, which was c58%. I haven't retried since changing to the Tseng, but as I still have the sound prob I guess it's not that! I eagerly await the availability of the GUS Miles drivers - perhaps they'd help! Message-ID: <9306011956.AA29139@hal.gnu.ai.mit.edu> I just purchased a Scanmaker 2 from microtek and have a terrible time trying to set the thing up! The tech support line held me for 20 minutes and THEN asked me to leave a message(buttwhads!) None the less I am seeting the scanner SCSI card to address d400-d800. Does the GUS use this set of addresses in any way? I need to get this configured so my wife can freelance graphic design. My other hardware considerations are a trident 8900, a GUS(220, irq7), IDE/io, and a cheasy 2400 bps internal modem. I am currently using a 386/25 with a quantum 80 meg hd. Any suggestions? treason@gnu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jun 93 09:17:29 +0200 From: rogan@concave.cs.wits.ac.za (Rogan Alan Hastings Dawes) Subject: GUS in South Africa Message-ID: <9306010717.AA02349@concave.cs.wits.ac.za> My thanks to all the folks who posted and mailed to suggest ways of getting hold of a GUS here in South Africa. For the rest of us South Africans who also want to know what the results were, here follows a brief synopsis. The general consensus seemed to be that I should get a local company to do the importing for me. It doesn't turn out to be all that expensive, and that way, if there is a problem with the card, they carry the can :-) Michael Patricios (electrical engineering here at Wits) ordered his GUS from the Software Connection in Eastgate, and paid R600-00 for it. Another friend of mine got his from the Software Connection for R900-00, (Pretoria branch), but that seemed to have extras ( I'm not quite sure what) If there isn't a Software Connection near you, try your local dealer, you might be able to work something out. Apparently, Software Connection has the best turnaround time, but I'm open to correction. Thanks again to all who wrote . . . You take any of the very new Sierra releases, such as Eco Quest II, and (the one I have tried) Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist. They all are fully Windows executable, inside a window, and what does that mean? Multimedia Extensions! Simply switch to conserve memory for patches, load up load1024.mid with patchmanager (if you have 1 meg that is), and make sure when you setup the Sierra game you choose 'Extended Level MIDI' , and I gotta tell you the game sounds UNREAL! Full midi music, topped off with all the digitised sound effects! Only one little problem with it, as you might expect, the volume levels of the music in general is a little weak, GRAVIS PLEASE release new drivers for the GUS in windows that take care of the volume mapping problem, its bad enough having to vmap every mid we play, but for these multimedia games it is CRUCIAL!!! Still if GMOS is this good, then I cant wait! But to the people working on GMOS, is it really a case of when, and not if? Will it for sure see the light of day? adrian (World Circuit patch? I'm looking for something like Microsoft's voice pilot. In3cube is pretty good, but statically defines the commands you can execute, and the real version costs $180! Plus, I've noticed many times when the program interprets speech, music, mouse clicks as commands. Perhaps this is because I have a cheap microphone, and I really need a headset microphone to avoid noise being interpreted as commands. Is it available ? What about any software supporting the GUS ? The only one I know (besides demos and trackers) are Zone66 and Race into Space... Are there any other ? What about the game coded by Future Crew which was announced to support the GUS ? Any news ? I am worried about GUS software, though the Miles Driver are a great announcement...
