On a similar midi theme how do I go about creating my own patches for use with the GUS card? For the type of music I'm interesting in creating (i.e rave/dance music) the supplied patches are too limiting. Are there any public domain music creating proggies available, and if so can anyone recommend any good ones? Cheers Steve (University of Coventry) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Jun 93 13:05:38 From: john.smith@gravis.com Subject: FPTEST V.04 Message-ID: <9306031305.A7914wk@gravis.com> I released a 3D demo for the UltraSound today called FPTEST V.04. It is a simple demo that requires a GUS w/512K and an Analog joystick. There are 5 different sounds which you can choose and by using an ANALOG joystick you can move the sounds around your head. Below is the README file included with this file (FPTEST04.ZIP). It explains what you can expect from this demo. C'ya, and happy GUSing John 1.0.0 About this 3D Demo ======================== This program is a small demo of 3D sound on the Gravis UltraSound. You have probably all heard about the UltraSound 3D sound by now. If not, please refer to some of the press releases or the documentation contained in our UltraSound software developers toolkit. Basically, it allows the UltraSound to place a sound in a 360 degree sphere around you, the user, from just two speakers/headphones. No other hardware is required, except a GUS of course One thing to keep in mind when listening to this demo is that we are NOT games or demos programmers. So don't expect amazing explosions with awesome visuals to go along with it. We'll leave that up to the professional game and demo publishers. Yes, people are working on these types of programs and when they are available I'll be making them available on our BBS. We did supply a sample 3D sound file with our software developers toolkit called WARP3D.F3D. This was simply a sample 3D sound file for developers to try and program for the 3D sound format, NOT a demo. So don't thrash on it to hard. The sound samples in this demo are 16bit 44.1kHz sounds. So unlike WARP3D you won't have any hissing. 2.0.0 How to use FPTEST ======================= To listen to this 3D demo simply type FPTEST at the command line. You will then be asked to calibrate your joystick. Once that is done simply press a number between 1 and 5 to change the sound effect. #1 Bell #2 Engine (runs continuously until another sound is selected) #3 Footstep (this is a good one) #4 Laser zap #5 Explosion Note that at different frequencies the same stored sound could provide many different effects. Although this demo is sound effects only, music patches could also be frequency shifted while maintaining 3D localization. 3.0.0 Hints and Tricks ====================== Here are some hints and tricks to get the best results out of this 3D demo - Use headphones instead of speakers. Yes, the 3D effects still work on speakers but the effect less pronounced. If you want to use speakers make sure they are level with your ears, about 3 feet apart and aimed for the middle of your head. - Use an ANALOG style joystick, not a SWITCH STICK. - If you are having problems localizing the sound simply close your eyes and concentrate. - You will NEED an UltraSound with at least 512K of memory and an Analog joystick for this demo to work. One very important thing to keep in mind, is that we are all surrounded by 3D sound EVERY DAY! So don't expect mind blowing orgasmic audio. The big thing to keep in mind is that the 3D sounds you are listening to are being created ARTIFICIALLY. With that in mind, enjoy the demo. I am wondering what's all these talk about Gravis disk release 2.06. The disketts came with my GUS is v.2.05. How and where do I get my Gravis 2.06 disk? I looked at wuarchive, and it's not there. Also, the SBOS 2.08 (I have 2.04), is it also in release 2.06 disk? If not, where can I get a copy of it (again, it's not at wuarchive). Thanks for all your help. At first when I played 7th Guest I got all the music through SBOS, and all the speech. The music didn't sound real good, but at least I got all of it. Now as I get further into the story, the music seems to break up and cut out every now and then. Speech is still fine. So I'd be very interested in getting native mode for 7th Guest. Who should I bug? The stuff in the letter which should contain a file is UUENCODED. That means that - in order to send an 8-bit(binary)-file with 7-bit mail - the bytes are manipulated to fit the mail-format (otherwise they would have been stripped off!). To get the file back, simply do the following: copy the 'weird' section (beginning over the 'BEGIN'-statement and ending under the 'END'-statement) to a separate file (filename.UUE) and run UUDECODE with filename as parameter. Afterwards you should have the right file on your disk. UUDECODE-Utilities are available from most FTP-sites. This will likely be nothing new to you, but...i must say it (scream it out) : I hate SBOS ! Ok, ok, the games i tried worked with SBOS...but how! Monkey 1+2, X-Wing, Strike Commander, just forget it with SBOS! I heard Strike C. on a stupid SB2.0 and it was much much better than SBOS. So only 4 games that don't work very well, you say. Yeah, but i wanted this(!) sound so badly... Thats it, i just hope midpak/digpak won't be as disappointing as SBOS.
