Somebody in todays (6/8/93) digest that it was at fpt.uwp.edu in /pub/msdos/games/id, but I checked in there, and all they have are some pictures of scenes from the game, not anything actually playable, and certainly no sound demo (was dying to here that). They were broadcasting live from the CES in Chicago, from the Spectrum Holobyte booth. Much to my amazement, they had a rep from Advanced Gravis on the air talking about the GUS! I can't remember the rep's name, though I'm sure it wasn't John Smith or Brad Craig. He was a musician, and he made the point that because the GUS uses RAM to store its sounds, it is not limited to just the General MIDI patches. As an example, he said you could load in a whole meg of quality acoustic piano samples. He also talked about the 3D sound, especially the Turkey Shoot demo. Some of his comments: "You put these headphones on, and you hear this turkey flying around you. You try to shoot him using a joystick. Like if he is right behind you, you could pull back on the joystick and get him. It's really cool!" He also shed some light on some future products. The Ultrasound Maxx (sp) is simply a GUS which includes the 16-bit recording section and a SCSI port. List price: $299. Due out end of August. He did mention that current GUS owners can upgrade their cards by using daughterboards. No mention of when these upgrades will be available. Well, I thought that this was some great exposure for the GUS, espeically since no other sound card reps were on the show. -- aa344 is Joseph Maruschek 3 3 3 3 3 IBM PC SIGop, Youngstown Free-Net D D D D D motto: Strive for the simplest and the best. | | | | | : : : : : ------------------------------ Date: 8 Jun 93 16:00:13 EST From: "Joseph R. Granto" Subject: GUS recording help Message-ID: I have recently received my GUS, have just begun experimenting with recording. My first attempt worked wonderfully; I recorded a CD by having my GUS attached to the Tape 2 IN and OUT of my receiver. I was using USS8. Everything sounded just fine, but at the end of playback USS8 crashed, saying I needed to add the parameter D=64 to my EMM386 line (of the config.sys file). So I did this. Now, whenever I try to record anything, the sound is clipped. However, the clipping sound occurs regardless of signal level. Even at very low signal levels there is this annoying clicking. I have reset my config.sys to what it used to be, and still the problem persists. I cannot figure out what the problem is. I have recreated the exact situation when the recording worked fine, and still the sound sucks. Can someone please offer some solutions? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe Granto GLOCK@chip.cba.ufl.edu "When the going gets tough, the tough get a GLOCK!" --Guns & Ammo "Don't clock'em, GLOCK'em!" --Miami Dade police officer --------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jun 1993 18:37:22 -0700 From: Eric N. Liao Subject: GUS v2.06 software Message-ID: <199306090137.AA16302@aerospace.aero.org> I finally received my GUS software on Monday. It even included a note of apology for the delay. In the readme file, it stated that there were two versions of 2.06 (2.06 and 2.06L...2.06 was sent to the users, while the L version is on BBS.) Basically the 2.06L version includes more .MOD files (but no MIDIsoft recorder or Power Chords.) If someone hasn't already done so, could someone extract just the MOD (and MIDI) files that are in 2.06L, but not 2.06? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jun 1993 02:10:22 -0400 From: KWAN RICHARD SIK YIU Subject: Loading patches in windows ? Message-ID: <93Jun9.021030edt.6258@skule.ecf.toronto.edu> Is there any way to know the exact patches required for the sierra games in windows? Cause I tried load1024.mid and loadgm.mid on Eco-quest II, they both come out different. I know they contain different patches, but neither one of them got all the patches right for the game. load1024.mid gives a very impressive introduction music, but lack of some birds and drums sounds during the game. loadgm.mid gives a very very soft introduction music (almost unhearable!), but gives birds and some other background sounds during the game. Unfortunately, some flute sounds near the end of the game was totally missing. (I am not too sure it should be flute or pipe, but I sure sound is missing there) Both sets of patches aren't the right one for the game. Is there any way to know what patches did sierra used in their new adventure games in windows? especially "Freddy Pharkas". POP and POP2 work fine for me if I run SBOS -o1. No pause, no lockup. Full-on QEMM stealth is active, and a whole lot of other stuff is loaded, too. Haven't tried it in DESQview yet, but that's about all I have left to push it any further - it's hard to break! Did you look in the manual at all? How about the FAQ? That's where I got the -o1 switch. Oh, and make sure you have SBOS v2.06 from archive.epas.utoronto.ca or the Gravis BBS. /////////////////////////////// //// Mike Batchelor /////////// //// mike@batpad.org ////////// //// Mar Vista, California //// /////////////////////////////// ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jun 93 16:53 GMT From: "Jonathan D. Hall" Subject: Problem with Playmidi and 8bit mode? Message-ID: <9306081722.AA03346@orca.es.com> Hi All I've only had my GUS a week and I've been collecting MID files from all over. Obviously having only 256k on the GUS many fail to load due to lack of memory. So I started using the -debug option on Playmidi V4.07 to find out how much ram each of the files needed. To my amazement many of the Mids I'd played successfully, including some of the examples in the 2.06L disks, need more than 256k of ram. So the question is this, does anyone know if Playmidi defaults to -8 (the 8 bit patch option), or is it just being clever and loading the patches as 8 bit when there's not enough memory for 16 bit patches. I also tried playing a tune that should fit into 256k (according to the debug option it needs only 90k for it's patches) with both the default and 8 bit patch options and I couldn't tell any difference in the sound. I'm wondering if my GUS is actually playing any 16 bit patches at all. I loaded SBOS, played World Circuit, then tried to unload SBOS (SBOS -f) and wasn't able to (something about keyboard interlocks). When I then tried to run Windows, the system crashed with the message "off board parity error at addr(HEX) = (0000:0002) system halted" It's a 486DX33, SBOS V2.08, 220,1,1,11,5 Original game port disabled. I think the MIDI side of this card is fabulous for the price and that is why I bought it. Good thing I wasn't looking for reliable SB emulation because my set-up and running experiences so far have been far from painless. sjf ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Jun 93 16:06:46 From: john.smith@gravis.com Subject: ULTRASOUND DAILY DIGEST V Message-ID: <9306071606.A9402wk@gravis.com> >How many of you have received the 2.06 Disks from Graivs?
