The UltraSound has a General MIDI compatible patch set, and UltraMID is intended to function this way. If it wasn't, ULTRAMID.INI wouldn't be mapped to a GM patch set. The MT-32 has a different, non-GM patch set and frequently uses data loaded by SYSEX. UltraMID supports neither of these. If there is a General MIDI, SCC-1, or Sound Canvas option for a program's music, chances are that the music will sound MUCH better than using the MT-32 option. Try it with Dune 2 (after running the patch, run Setup and select the Sound Canvas (note that you're going to lose digitized audio ability, and that it will try and play sound effects through the canvas, which will screw the music up occasionally, but you'll get the idea) If the guys who wrote the patch, which was very well done, would provide us with a DUNE.CFG file that uses the SC setting for music and leaves the sound effects and digitized audio to what they've currently got, I'm sure we'll get much better results. - Dan ________________________________________________ | Dan Nicholson | email: pccmoddan@aol.com | | aka | uuencoded: moddan@bowker.com | | Maelcum [KLF] | America Online: Levisionet | | and | VirtualNet: 2 @ 9082 | | [PCC] ModDan | Voice Phone: currently down | |_______________|______________________________| | | | Levisionet Technologies | | 553 Thoreau Terrace | | Union, NJ 07083 U.S.A. | | (Formerly PCkS Associates) | |______________________________________________| ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 93 08:44:40 EST From: David Mitchell Subject: Alternatives to epas, wuarchive? Someone suggest (sorry, forget who) that you put a DMA=128 (or is it D=128... or maybe that's for EMM) parameter into your QEMM line in your CONFIG.SYS file, and while I agree with this diagnosis, you MAY find that it causes problems for other pieces of software. I recently had to put a DMA=64 parameter in to get Monster Bash working, and on a whim, tried DMA=128... Wolfenstein 3-D and Spear of Destiny then ceased to work, and then Windows started acting up. And of course, by then, I'd forgotten that I changed it... so just a word of warning, you may want to try DMA=64 if DMA=128 causes some things to screw up. Just my $0.01 worth. I did everything that the readme file from dune2ail.zip (I think that was the file) told me to do. I had to reconfigure memory settings so that the ultramid was loaded high. I got the intorduction going. The music was great but some of the digital sounds were missing. I can't seem to get past the first menu. When I press start game, the music keeps playing and nothing happens. Oh well, it certainly looks promising anyways. BTW: what should I set the soundcard to in the setup. (Or does this matter?) spader@cs.mcgill.ca [END QUOTE] Here's what I did to get Dune 2 to work this way: ultrasnd=220,7,7,11,7 SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T1 [note the SB part is set to IRQ 7, it would not work for me with any other setting] I then set up dune2 for sound blaster support, BEFORE running dune2ail.exe Then I ran dune2ail.exe and proceeded to play the game. At first, on my system anyway, it sets up the mt-32 emulation and works just fine from then on. Since patch-making is officially SDK stuff, and heavy R2D touches on the limits of the MCI itself - it's natural that those of us who wish to DEVELOP a song using own patches and digital audio simply move over to the currently low-volume gus programmer's digest, and leave non-developers more space in the regular gus digest. -- Ido Amin iddos@math.tau.ac.il 3rd World Fox fax/voice +972-3-5172713 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jun 93 22:53:48 -0400 From: "Robinhood -- Marshall Lai" Subject: Windows Driver Problems: Can't open DOS session Message-ID: <9306280253.AA17695@crux2.cit.cornell.edu> Dear Fellow GUSers, Upgrading to WFS Pro 2.10a made something wierd happens. I don't think it is a problem with the upgrade because I've found that the problem persist even when I am not running WFS Pro. Problem: When the GUS drivers are accessed (by using WFS Pro or even using MidiSoft Recording Session) in Windows, anytime if I try to open a DOS session, Windows just dumps me back to DOS. Windows exited abnormally and when I try to run Windows again, the machine hangs. Sometimes, after the drivers are accessed, if I open a DOS session, Windows churns out some GPF like WINOLDAP causes a GPF in KRNL386 or the GUS driver. Both of these GPFs happened just now. Any clues to this situation? I've tried re-expanding KRNL386 and WINOLDAP.386 from the windows distribution disk. No go. This problem happens independently of whether SBOS is loaded before I go into windows. System setup: 486DX33 EISA, 20MB RAM, IDE caching controller, WDAC2200 and WDAC2340 IDE hard drives. OH, one more thing, I am using QEMM386 6.02 Thanks for your attentions. Marshall ------------------------------ End of Ultrasound Daily Digest V4 #27 *************************************
