Give us a chance to plan it out first. There will be an announcement this week. Before July.... I think. Wuarchive and epas will not be our only sites. But it will take time cause our sites and admins are scattered all over the world. So we don't getting the benefits of all sitting down in one room to work out all the details in one sitting. It takes time to ask questions and wait for replies. I too have tried every possible piece of recording software, drivers, ram disks all kinds of crap, moving the card away from the video etc etc but it still does these scratchy noises like soft scratches on a record at fairly regular intervals- they are especially annoying on the fade section of samples. My current theory on why this happens is that the gus's audio record section is picking up RF interference from its own DMA bursts off the bus in my particularly cheap motherboard. I think I've seen messages about this on csips and you could try emailing John Smith about it ( I havent tried this yet ) I cant do a lot about this at the moment as I'm moving house. Maybe, but I think we should leave the programming digest to the programmers. I don't know about anyone else but all that DMA interrupt vector double buffering widget wangling stuff goes way over my head. I'm not having (very) many problems with patch-making. It's patch using that bugs me. I don't think that using custom patches should really be called DEVELOPEMENT. Developement means C for me. Also, I suspect that volume will increase rapidly on the programmers' digest now the SDK has been released. I think our own digest or mailing list would be useful. After all, I'm sure that there are more people interested in making serious music than in LINUX drivers(the PUGD list) (but no offence to you guys), but we don't seem to be getting anywhere. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1993 00:59:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Morgan Stair Subject: SC2_DEMO is _WAY_ to dim Message-ID: The subject says it all. Message-ID: OK, I've now managed to get enough mem free to run t7g with ULTRAMID, playing midi using MT32 and speech with SBDIG. Despite what the GUSAIL97 readme says, I *can* use my V1.21 PATs (after PUPDATEing 'em). My only problem now is that screen updates have slowed down so as I can see the next frame dropping slowly down. Strangely, I get the SAME video % rating now as pre-AIL (52% using Cirrus). I tried changing to a Tseng ET4000 card - I got 1% of optimum! I thought ETs were fast in DOS? Comparing the two *running*, the ET seems to redraw slightly faster! I think I need some help! Anyone? Oh, BTW. I would be grateful if a UK-based Digest reader could snail me the latest GUS disks, as I'd like to have the latest PATs etc. Please contact me via my CIX address if you can help me out. I'm using sbos 2.08 to no avail. The box says "soundballaster only" as the supported sound card. Any ideas. Plus -- How can I tell if I have the Opti DAM problem -- where's the fix? Thanks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 93 20:22 GMT0BST-1 From: Paul Kokis Subject: ULTRAMID won't load high Message-ID: In-Reply-To: <9306270857.AA02488@itchy> I'm having terrible problems getting t7g to work with the AIL stuff. I already mentioned that ULTRAMID -C returns 'error loading patch', even after using PUPDATE. I now notice that Windows is saying 'Invalid Patch' just after the wallpaper comes up. I reloaded all the *original* patches again but I notice that (in PATCHMGR) they all have a ? as the first character. They now *play* in Windows (the PUPDATE-ed ones didn't), but I still get that 'Invalid..' message. Anyway, I noticed that my t7g screen update has *really* slowed with AIL, and I can't get enough mem free to run t7g past the credits. There seems to be no difference in available mem between ULTRAMID and LH ULTRAMID. Typing MEM /C shows ULTRAMID eating 54K conventional. What is going on? I'm considering changing back to sbos, just for an easy life! Paul. Apparently, a lightning struck on a powerline recently caused my system to crash which in turn screwed up my GUS windows drivers. After I reinstall the GUS windows drivers from the 2.06 disk, everything is ok once again. Marshall ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 93 14:42:18 From: gary@minster.york.ac.uk Message-ID: OK - let's liven this up a little. The reason I bought a GUS was to experiment with good quality sound synthesis. I don't mean playing .MOD files with Gravis's patches or having noises of jet fighters passing whilst I play tetris (which, incidentaly, I don't play). My interest is in using Linux as a good/high quality music and sound workstation. Currently there are few affordable music workstations. The SGI Indigo has some reasonable software but is too expensive. The NeXT is no longer made. Mainframes are difficult to attach DAs to. The CDP system is based upon the old Atari ST (although it is currently being ported to the Falcon) - a 66MHz 486 seems to give better price/performance than the humble ST. A PC running Linux could become a high powerful and easily affordable alternative. The GUS is cheap and gives moderately good results. Combine the two and we possibly have a strong combination for both amateur and professional alike. I consider direct to disk recording and direct from disk playback to be essential for this. Now what would be useful and interesting (at least to me:-) are the following (for example, not exclusively)... 1) direct to disk recorder 2) direct from disk playback 3) waveform-based sample file editors 4) port of c-music (or is it c-sound) 5) port of the phase vocoder 6) frequency spectrum manipulation tools (a la groucho?) 7) MIDI manipulation 8) WHY? Now 1 & 2 have been made much easier by the release of the SDK. Is Hannu interested/doing these already? Regarding 3 I believe that IRCAM have some interesting tools for this on their FTP site. I believe that they work under X and may be oriented towards some specific hardware. Anyone with any better knowledge? 4 and 5 shouldn't be too hard. (I always get c-sound and c-music mixed up.) I don't know of any software for 6. In 7 I was thinking of tclm (already ported), keynote (v4.7 already ported), mpu401 drivers (done), GUS midi drivers (looks easy) and perhaps MAX. 8) What Have You? What's on MITs media labs FTP site? How about using the GUS with MIDI to emulate commercially available samplers such as the AKAI S01? etc.... Am I alone in these aspirations? cheers.... gary ------------------------------ End of Ultrasound Daily Digest V4 #28 *************************************
