The Turtle Beach Maui will be a WaveBlaster clone, *not* a sound card in and of itself. It has a waveblaster connector, and is designed primarily to plug into the TB Tahiti, which *has no synth of it's own*. The Maui will certainly be at least $299 list (no less than $199 street), and the Tahiti will be running in the same bracket ($299-399 list). This combination will in *no way* compete with the GUS! TB's combo will run $400-500! Even if you simply added the Maui to an SB 16, you're still talking a $350+ price range. Secondly, to say that the UltraSound may have no future is naive. The card has a decent-sized established user base, which has proven to be one of the most religious-like followings of any product in this industry. There are a number of software developers who *really* like the UltraSound, and are supporting it right now. And with the AIL drivers available for the GUS the others have little excuse for lack of GUS support. This card hasn't been out terribly long, and for a product that takes a completely new and dynamic approach to the sound issue, it is doing extremely well. - Dan Nicholson ________________________________________________ | Dan Nicholson | email: pccmoddan@aol.com | | aka | uuencoded: moddan@bowker.com | | Maelcum [KLF] | America Online: PCC ModDan | | and | VirtualNet: 2 @ 9082 | | [PCC] ModDan | Voice Phone: currently down | |_______________|______________________________| | | | Levisionet Technologies | | 553 Thoreau Terrace | | Union, NJ 07083 U.S.A. | | (Formerly PCkS Associates) | |______________________________________________| ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jul 93 22:49 GMT From: EXT0012@VAX2.QUEENS-BELFAST.AC.UK Subject: Alone in the Dark & C-MO queries. Message-ID: <9307092158.AA18748@orca.es.com> Hi all. I know I'm slightly behind the times here, but could someone shed some light on using the GUS with "Alone in the Dark"? I've tried every combination of SBOS (2.08 & 2.0B9) switches I can think of, but to no avail. The only way I can get anything is to set it up as ADLIB for music and PC squeaker for sound effects - not ideal. Links 386 Pro sounds great, as does Strike Commander and XWing (with no switches!), but I wanna hear Alone in the dark! Also - a similar problem in Comanche MO - great music, no sounds or speech. I have got the mission disk set 1. Message-ID: <9307091840.AA02493@itchy> Yesterday's digest was delivered truncated to everyone. The problem was that John Smith's posting had a line that started with a period, and had nothing else on it. (Bad Gravis rep! Bad, bad! :) DON'T DO THIS! SMTP dictates that this is how to mark the end of a message in transit. So when the digest got to the first hop, everything after that line was truncated. I'll put a check into the MailServ program when I get some time, but for now just don't do this. It seems that the fulfillment house used the courier DHL ] to get the packages into Canada. All 2000 Canadian upgrades were sent ] to DHL Chicago to clear customs. Now for the real kicker. They sat ] in the DHL warehouse for 1 1/2 weeks before anyone decided to do ] anything with it. It then took them another week and 1/2 to get the ] packages cleared through customs. As of July 2nd, 1993 ALL Canadian ] packages are actually in this country. Canada post assures us that ] all packages will be delivered in 6-9 days. This means everyone ] in Canada SHOULD start receiving their packages the week of July 12th. ] ] We have been getting a lot of run arounds here as to where our packages ] actually were. ] ] ] DBase Online ] ------------ ] We have converted the dBase of the UltraSound reg. cards to an ASCII ] format and have posted it as GUSDBAS.ZIP. This dBase contains a list ] of all names of users who were mailed the upgrades. It only contains ] FIRST/LAST NAME, STAGE/PROV, and the last few digits of phone numbers. ] This should give you enough information to figure out if your package ] was shipped. ] ] ] GUS0034 ] ------- ] As many of you have been so kind to point out, , there were a ] few minor problems with the V2.06 software. Namely: ] ] - The Power Chords tutor and demo icons were reversed in Windows ] - DEFAULT.CFG was calling a patch called TREMSTR.PAT which didn't exist ] - WConvert V1.01 was causing General Proctection Faults in Windows ] ] I have patched these problems and there is now a V2.06a. I know I am ] going to get people saying "well, I want the new version", so instead ] of having you download another 8Mb's I have created a file called ] GUS0034.ZIP which contains the above mentioned changed files. He ] has been doing mail for me every Wed. for the last 3 weeks. But I'm ] sure he'll be a pro by the time I come back. There should be some great 3D demos comming out of ] this show. ] ] ] AIL/DIGPAK ] ---------- ] Here is some news about our AIL/DIGPAK drivers. I have been informed ] that Trilobyte is cutting some new 7th Guest CDROM disks, which are ] suppose to have UltraSound drivers on them. There is an update to ] RULES OF ENGAGEMENT II which fix some bugs and ADD UltraSound ] support (ROE2UP.ZIP). DOS programs written to use the GUS will work under OS/2. You do need to set the GUS to use an 8 bit DMA channel - DMA 1 works fine for me. SBOS will *not* work, and none of the multimedia stuff will work. > could only use the card if I run off of a bootdisk or don't boot OS/2. > But, they did say if the card emulates the Soundblaster, then the SB > drivers might work. I don't know if this would work. The GUS is not hardware compatible with the Soundblaster, so the OS/2 Soundblaster drivers will not work. > I just got OS/2 and am reluctant to install it. Those of you running OS/2 > and GUS, I'd appreciate your input about how you guys manage. I would say install OS/2, but keep a copy of DOS and use OS/2's Dual Boot or Boot Manager to select which operating system boots. Use OS/2 for everything that will run under it, and boot DOS when you want to run a game that needs SBOS. My personal opinion is that if I had to choose between OS/2 and and GUS I'd keep OS/2 and sell the GUS. Fortunatly I don't have to choose, I have been able to get by with both so far. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jul 93 14:58:33 -0400 From: "Momentary language, sexual situations" Subject: Re: GUS drivers for OS/2 Message-ID: <9307091858.AA07335@magick.tay2.dec.com> > Another thing... I don't know if this would work. For one, the GUS is in no way compatible with the SoundBlaster so you can forget about that. For two, I've been using the AIL drivers with DOS games (in a Full Screen DOS session) for a while now under OS/2 2.1GA. It works fine since the standard DOS box under OS/2 has around 620K free so the 56K whack from ULTRAMID still leaves enough for 7th Guest and Ultima Underworld (the only 2 AIL driver games I have). I also got WCHART to (mostly) work. What the rep probably meant was that it wouldn't work in a windowed DOS session. I have no idea since I never tried it... > > From: Brian Go > > I want OS/2 2.1 drivers. I have spent many unsuccessful hours trying to > > make my GUS work in native OS/2. The GUS OS/2 drivers would be greatly appreciated by us loyal > GUS owners. We've asked nicely for OS/2 drivers, both MMPM/2 and Windows drivers that don't require a .386 driver for a while now. It hasn't worked. I gotta agree with Brian here. My patience has expired and I will not be recommending an UltraSound to anyone until Gravis has OS/2 drivers. #define Flame TRUE Yes, I understand about business priorities and yes, getting Windows drivers out first makes business sense and yes, AIL drivers also makes business sense, but it's time. Either free up the resources, or get more resources but just DO IT! #define Flame FALSE DDA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jul 93 21:01:12 From: matthew.arbeid@gravis.com Subject: HELLO & QWK Message-ID: <9307092101.A0196wk@gravis.com> Ah the network... My desk is next to John's and it's amazing how many growls and other type noises come from his desk. I hope IUm up to it. I just picked up a gus a week ago, and it sounds terrific! I plugged it in, played with the stuff that came with it, and tried a couple of mod players. When I first installed the gus, I used the defaults, and most of the players worked. My favorite mp219b played mods perfectly, but didn't display. The picture would flash on the display just before the menu returned if I aborted a mod while it was playing. Now ,however, it doesn't work anymore :( it plays too slowly. Anyone know whats happening? I bet if I can figure this one out, I can figure out why Xwing locks up in Soundblaster mode, but works in adlib mode. I've got the gus at defaults. Its installed in a MIcronics 486/33 Eisa with Generic ET4000AX SVGA Card Future Domain TMC-1680 Scsi Controller at Default Settings Western Digital Elite 8003 Ethernet Card at IRQ2 i/o 280 Qemm386 6.0 is loaded and I'm runnning dos5 Wait, the Future domain is at IRQ 10. I've tried switching IRQ's and I/O's on the WD, the FD and the GUS with no success. The machine locks up (pushing the reset button works, but not the 3finger salute) right after reading from disc. One other question; Can someone tell me exactly how the various I/O addresses relate to the base address? THe table was kind of confusing. THanks in advance. Maybe one or two out there have some problems with this game... Well, when i tried to load flashback with Soundblaster(from the setup) it really got shitty music and no digital sound... So i tried some other SBOS options, but they still didn't work properly. After some hours i thought, let's try everything in adlib, even the digitized sound, and what the heck.......... it worked, this was the first game that really worked without trashy music or digitized sounds, it just was terrific.. Well, I just wanted to let you know this, and help some other people who maybe had the same problems.... So what's the moral...... when the SB digitized sounds doesn't work, try the adlib digitized sounds (if availible of course)...
