So, here's a little review: I must say i have had a bias for cakewalk for quite some time, and Cakewalk 2.0 proves without any doubt that I was right to choose this. I have used Cubase which seemed ok, but crashed so often i couldn't stand it. It also didn't do patch caching and was a pain in the ass generally speaking. I also used winjammer and midisoft recording session but these are more toys than real tools (however they go for quite a lot less $$). Cakewalk Pro win 1 was full of promises, but the timing was off for .wav and i got a bit of hang notes. However, Windows Cakewalk Pro 2.0 adress all the problems i had found in version 1. Including that patch caching was not supported. To put it in one word: "Magnifique!". The package is well done, does patch caching, the interface is less cluttered, it feels very robust and has incredible timing. Even the Afterdark problem i had while playing (hang notes etc...) doesn't happen anymore! What else... oh yeah, you can print staffs too! (version 1 didn't allow for this). I have only played with it for 2 or 3 hours up to now, so i cant really give you all the plus or minus points yet, but will do in a short period. I got only 1 strange behavior, but it is a normal one that happens with every patch caching apps: it reports that there is not enough memory on the GUS to play the file, but it is simply because a program change happens on channel 10. To correct, simply change the patch name to -none-. In any case it will play correctly. Last thing: i was extremely impressed by the speed even if i run a 386-33. Wow! this program is fast and accurate! Well, that's it for now... more details later. I'll try running Powerchords and Cakewalk simultaneously to see if it can be done. If not, i'll hope that Powerchords Pro will do it, cause the combination of these two programs make the best midi package for IBM. I dont miss OS/2 as much i must say... Message-ID: <199309020108.SAA11019@power.Stanford.EDU> I was just wondering if anyone had a PAS-16 coexisting with a GUS in their systems? I know this is complete and utter heresy, but I just noticed on the net that someone said they could buy a thing called a PAS-16 Basic for $125 new (apparently it doesn't have the SCSI port and doesn't have any built in amplification - both of which suit me perfectly). Some dangerous thoughts: a PAS-16 would provide 16-bit recording capabilities, an FM section for games or extra voices in music, and, best of all, it's available RIGHT NOW! I have been religously waiting for the GUS daughtercard but I'm beginning to wonder. It would help if Gravis could tell us when the daughtercard is being released, how much it's going to cost and what's so good about it. The only discussions going over that list of late have been: 1] "Are the OS/2 drivers out yet?" 2] "OS/2 vs. DOS vs. Windows NT vs. (ad nauseum)" 3] "Unsubscribe me" Topic #1 can be well covered on the GUS Digest, topic #2 has no place on any of the GUS lists (that's an order from the moderator, folks... namely *me*), and topic #3 is because people haven't been paying attention on where to send requests. Although these all sounded great, it is still primitive GUS support. These games and demos all used 4 channel digital sound (basicly played .MODs) in stereo. We all know that the ultrasound is capable of at least 16 in stereo! When a game or a demo finally uses this, then we will have true, full, stereo Gus support. It has been done with Ultratracker. Now they need to put it in a game. ...I'm still waiting. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 93 00:50:00 -0700 From: Thomas Wong Subject: New files validated message forwarded.... The filename is UMID102.ZIP and has been sent to all the Gravis nodes in the GRV_UPD area. You should also be able to find it on the FTP sites I would imagine within the hour . Here is a list of what has changed since V1.0. 4.1.0 Revision History ================ V1.02 - (09/01/93) All notes off midi message fixed V1.01 - (08/31/93) This UltraMID offers much faster patch loading than the previous version, and is about 3K smaller. It also can load almost twice as many patches as it used to in the same amount of PC memory. (You are still bound by the size of your UltraSound card however.) This release also fixes several small bugs. 1) DMA bug while loading patches. 2) ULTRAMID.INI problems. 3) Noises during patch loading. New Features: 1) Automatically removes SBOS. 2) Can split up its code and data so that if you have fragmented upper memory or not enough upper memory, UltraMID can still load a portion of itself high. Have fun with it. There are some nice new features. Take a peek at the README to find out what they are. John --- ~ QMPro 1.50 05-8925 ~ Dogs come when you call.
