Message-ID: <199309030059.RAA25683@power.Stanford.EDU> Hi everyone. Sort of on the topic of PAS-16's / Gus daughtercards, etc... The GUS daughtercard apparently is meant to have some sort of hardware based compression/decompression. Now I did so well with my questions about 48khz sampling a while ago that I thought that some of the technical types could help me out and explain what this means to idiots like me? I presume this is not compression/expansion like in the music effects boxes (amplitude modulation so as to flatten out the amplitude of the incoming signal/expand the amplitude of the outgoing signal). So is it compression in the sense of the lossless compression algorithms (like the one used in Pkzip, etc.) or is it some sort of lossy compression used specifically for audio data (like in the new CDC's and recordable CD's) - a kind of jpeg for audio? Or is it something else entirely? I think the SB16 also has some sort of features like this. Anyone heard anything about this? And if so, do all these cards use the same compression format (so that recording can be moved across platforms?). And if it's so great, why don't CD players use it? And what does PCM mean (Pulse Code Modulation??)? How is a PCM sample different from a non-PCM sample? And why do I ask so many questions? Chris. P.S. How many IRQs are unused on a 486 machine with standard cheapy IDE controller card with one serial port enabled? Just wondering how many I've got left. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1993 18:16:13 -0600 (CDT) From: ddebry@grue.dsd.ES.COM (Dave DeBry) Subject: Decision on GUS-OS/2 list... Also, there should be no options on SBOS. When I used options...it crashed. Volume settings are OK. You can use the Syndicate patch 'GUS-SYND.EXE' instead of modifying SYND.BAT. I know the Syndicate manual days that it will work with EMM386.EXE, but I had solid hard crashes on my HP VECTRA 486/33MI when I tried to use it in any configuration. After the pain..... GUSDLY01.ZIP contains GUSDELAY.EXE v0.1 and DUSDELAY.TXT. GUSDELAY.EXE is a program written by David MacMahon (me) that enables your GUS to record data and playback those same data after a delay. The delay can be so short that you can't notice it, or it can be as long as the GUS' memory/sample rate will accommodate. It demonstrates (quite well) that simultaneous recording and playback is both possible and well within the realm of the GUS and the low level SDK.
