Ultrasound Daily Digest Mon, 13 Sep 93 0:45 MDT Volume 6: Issue 12 Today's Topics: 808Drums 727Drums and the like Hex Appeal New feature for mods?? Seal Team seems to support GUS Ultrasound Daily Digest V6 #11 (2 msgs) Volume control for Midi files Standard Info: - Meta-info about the GUS can be found at the end of the Digest. - Before you ask a question, please READ THE FAQ. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 12 Sep 93 14:20:11 -0700 From: winston@Cadence.COM (Winston S Worrell) Subject: 808Drums 727Drums and the like Message-ID: <9309122120.AA29137@cds653> Ok, I downloaded the 808/727 drum patches (thankyou Francios(?)), but the big question I have now is -- How do I use them in prorgams like midisoft recording studio. what I have tried is this: 1: copeid the files into the ultrasound midi dir. 2: loaded up the patch manager. 3: Stuck -- no names appear. Do I have to edit the ultrasnd .ini or something. Before people say - read the README I did and it says nothing on how to get the new patches into the GUS. ps I am looking to do a lot of my work in windows not DOS, but if that is the only solution, lay it on me. Thanks, Winston. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 93 1:18:59 PDT From: mikebat@netcom.com (Mike Batchelor) Subject: Hex Appeal Message-ID: <9309120818.AA23901@netcom2.netcom.com> Not the Ultrasound Server once wrote... $ $ $ Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1993 20:29:24 +0200 $ From: chief@lysator.liu.se $ Subject: Cascada's Hex Appeal / Memory Trouble $ $ Has anyone managed to get Cascada's "Hex Appeal" demo to work? It requires $ 607k base mem and 700k XMS - and you *can't* use any memory managers (QEMM, $ EMM386..). I just can't get that much memory free without using a mem-manager. $ I mean, DOS is damn necessary (18k) and I guess COMMAND.COM would be useful $ (another 4k), ULTRINIT.SYS to install the GUS (1k) and we're already at $ 640 - 23 = 617k. Now I do have Doublespace (44k), (ie. I get 573k mem free), $ but I can't disable it to run on the non-compressed drive! It's there whatever $ I do to my autoexec's and config's. So I guess the question is, does anybody $ know how to disable doublespace, just to be able to use the computer without $ those 44k in base memory? $ $ Thanks, $ Erik There is but one way to get rid of dblspace. Use the command "format c:". No, I am not kidding. Welcome to DOS 6.0. However, if you really do have some uncompressed space on your drive, I suppose you may be able to temporarily "lose" dblspace.bin, which DOS 6 will load automatically if it is present. Go the the uncompressed drive (H:, if you accepted the defaults), and do "dir /ah". You should see, among other things, a hidden file called dblspace.bin. UnHide/UnReadOnly it, then rename it to something else. Now reboot. You may be dblspace free at this point, but I am not positive. For all the effort required to get it to run (I had to ditch a disk compressor, too, Stacker in my case), it SUCKS. One Big Yawn, nothing new: hum drum mod music, wiggly cubes, 3D starfields. Watch CD2 instead, it's got all the same stuff, but better. -- Mike Batchelor | mikebat@netcom.com | This space for rent mikebat@qdeck.com | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 93 15:52:54 +0300 From: tjakobs@mswe.dnet.ms.philips.nl (THEO_JAKOBS TEL.62667) Subject: New feature for mods?? Message-ID: <9309121252.AA10769@muxgw1.ms.philips.nl> Hi.... I was wondering, isn't it possible to use a new effect in the mods... This new effect should be stereo, why not use a effect like volume, but then for stereo, should be great... In GUSMOD you can set the stereo by using the cursors, but why not letting it done by the composers.... Then it really got a new dimension... It was just a thought.... So if some of the demo-maker, music-driver makers aren't going to use it, though luck, but it would be one hell of a new feature. Andre Jakobs MicroBrain Technologies Inc. On the side of it, it specifically said it had support for the Ultrasound. I'm not really interested in this game, but I would call this good news. BTW, I remember Phat or someone saying that the new SimCity Classic package included GUS support, as well as SimFarm. Are you sure? They didn't say so on the box. On a totally unrelated note, can anyone say what would be the most appropriate way to send my registration money for mega-em to Oz? Should I go to the trouble of an international money order? Will a personal check suffice? Jayeson, if you're reading the digest, could you let us know how you'd _prefer_ to get the money? GREAT program, BTW. In terms of value-for-money, certainly some of the best $25 I'll spend... Just rename the dblspace.bin file on your uncompressed drive.. it is hidden and systemed.. and read only. :> just attrib it so it is a plain file and rename it to something else.. then when you want the compressed drive just rename th file back and +s +h +r it.. (but hex appeal really isnt worth the effort.. it could be.. but ... run it and you will see...) This is very funny! You ask this question in a GUS ie. wavetable card list, and expect an unbiased answer? Anyway it's not an opinion, it's a fact wavetable _duplicates_ a sound, FM emulates it, what do you reckon would be best ;-) Not only that but you can emulate many other music devices with wavetable synthesis, eg GUS can emulate _any_ MIDI synth, eg. Roland SCC1 or MT32 and sound as good depending on how you sampled them, and it can emulate FM synths eg. SoundBlaster, try that with FM synthesis :-) Sorry if this comes over heavy, but the GUS is so versatile I can't understand why anyone would consider putting up with SB's shitty FM music. Some are so weak that they are hard to hear; while others hurt the ears. If you setup for weak ones and then hit a loud one you can damage small speakers. Is there a way to correct the volume level for future playings. I tied to use Midisoft program e received with our OS disks but this does not work well.
