Dave Britton fishead@cwis.unomaha.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Sep 93 09:39 EDT From: "Matthew E. Bernold" Subject: Proposed changes in the Ultrasound FAQ. Message-ID: <9309181338.AA29028@orca.es.com> Ok people, here's the scoop. I'm sure that any of you that frequently scan the FAQ as it is posted have noticed that there haven't been any major changes in the FAQ for a while, even though there has been many major changes in the GUS picture during that same time. Well, here's everyone's chance to make a difference. I'm looking into completely redoing the FAQ and changing the format to make it easier for everyone to digest.... First of all, here's the proposed format: Part 1:GUS general knowledge This part will include all board specs, hardware incompatibilities, how-to-build MIDI adapters, how do I get this to work? Part 2:GUS compatibility This part will include updated (hopefully) lists of GUS software that you just can't live without. There will be lists of .MOD players, MIDI jukeboxes, Miles Driver games, and GUS native support programs. This part will also include articles on how to get the GUS and the SB to co-exist in your machine, how to get the best sound out of the GUS with different games, how to get the Miles drivers working, and so on. Part 3:GUS what's new. This part will list the changes that have been made since the last FAQ posting. It will either have references to the original FAQ, or a copy of the actual changed material, I haven't decided which would be best. This should help out all of you who like to keep up on things, but don't want to spend the time reading the whole damn FAQ every two weeks. :-) Well, that's MY idea on how to make the FAQ better and easier to read. I should be getting some new information from Gravis to replace the outdated lists we have in there now, and new information is all around us. Here's where I beg for help.... :-) Actually, last time I asked for authors to tell me about GUS software, now I'm asking EVERYONE to tell me about their favorite GUS software. Tell me how you get it to work (Miles, SBOS, MegaEM, Windows, or Native support) who the author is, if it is Shareware or Freeware, and where it can be found. Please do NOT reply to this article in order to send this info, as my mailbox here is crowded enough right now. Please answer to the following address with a Subject starting with [GUS FAQ]. meb117@curtiss.cac.psu.edu Also, if anyone is interested in helping me to maintain SPECIFIC SECTIONS of the new FAQ, please drop me a line. There will probably be a need for someone to maintain the Miles Driver list, and maybe some other sections as well. Please post if you have any format suggestions. The new format I proposed above is FAR from the final word on the subject. Matthew E. Message-ID: <9309181111.AA22303@lindblat.cc.monash.edu.au> Greetings, I am having trouble installing the 707 and 808 drums patch, could someone please tell me which instruments shall I repalce them with and in which files ? And talking about installing new patches, can someone please tell me if I can install all the new pactches into the default.cfg, ultramid.ini and ultrasnd.ini files ? I read that 'ultramid' needs to leave a certain amount of memory in GUS to do the digital stuff, and since these patches takes up more space, I am wondering if it is allright to install all of patches into the ultramid.ini ? And since 'megaem' is using the 'ultrasnd.ini'is it allright for me to install the new patches into the file ? And one last question :-), why can't I replace the #21 instrument - 'accordn.pat' with the new 'accordeon.pat' in the ultrasnd.ini file ? If I do that, I will get an error message - 'Invalid Patch Version' whenever I start up Windows. OTOH, I have no problem at all repalcing the #127 instrument - 'ringwhsl.pat' with the 'pistol1.pat'(from GUN.ZIP), Windows has no complains about that. Please help if you can, I am sure that there are others who are interested too. Many thanks in advance.
