Well I just picked up my copy of computer game world this Friday and they did not like the GUS very much. Here is the reprint from CGW Oct 1993 #111 "We tried two versions of the Gravis Ultrasound (GUS) card. The first one had old software and 256K of RAM (into which one must load MIDI patches). It worked great under Windows, but we found it to be less desirable under DOS. We also tested a new version of the card with a 1MB RAM upgrade and new software drivers. For games that support the card, we found the wave table synthesis and digital audio to be quite acceptable. However , in Sound Blaster emulation, we had less luck. The card uses FM synthesis emulation to provide FM u\music in a game---a less than optimal solution, as explainded the introduction [of this article]. Due to the need for many TSRs , lack of vendor support (less than Adlib Gold at press time) and poor Sound Blaster emulation, it is hard to to anyone other than a Windows MIDI musician. Wee are not saying for a given game that the GUS won't work, it's just that for the casual gamer wanting Sound Blaster compatability, we found that it is not worth the configuration headaches. The 32-voice wave table synthesis is based on an older Ensoniq technology and sounds very good, though not as good as some of the other products surveyed." None to flattering eh?! I must say though thatonce again the reviewers were unfair in their evaluation. For instance they did not explain the difference and the advantages between RAM and ROM patches. Also they have just been bought be that evil mega corp Ziff-Davis Publishing specializing in the purveying of pablam. The reviews in CGW are usually pretty good pick up a copy and read for yourself what they said. They did not like the Sound Blaster 16 ASP very much either. Go figure?! Happy GUSing Gunnar Swanson gunnar@gibbs.oit.unc.edu end. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1993 09:23:06 EDT From: anclarke@civil.watstar.uwaterloo.ca Subject: Ail/miles drivers, DOS 6/Doublespace Message-ID: <9310041325.AA16917@sail.uwaterloo.ca> Could someone explain what ail and miles drivers are, and what games they're available for, how do they sound, where are they available, etc? Maybe the way to do it is to use the Micro$oft approach, like they did with their Flight Simulator. The engines sound fine. At least whenever there isn't any SBOS interrupt problems. I figure that they do it by using an undocumented DOS call (Sorry, I had to get that in there). Message-ID: <9310031619.AA08799@prism> :Well I just picked up my copy of computer game world this Friday and they :did not like the GUS very much. :Here is the reprint from CGW Oct 1993 #111 (reprint deleted) Personally, I agree fully with CGW. Aside from people who are just beginning their exploration of the MIDI universe, or even semi-serious 'musicians', the GUS is nothing more than an over-hyped sample playback card. Sure, you can playback 32 voices at once, but at what cost? Less sound fidelity. My major gripe with the GUS has been the apalling lack of support to do anything with it that I couldn't do with a simple SB Pro. Where's the patch creator/editor? I mean one that has a DECENT interface. Where's the midi software? Aside from Cakewalk 2.0, which just came out only a couple of months ago, what else is there? And of course, I can count, ON MY HAND, the number of games that came out since it was released, that support the GUS in native mode. Where are all these great, awesome games that will have NATIVE support? Sorry folks, but AIL, MegaEM, SBOS, all that just adds to the GUS 'kludgeware' library, and doesn't help matters any. If I ever decide to by a new soundcard, its going to be one that has HARDWARE support for the current standard, as well as some friggin effects that can be added to samples. So far, all I've been able to do is sample something off a CD, and play it back. Sure, I can assign it to a patch, AFTER wasting several minutes loading, editing, and saving the ultrasnd.ini file, and then RESTARTING windows. Sheesh! This is NO way to be going about making music. If its gonna take this long, I may as well invest in something I know has support, will work OUT OF THE BOX, and will work with the software I need. Nice try Gravis. Better luck next time. ccastge@prism.gatech.edu | Why are we here? --Neil Peart a.k.a., Guy Elden Jr. | Because we're here... ------------ Currently being 'frizzle-fried' | Why does it happen? in the CS realm... | Because it happens... The writers of this article must not have reviewed the rest of the issue. In particular, on page 24, Scorpia noted that "Arkania is the only game I've played so far that would not work with the Gravis Ultrasound card." She makes her living reviewing computer games, and must have played a fair number. For authors Weksler & McGee to state "Getting sound from the few games that will work with the GUS emulating a Sound Blaster requires a LOT of tinkering." must mean they didn't check very thoroughly with knowledgeable users of the GUS. ------------------------------ Date: (null) From: "Alexander Majarek, Sascha, SAM" Subject: Dagger of Amon Ra (Sierra) Message-ID: <6686F736DD@subz-nov.uibk.ac.at> Has anybody got any idea why the AIL/Sierra-drivers only work for the CD-version of 'Dagger of Amon Ra' (Laura Bow II) ? No need to have "infinite patches", IMO. Or maybe all we need is a sample of one stroke, and instead of pitch shifting it, we just trigger it more or less frequently depending on the RPMs. Underneath the stroke we can also have the whine of the gears, which we pitch shift. At high RPMs, we can switch to the single pitch-shifted sample for the engine. It shouldn't be THAT bad: almost all of the engine noise except intake 'honk' and/or turbo whine is directly RPM-related, so one or two decent patches should cover the whole rev range. You DO need different patches for the V8 Fords, the V10 Renaults, and the V12 etc as they have wildly different harmonics and such at a given RPM. ObGUS, doing this with MIDI is IMHO a bad idea since the accelerator pedal would be hooked directly to the pitch-bend controller :-) *********************************************************************** Lee DeRaud Will program Windows for food. I think it is in the October issue. They really rip the GUS badly and it has the worst rating of the 20 cards reviewed. They specifically concentrated on games for the review of their soundcards. The midi sound on the GUS they referred to as "adequate" whilst the SB16-Waveblaster combo they hailed as wonderful (ha! what a laugh, from my own tests, I found the GUS to sound as good as, if not better than the waveblaster). The main reasons it scored badly was: difficult to install, very little support (I wonder if they know about the AIL drivers and the Sierra drivers?), bad FM emulation etc, etc.. I think these guys need to be informed of the wonderfulness and the support of the GUS (anyone know if they have an Internet address?) They also previewed Ensoniq's new Soundscape (I think that is the name) card. It sounds pretty neat, but they hailed it as an amazing card, even though it has no soundblaster compatibility and they ripped the GUS for not having on-board FM chips, but a TSR instead (SBOS). It would error out on the 2nd disk with a CRC error. Got a new set of disks at the computer store and had the same problem on the 2nd disk. Now can anybody tell me if you just can't install the software on a stacked driv drive or do I have some other problem. BTW, I'm using Netroom 3.01 or 3.1 which I compared to Qemm 7+ and found Netroom to be better. I think it is underrated as a memory manager even though PC Week and PC Magazine recently picked it over QEMM and 386Max. Any info appreciated. I'd like to get the GUS software on a stacked drive since it takes up so much room. Another question-why does the sound sometimes stop in the Windows Midi player even though there are still more notes being notated on the screen? In other words, the songs play awhile, then the sound stops before the song is actually done. Thanks for any feedback. The problem is this, originally Gravis sent Accolade a flawed SDK |-> so the game has the flaws that you already mentioned. Now there are three solutions that I know of, one is you can run "gusdram -z" some claim that this is the best solution. Another is to play a 669 file, finally there is removing all of the memory from the card (caveat, I never did this) because supposedly this was the problem with the SDK it had trouble with memory management.
