I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS AGAIN! There is no such thing as the Ultrasound Daily Digest anymore. The Ultrasound Daily Digest has been replaced with the GUS Daily Digest (I'm trying to get these all commonly named, so bear with me). This list is for general discussions about the GUS, including (but not limited to) troubleshooting, installation, working with games and other software, etc. Here are the addresses: gus-general@dsd.es.com To post to the digest gus-general-request@dsd.es.com Subscribe, unsubscribe, files, etc. gus-general-owner@dsd.es.com Use this if the automated request line fails. I have moved the SDK list. This list is for discussion on programming the GUS. I have created a GUS Musician's digest. This list is for the discussion of writing and performing music with the GUS, as well as any software or hardware related topics. Here are the addresses: gus-music@dsd.es.com To post to the digest gus-music-request@dsd.es.com Subscribe, unsubscribe, files, etc. gus-music-owner@dsd.es.com Use this if the automated request line fails. If you were subscribed to the Ultrasound Daily Digest, you are now subscribed to the GUS Daily Digest. If you were subscribed to the SDK Digest, you still are. NO ONE has been subscribed to the Musician's Digest. You must use the music request server to do this. Also, the directory hierarchy on archive.epas has been changed to reflect these lists: % ls /pub/pc/ultrasound/digest general/ music/ sdk/ The files originally in /pub/pc/ultrasound/digest have been moved into /pub/pc/ultrasound/digest/general. The files originally in /pub/pc/ultrasound/sdk-digest have been moved into /pub/pc/ultrasound/digest/sdk. The music digests will be placed into /pub/pc/ultrasound/digest/music, in the same method they are in the other directories, including the "daily" file. This will start as soon as the Musician's Digest starts getting messages. -- Dave ddebry@ debry@ \ DeBry dsd. peruvian. | "Great googly moogly!" es. cs.utah. | com edu / ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Oct 93 12:42:02 +0100 From: Morten AAsnes Subject: 2nd reality ans gus/sb Hi ! A few people have mentioned moving this whole thing over to a USENET newsgroup. Others have said keep the digest running, AND make a newsgroup. As administrator of the list, I'd like to say why we should NOT have a GUS newsgroup: 1] After only a few days of discussion, changes were made to this set of GUS digests. If we were a USENET group, any such changes would take AT LEAST 6 weeks, if not much more, provided we were in the comp... hierarchy. 1a] If we were in the alt... hierarchy, changes would happen much faster, but FAR fewer people would be able to read the groups. 2] Most of the people who read this digest don't have access to the USENET news feed. Creating a newsgroup would be useless to them, unless the digest gatewayed the news messages. 2a] The site where I'm running these digests has a horrible newsfeed. (I don't read my news here.) If I gatewayed the digest to the feed, we'd be dropping messages like something very heavy in a large amount of gravity (yes, I am bad at metaphors... want to make something of it? :). 2b] Gatewaying the newsfeed is a waste of bandwidth. Not only does a message go out on USENET (which most of the time is a HUGE waste of bandwidth by itself), but it then gets copied into mail, sent out, archived in several places... etc., etc., ad nauseum. 2c] I don't even want to try to set up the gateway software. I'm busy enough as is, and that code is pretty ugly. 3] You SHOULD NOT create a new group in USENET for every different piece of software, hardware, every musical group and TV show, or every person that is out there. USENET is meant to be a general hierarchy. Extremely specific discussions (as I consider the GUS threads to be) should be encouraged to be kept to mailing lists, IRC, and other such limited methods. This is to conserve bandwidth, keep conversations topical, and other various and sundry important axioms to follow when you are in danger of being inundated by a giant flow of data. -- Dave ddebry@ debry@ \ DeBry dsd. peruvian. | "A jar of eyes can be a tasty treat." es. cs.utah. | com edu / ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Oct 1993 18:25:30 -0600 (CDT) From: ddebry@grue.dsd.ES.COM (Dave DeBry) Subject: FAQs for the New Users I have modified the MailServ code to automatically send the FAQ to new subscribers. One of the mbs I am considering has the UMC chipset. According to the FAQ, some motherboards with Opti and UMC chipset have a faulty 16 bit DMA controller. What is the best way to detect this faulty motherboard? I don't want to find out it doesn't work with my GUS after I have taken it home. Does anyone have any program, any suggestion? I know the chip in question would be the 82c206 but I don't know which batch is bad. I might bring along QAPlus and Checkit but I don't think these programs can detect it. The shop may have a 16 bit sound card, so the best thing would be to get the salesman to put one in the computer and get him to playback a 16bit digital sample. I hadn't listened to a PAS16 until yesterday, when I installed it for a friend. I couldn't believe how poor the sound quality was - at everything. SB EMULATION - SHIT SHIT SHIT . I played Alone In The Dark. I expected better compatiblity than the GUS, therefore more acurate sound. However, the digitised samples were tinny and rough, the adlib sound was like a C64 of 10 years ago, and the game was not any smother than on the GUS. AND THIS WAS THROUGH A GREAT STEREO SYSTEM. As comparison, the GUS digitised sounds of the floor creaking were crystal clear, and atmospheric. And the Gus adlib was great! MOD music: This was worse than SHIT. Of course we must remember that the GUS is outstanding at playing MOD music. Combining the software mixing with a FM DAC resulted in a tiny, crap sound with no bass. THE GUS RULES SUPREME. MIDI: THIS WAS THE MOST LAUGHABLE OF ALL !!!! The midi sounded exactly like a glorified ADLIB, YES ADLIB. Of course, I know they both use the same techniques but with 16bits to work with, maybe they could have done a better job. GAME COMPATABILITY: Pretty equal to the GUS. Believe it or not we couldn't get FLASHBACK to work at all on the PAS. I got this game working fine on my GUS. I'm a GUS owner who has found the GUS very compatable. SBOS works for all my games, and believe me I have a lot. The worst thing is that the PAS16 costs an enormous amount of money here in Australia. The PAS16 - not even glorified SB - sells for $399-$499 depending on how dumb the computer retailer is. Compared to the GUS which sells for a mere $269. I wouldn't pay more than $140 dollars for a PAS16 - come to think of it I wouldn't pay JACK for a PAS16. NOTICE TO ALL GUS USERS: We are all very spoilt by our GUS'. We are used to excellent quality sound from all applications, so when you hear a alternative sound Card, try not to laugh to loud. ;-) Thanks GRAVIS Steen University of NSW Australia ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Oct 1993 14:17:12 +0100 (MET) From: Geir Johannessen Subject: GUS with EISA ????
